The Lincoln Blackwood was conceived as a luxury pickup truck to shake off Lincoln's perception as "old school" and "boring". However, it was delivered after the dot-com bubble burst and one month after 9/11. Priced at $53,000 with poor gas mileage and functionality, it was seen as an expensive toy for the rich during an economic downturn. Despite direct marketing efforts, production was cancelled after one year due to design flaws, poor value, and bad timing in the market.

The Lincoln Blackwood was conceived as a luxury pickup truck to shake off Lincoln's stodgy image, but it was delivered at the wrong time. [1] It was designed in the late 1990s for conspicuous wealth but came out after the dot-com bubble burst. [2] The Blackwood was over-the-top in style but lacked substance with poor gas mileage, high price, and an unusable truck bed. [3] Production was cancelled after just one year due to the vehicle's severe flaws in design, value, and poor market timing.

It explores how companies should engage fans by occupying, attracting, or involving them. The rest of the document provides examples of how one company authentically engages fans through compelling experiences and relatable content across various platforms and products.

Both films successfully illustrate the challenges teenagers experience as they develop into adults. 10 Things I Hate About You, set in 1990s Seattle, captures the music, fashion and slang of the era. It focuses on two sisters, where one shuns typical high school experiences and the other is popular, highlighting the pressures teens face.

Lido Anthony lacocca was born in 1924 to Italian immigrants. He displayed strong work ethic and leadership skills from a young age. He graduated from Lehigh University and Princeton University. He joined Ford Motor Company in 1946 where he had success in sales and marketing, introducing popular programs like the 1956 Ford and the 1964 Mustang. In 1978, he joined Chrysler Corporation to help turn it around from $160 million in losses. He secured a $1.5 billion loan from the US Congress after Chrysler was on the verge of bankruptcy. By 1983, he had paid back the loan fully seven years early, completing the turnaround. He acquired American Motors, bringing the Jeep division to Chrysler before retiring in 1993
Skyfall Production Distribution Exhibition & AudienceElle Sullivan
1) Skyfall was produced by Eon Productions and distributed by MGM and Columbia Pictures. It had a budget of $150-200 million and was aimed at a global audience.

3) The film was very successfully marketed through traditional and digital channels. An especially impactful marketing moment was James Bond participating in the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

THE MAN WHO DIDN'T KNOW HE HAD A BRAND & OTHER RETAIL STORIESBob Snyder
This document discusses how customer experience shaped several brands. William Eno's experience as an unsatisfied traffic customer led him to innovate traffic safety solutions. Abolfazl Khanjani's customers defined his flag business before he did. Noel Lee built the Monster brand through experiential retail stores but lost control of the brand when Beats focused more on customer experience. The document advocates putting customer experience at the center of branding.
The document compares two cars from the 1970s, the Golf and the Allegro, to illustrate the importance of product features. The Golf sold over 25 million units over 33 years by focusing on features customers wanted, like a hatchback. In contrast, the Allegro sold just 640,000 units in 10 years because it prioritized low costs over product features and rejected including a hatchback. The moral is that product features make a difference, and companies need to understand what features customers truly value.

Leica Cameras are in deep trouble. While once a legendary camera maker that pioneered the 35mm film format, Leica has struggled financially in recent decades. As digital photography replaced film, Leica was slow to transition and lost market share. Attempts to enter the digital market, such as the Leica S1 camera, were unsuccessful. Hiring an American CEO, Steven Lee, led to cultural clashes and Lee was eventually fired. Leica continues to work on reviving its brand through new digital cameras, but faces fierce competition from larger camera companies in a rapidly changing industry.

3. Over a decade ago, some mad scientist types
at Lincoln got to wondering:
What would happen if we created a mash-up
of a truck, a luxury sedan and an SUV?
6. “Luxury Utility Vehicle”
With Blackwood, Lincoln hoped to shake off the
perception that it was “old school”, “stuck in the 60s”
and “boring”.
There were just 3 problems...
7. Wrong vehicle
• Blackwood was a triumph of over-the-top style vs. substance.
• Conceived of in the late 1990s, when investors sought out
conspicuous displays their new-found stock market wealth.
• Delivered after the dot.com bubble burst – 1 month after 9/11.
Wrong concept
Wrong time
9. Product challenges
• Genuinely expensive: $53,000
• A shockingly eco-unfriendly 13 mpg (17 highway)
• No 4 wheel-drive
• Unusable truck bed
• “Gorgeous, in the way that Las Vegas honeymoon suites
and Elvis's jumpsuits are gorgeous”
29. What about the regular edition Blackwood?
We attracted lots of prospects despite:
High price
Lack of basic features
Garish design
The press laughing at us
What more could possible happen?
30. January 3, 2001
Blackwood Reports
Production Delay
Claycomo, MO Originally expected to be on sale by
the fall of 2000, then delayed until the first quarter of
2001, it now appears Blackwood customers may not
take delivery until the second quarter of 2001.
37. Could direct marketing save a vehicle
so severely flawed in design, value,
functionality, and timing as Blackwood?
No. Production was cancelled
after just one year.
38. What did we accomplish?
• Attracted 59,300 prospects
• Sold 3,356 vehicles at dealerships
– Brought in $17,786,000 in revenue
• Sold 50 Neiman-Marcus units in 8 hours
– $2.9 million in sales from 1 product running 1 time in 1 catalog!
• Helped ensure the Lincoln brand will never again be
perceived of as “boring”
Many thanks to Steve Luftman, Blackwood Art Director,
and the rest of the Y&R team
