Redefining Societal Norms In Alison Bechdel s Fun Home
Sexuality and Redefining Societal Norms Fun Home by Alison Bechdel is a tragicomic that
portrays characters with differing styles of dealing with their own sexuality. Everything about the
novel, from the manner in which it is told, to the character development of Alison and her father
Bruce, is a unique way of discovering one s self and the effect the outside world has on this
discovery. Both Alison and her father struggle with coming into their own identities. A further
complication to their own self discoveries are the time period in American society that they live in.
Homosexualitywas a taboo and not currently shared by people in these circles. There is also the
two different methods of discovering one s sexuality. A father who does everything in his power
to appear perfect to the public eye. He hides his inner self to the world because it does not fit in
with societal norms. The reader is also presented with a daughter who rejects every normal feminine
stereotype that is pushed on her by her father. There is a constant back and forth between Alison
and her father throughout the entire novel, proving that discovering... Show more content on

All her life, where her father failed to be who he was, Alison proved she would be her true self
and question her father on any threats he made to her own self discover. It made her become the
person she believed she truly was on the inside. Without these challenges with her father s denials,
Alison may not have been able to embrace her sexuality in the manner she consistently displayed
in the novel. Fun Home is a novel that must be revered in society for its ability to attack society s
normative societal structure, especially in an era when society was not willing to listen to people
with different behaviors. It s a novel about the struggle to discover one s sexuality and the battle

Christopher Bogart, Ceo Of Burford Capital
Christopher Bogart, CEO of Burford Capital, a leading capital provider to the global legal
industry, sat in his illustrious office on Madison Avenue in New York City. Prior to joining
Burford Capital, Christopher spent more than 20 years working at Time Warner, including as the
Executive Vice President General Counsel. On one side of his desk sat a report on the spectacular
rates of return of Burford Capital s investments. On the other, sat a report describing the growth of
contingency fee litigation. Christopher knew Burford Capital had a track record of stellar returns,
but he worried perhaps that was about to change. Christopher knew that Fortune 500 companies

In 2011, three of the largest firms involved in commercial litigation lending were Burford Capital,
Bentham IMF, and Juridica Investments. All three were publicly traded on foreign exchanges, and
each invested heavily in the United States civil justice system. How the Litigation Finance Market
Worked
Non recourse loans were extended most often to plaintiffs in personal injury cases. These loans
were used to pay the costs of litigation, but, in some cases, were also used to cover the plaintiff s
living expenses during the pendency of the lawsuit. Non recourse financing of commercial claims
came into existence in the 2000s and became increasingly common. The providers of this financing
typically undertook an analysis of the merits of the contemplated claim that was more rigorous than
the analysis employed in personal injury cases. If the claim appeared meritorious, the financing
company advanced amounts to cover attorney s fees and the other costs of the litigation. These
advances typically were made to the claimant or its outside litigation counsel, in return for a
percentage of any eventual recovery. The recent trend in the use of non recourse litigation financing
attracted increasing attention, both within and outside the legal profession, in part because the
arrangements were largely unregulated, and required the payment of relatively large financing fees.
Another key reason it attracted attention was its

Analyzing The Poem Slam Poetry
This poem contains three stanzas with seven lines per each, and the rhyme scheme is A, B, A, B,
C, D, C. In this poem I attempted to mimic Maya in that I spoke of a topic that was deeply
important to me, told a story, and expressed my opinions. I noticed that Maya s writing as well as
other Post Modern/Contemporary poets write about issues they deem important, or feelings,
moreover, how to put feelings into words. Slam Poetryis often an extreme example of this, and has
come into popularity in the Post Modern and Contemporary Era.
Furthermore, as far as style goes Maya does write free verse relatively often, but other times there
is a semi distinct or distinct rhyme scheme. She doesn t follow the same pattern in every poem she
writes, or

Music And Its Influence On Music
Introduction:
Music is a very telling form of expression. Whether it is the lyrics themselves, the tone in which
they re said or the rhythm of the music, there are many methods in which music expresses the artist
s opinion to his audience. The introduction of new methods of expression in music by tinkering
with old methods are how new musical ideas are discovered. In the past, Miles Davis explorations
into jazz fusion and modal jazz music pushed the envelope. Now, Kanye West s explorations
through samples, orchestration and rhythms shape the direction of music.
For both Miles Davis and Kanye West, the fields of music (Jazz and Hip Hop) in which they have
had most of their influence are considered to be predominantly dominated with ... Show more

