This study aims to analyze the correlation between deviated nasal septum (DNS) and chronic rhinosinusitis. The objectives are to study the grades of DNS and clinical severity of chronic rhinosinusitis on diagnostic nasal endoscopy, and to evaluate the association between grades of DNS and clinical severity. The cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Maharashtra on patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and DNS presenting to the ENT OPD over 18 months. Patients were evaluated based on symptoms, diagnostic nasal endoscopy to assess DNS severity and correlate it with clinical severity of chronic rhinosinusitis symptoms.

4. Diagnostic Criteria for rhinosinusitis
Primary symptoms (requires at least one to
be present, but if both present it is sufficient
to make diagnosis on the basis of symptoms)
Nasal blockage/obstruction/congestion
Nasal discharge (anterior/posterior)
Additional symptoms (may also be present
and at least one is needed if only one of the
primary symptoms is present
Facial pain/pressure
Olfactory dysfunction
Hyposmia/anosmia
Duration >10 days, <3 months = acute
>3 months = chronic
Endoscopy (any of these) Nasal polyps
Mucopurulent discharge (middle meatus)
Oedema/mucosal obstruction in middle
meatus

•Place of study : Tertiary care hospital, Maharashtra
•Study design : Cross sectional Analytical study
•Period of study : 18 months
•Study population: Patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis and deviated
nasal septum reporting to ENT OPD

6. Materials and methodology
Inclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria:
Age:18-60 years Patients with history of nasal surgery,
sino-nasal neoplasm, anomalies of lateral
wall of nose, granulomatous diseases,
antro choanal polyp, allergic, vasomotor
Patients with complaint of nasal
blockage/obstruction/congestion, nasal
discharge (anterior/posterior), facial
pain/pressure, olfactory dysfunction,
hyposmia/anosmia, nasal polyps,
mucopurulent discharge (middle
meatus), oedema/mucosal obstruction in
middle meatus for >12 weeks

7. Materials and methodology
Evaluation of cases:
Selecting patients presenting with symptoms of nasal
discharge/nasal blockage for >12 weeks
Confirming cases as chronic rhinosinusitis with
diagnostic nasal endoscopy
Assessing the DNS in these selected patients
Assessment of severity of DNS in these patients
Assessment of correlation between severity of DNS and
clinical severity of symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis
