Joe Ryan runs weekly Job Seekers Ministry meetings at Holy Trinity Church to help the unemployed with career counseling. A survey of participants found that while resume help and career advice were important motives for attending, equally important was the need to escape the loneliness and depression of unemployment. The meetings provided feelings of connection, care, motivation, and understanding from others in similar situations, replacing despair with hope and healing bruised egos. As Ryan notes, the sense of community and love shown by participants is an effective antidote for the worry caused by unemployment.