It accomplishes this through providing first hand quotes from Miles himself as well as quotes from
other jazz musicians around Miles, thus also establishing its creditbility.
Perhaps the most useful source of evidence comes from the quote French jazz pianist RenГ©
Urtreger: Miles was proud and touched by the fact that in France, jazz was considered to be very
important music . For in this quote we get a context about just how important jazz is to Parisian
culture. This can speak to our claim that Miles, along with other black music artists, fit into the role
of entertainment to the French. It is only in contexts where the French/ whites decide where black
can gain economic success and recognition. In this instance, it was in the case of Jazz where the
French deemed important and where Miles crossed over into perfectly.
This source also provided some background as to the decreased popularity of Jazz music in
American culture during the same time period with historical information. Yet despite all the
economic success and fame obtained in Paris, Miles s opinion on Paris seemed to be a negative
one as evident in his soundtrack for the film noir Ascenseur pour l Echafaud (Lift to the Scaffold),
evidence introduced in the article but will be discussed later in another source.

The Domestication of the Last Frontier Essay
The Domestication of the Last Frontier
In 1865 the frontier line generally followed the western limits of the states bordering the
Mississippi River, bulging outward to include the eastern sections of Kansas and Nebraska.
Beyond this thin edge of pioneer farms, lay the prairie and sagebrush lands that stretched to the
foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Then, for nearly 1,600 kilometers, loomed the huge bulk of
mountain ranges, many rich in silver, gold and other metals. On the far side, plains and deserts
were part of this region; here laid the Last Frontier the Great Plains . For a long time, the region had
been called the Great American Dessert, a barrier to cross on the way to the Pacific, unfit for
human habitation and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By 1890 the frontier had disappeared.
Settlement was spurred by the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted free farms of 64 hectares
to citizens who would occupy and improve the land. Under the homestead Act of 1862 a farmer
could either realize the old dream of free land and simply by staking out a claim and living on it
for years, or by buying the land at $1.25 an acre after six months. (Tindall 878) Unfortunately for
the would be farmers, the land itself was suited more for cattle ranching than farming, and by 1880
nearly 22,400,000 hectares of free land was in the hands of cattlemen or the railroads.
In 1862 Congress also voted a charter to the Union Pacific Railroad, which pushed westward
from Council Bluffs, Iowa, using mostly the labor of ex soldiers and Irish immigrants. At the
same time, the Central Pacific Railroad began to build eastward from Sacramento, California,
relying heavily on Chinese immigrant labor. The whole country was stirred as the two lines
steadily approached each other, finally meeting on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Point in Utah.
The months of laborious travel hitherto separating the two oceans was now cut to about six days.
The continental rail network grew steadily, and by 1884, four great lines linked the central
Mississippi Valley area with the Pacific.
The first great rush of population to the Far West was drawn to the mountainous regions, where
gold was found in California in 1848, in Colorado

Essay on Lithium
Almost everyone has a favorite song, a song that takes them back or sends them forward to a
place and time that is not the present. What makes us pick out our favorites? What kind of affect
does a song have that it requires us to constantly hum it or sing it at the top of our lungs? While I
cannot speak for others without some kind of group consultation, I can explain the things that make
me feel so intensely about this song, Lithium, preformed by a 1990s grunge rock band, Nirvana,
and sung by Kurt Cobain.
The introduction to this song makes me think of a nursery rhyme. It takes me back to being a
young child singing Ring Around the Rosie and laughing and playing with others without a care in
the world. Though this feeling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It only takes so much of this before one will encompass within ones own head. Of course these
new friends do not hurt you and you are the happiest you have ever been.
The next line, I m so ugly, but that s okay, cause so are you/ Broke our mirrors (nirvana music),
continues to explain an aggravated state of the songwriter. Also, a glimmer of hope appears in
this line. It reminds us that we are only as ugly as we think we are. By breaking the mirrors, a
freedom from society is stated. There is no fear of what others think. A reaction to this is in some
way straying from the norm. We have holes in our noses and tattoos and dress differently than the
rest. We all need to break our mirrors and be proud of who we are.
The following line, Sunday morning is everyday for all I care/ And I m not scared (nirvana
music), talks about somebody who either does not believe in God or believe in going to church on
Sundays, or is not afraid to worship in another manner other than the usual. Sunday is just another
day of the week. This person is not afraid of any repercussions that might be the effect of this
activity. This line is also about having freedoms.
Light my candles/ In a daze/ Cause I ve found god/ Hey, Hey, Hey (nirvana music) is a
continuation of the preceding line. It is difficult to determine what is meant here. Maybe it is
because the songwriter is so surprised to discover God. I see it like this. The

Shepherds Manor
What shepherds produced supported the manor with its economy. Animals had a big part in the
manor, and produced a lot of goods thanks to the shepherds. Pigs were the most numerous of
livestock and they could mainly support themselves by foraging in the woods. Cows were kept
to breed oxen for the plow team. Sheep and goats were used for milk and cheese and sheep was
also used for wool (Gies and J Gies 22). Landowners had trading links with traders abroad, but
peasants dealt with travelling merchants. Large numbers of sheep were bred and taken care of to
produce a lot of wool and enough wool was made for families and abroad, and families in little
cottages turned it from rough wool to cloth (Johnson). A lot of cheese was produced from female...

