MetLife has outlined the early stages of their journey at past DockerCons, but have now moved past the POC stage and are in the process of transforming our technology portfolio globally. We are driving change on multiple levels in many ways, and now we've created a long-term strategy outlining how we will reach our technology goals using containers. At MetLife, we realized that once a PoC is complete, incorporating an entire application portfolio can be challenging: Where do you focus for the largest benefit to the organization? A proof of concept is a great way to see if your traditional applications are worth Dockerizing. However, getting that first application into production in an enterprise can pose many challenges, both technical and organizational. In this talk, I will take you through the journey starting with high-level decisions such as what applications and components to Dockerize and methodology, then move on to more detailed decisions such as what components to put in images, configuration management, and version control. I will also cover how this impacts the development pipeline and strategies for operationalizing and scaling out the application onboarding process.

On-the-Fly Containerization of Enterprise Java & .NET Apps by Amjad Afanah
Dockerizing brownfield enterprise applications can often be a daunting task - involving changes to the application code/configuration and existing build processes. The DCHQ platform provides “on-the-fly” containerization of both Linux & Windows enterprise applications – including Java, Oracle, .NET and others. By doing so, DCHQ transforms non-cloud-native applications into completely portable applications that can take advantage of cloud scaling, storage redundancy and most importantly, deployment agility without introducing a single change to the application source control repository.
In this session, we will cover the deployment automation of an Enterprise Java application with PostgreSQL multi-host cluster set up for Master-Slave replication and automated storage management with redundant EBS volumes on AWS using DCHQ + EMC REX-Ray. We will also cover the deployment automation of an Enterprise .NET application demonstrating the application life-cycle management capabilities post-provision -- including monitoring, alerts, continuous delivery, application backups, scale in/out, in-browser terminal to access the containers, log streaming, and application updates.

Kubernetes 101
This document discusses microservices and containers, and how Kubernetes can be used for container orchestration. It begins with an overview of microservices and the benefits of breaking monolithic applications into independent microservices. It then discusses how containers can be used to package and deploy microservices, and introduces Docker as a container platform. Finally, it explains that as container usage grows, an orchestrator like Kubernetes is needed to manage multiple containers and microservices, and provides a high-level overview of Kubernetes' architecture and capabilities for scheduling, self-healing, scaling, and other management of containerized applications.
Introduction to helm
Helm is a package manager for Kubernetes that allows for easy installation, upgrade, and management of Kubernetes applications. It provides repeatability, reliability, and simplifies deploying applications across multiple Kubernetes environments. Helm originated from an internal hackathon at Deis and was jointly developed by Google and Deis. It is now maintained by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Helm consists of a client that interacts with the Tiller server running inside the Kubernetes cluster to manage application lifecycles using charts, which are packages containing Kubernetes resource definitions.
Kubernetes Helm: Why It Matters
Kubernetes Helm makes application deployment easy, standardized and reusable. Use of Kubernetes Helm leads to better developer productivity, reduced Kubernetes deployment complexity and enhanced enterprise production readiness.
Enterprises using Kubernetes Helm can speed up the adoption of cloud native applications. These applications can be sourced from open-source community provided repositories, or from an organization’s internal repository of customized application blueprints.
Developers can use Kubernetes Helm as a vehicle for packaging their applications and sharing them with the Kubernetes community. Kubernetes Helm also allows software vendors to offer their containerized applications at “the push of a button.” Through a single command or a few mouse clicks, users can install Kubernetes apps for dev-test or production environments.

Scale into Multi-Cloud with Containers

2017 was a banner year for change and disruption at Lockheed Martin. Specifically Enterprise IT, moving to cloud and taking a chance on Containerization as a Service with Docker. As innovation accelerates and customer needs rapidly evolve, Lockheed Martin must become increasingly agile. Rapidly responding to customer requirements is key, and to facilitate overall business goals, Enterprise IT needs to be agile. We are experiencing software development lifecycles moving from waterfall to agile models of development. These changes are moving downstream toward Enterprise IT operations with the evolution of DevOps.
In order to meet the demands of the customer and make significant progress on our cloud journey, we needed to look at changing how we manage infrastructure, how we change our IT culture and ultimately how we innovate at scale. That’s where the story of i2 labs begins.
This presentation will focus on the creation of i2 labs at Lockheed Martin, which inspired and enabled people and processes to invest in Docker as a company, Containerization as a technology and DevOps as a methodology. How we went from labs testing to building Agile Development Teams to preparing to enter our BETA phase of our Enterprise Containerization as a Service to deploy applications in a consistent, repeatable, and reliable manner.

Introduction to helm
Helm is a package manager for Kubernetes that allows for easy installation, upgrade, and management of Kubernetes applications. It provides repeatability, reliability, and simplifies deploying applications across multiple Kubernetes environments. Helm originated from an internal hackathon at Deis and was jointly developed by Google and Deis. It is now maintained by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Helm consists of a client that interacts with the Tiller server running inside the Kubernetes cluster to manage application lifecycles using charts, which are packages containing Kubernetes resource definitions.
Kubernetes Helm: Why It Matters
Kubernetes Helm makes application deployment easy, standardized and reusable. Use of Kubernetes Helm leads to better developer productivity, reduced Kubernetes deployment complexity and enhanced enterprise production readiness.
Enterprises using Kubernetes Helm can speed up the adoption of cloud native applications. These applications can be sourced from open-source community provided repositories, or from an organization’s internal repository of customized application blueprints.
Developers can use Kubernetes Helm as a vehicle for packaging their applications and sharing them with the Kubernetes community. Kubernetes Helm also allows software vendors to offer their containerized applications at “the push of a button.” Through a single command or a few mouse clicks, users can install Kubernetes apps for dev-test or production environments.

Scale into Multi-Cloud with Containers

These changes are moving downstream toward Enterprise IT operations with the evolution of DevOps.
In order to meet the demands of the customer and make significant progress on our cloud journey, we needed to look at changing how we manage infrastructure, how we change our IT culture and ultimately how we innovate at scale. That’s where the story of i2 labs begins.
This presentation will focus on the creation of i2 labs at Lockheed Martin, which inspired and enabled people and processes to invest in Docker as a company, Containerization as a technology and DevOps as a methodology. How we went from labs testing to building Agile Development Teams to preparing to enter our BETA phase of our Enterprise Containerization as a Service to deploy applications in a consistent, repeatable, and reliable manner.

Docker
Docker is a tool designed to make it easier to create, deploy, and run applications
by using containers. Containers allow a developer to package up
an application with all of the parts it needs, such as libraries and other dependencies,
and ship it all out as one package. By doing so, thanks to the
container, the developer can rest assured that the application will run on
any other Linux machine regardless of any customized settings that machine
might have that could differ from the machine used for writing and testing
the code.
In a way, Docker is a bit like a virtual machine. But unlike a virtual
machine, rather than creating a whole virtual operating system, Docker allows
applications to use the same Linux kernel as the system that they’re
running on and only requires applications be shipped with things not already
running on the host computer. This gives a significant performance boost
and reduces the size of the application.

Think 2018 - MicroProfile OpenAPI
This document discusses MicroProfile OpenAPI and how it provides a standard way for Java developers to work with OpenAPI v3 specifications. MicroProfile OpenAPI includes annotations, model interfaces, and APIs that generate OpenAPI definitions from Java code. It addresses issues with non-standard libraries by standardizing the process through the Eclipse MicroProfile project. The presentation also covers samples showing how operations, POJOs, OAuth configurations, and more can be defined using MicroProfile OpenAPI annotations and interfaces. Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
