This document presents a study that compares survey data on researchers' engagement with non-academic stakeholders to altmetric data on the social media attention of researchers' publications. The study finds that Facebook mentions are most common but do not necessarily reflect formal engagement. Other altmetric sources like policy documents show very little presence. The results provide a window into further mixed-methods analyses but are insufficient on their own to determine whether altmetrics capture societal engagement. More nuanced analysis is needed that accounts for disciplinary and researcher factors.