Shepherd s produced many different goods for feudalism. Livestock grazed in tofts, this livestock
being cows, oxen, pigs, and chickens. Villagers owned sheep, but they were not kept in tofts. In the
summer and fall, they went to the marsh to graze and in the winter, they went to pens in the manor
fold so the lord could profit from the manure (it was very valuable because it was used as
fertilizer) (Gies and J Gies 35). Wool became a backbone to medieval economy, and even lords,
abbots and bishops started to count wealth in terms of sheep (Johnson). Wool became taxed and
this helped the King fund his military endeavors (Johnson). These goods helped support the
different ranks of feudalism. The goods shepherds provided helped out the lord and the king
especially. Wool was a very popular product that was produced by shepherds, and was bought
and sold constantly. The king got all tax on this, so he got a lot of money. This helped him to
fund the military, which supported him for protection, but also the lords and peasants. The lords
benefited from the manure produced from the sheep shepherds raised. They got money from this
and could have used it for many reasons, personally or for the people of feudalism. Feudalism and
manorialism gave people ranks, economy, and military that helped people live their lives in the
dark times of medieval ages. The shepherds

Fashion Trends Shaped by Economic Issues Essay
The 1920 s, also called the roaring 20 s, was a time of change. During this time period the fashion
for both men and women was changing immensely. The aftermath of WWI caused America to enter
a vigorous era. As a result of the role of women during the war, many customs and morals were
changing. The Stock Market started booming, many new dances and music came about, and
women got the right to vote and enter the workforce. There was an uprise in almost every activity,
and fashion was definitely one (Tirocchi, Anna and Laura). Although fashion varied throughout the
decade, one could notice a drastic changefrom the prior fashion. There were many factors, like said
above, that played into the changes of the 1920 s. As a result of World... Show more content on

It wasn t until the 1930s that ready to wear clothes became available with multiple fabrics.
Fabrics started to become more elaborate. They could now be embroidered or have prints and
designs. Many women began to wear scarves with fringed edges. This was when beaded designs,
bright colors and fringes became popular on dresses too (Hossell). Like clothing, the 1920 s also
took a great tole on women s accessorization, the use of cosmetics, and tanning. Some popular
accessories girls wore were long strand of pearls, bangles, dangling earrings and furs. The
strands of pearls were normally looped a few time around the neck. Long straight fur coats
without curves became very popular (Women s Fashion Accessories). Women began getting their
eyebrows thinned to emphasize a younger face. They started wearing make up around the eyes to
make them look larger. Lipstick became popular to accent the upper lip and depth of the lower lip.
Because women wanted to change their look with makeup, the makeup market started booming
during this decade. Although you could buy makeup, few women still made their own makeup.
They used soot for eyeshadow and petroleum jelly mixed with soot for mascara. Women began to
wear heels, the most popular being the ankle strap cuban heeled shoe. They wore brimmed hats,
such as a cloche hat to finish their look. Later in decade, more headbands with feather were being
worn instead of brimmed hats. This look coming from the

Ethical Complications of Genetic Engineering and Eugenics...
Genetic engineering is currently the fastest growing and perhaps most controversial field of
science. Genetic engineering is decoding and manipulating DNA to use for scientific and medical
purposes. The discovery that human cells can be grown in a petri dish has opened up breathtaking
possibilities for curing disease and a morass of ethical complications (Allen 9).
Genetic engineering has already started to be most helpful in the field of medicine. The map of the
human genome offers many cures and potentially successful medical procedures. By creating
artificial chromosomes, scientists may be able to replace diseased inherited traits with functional
ones. Determining the genetic make up of viruses such as the HIV virus that ... Show more content

Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species in 1859. In this book, he explained his theory of
natural selection which is that members of species with the most desired ( best fit ) traits will
survive and reproduce. Eugenicists took Darwin s ideas of natural selection and applied them to
society and the human race. Some American and German scientists agreed the human race could be
cleansed by means of artificial selection and sterilization (Proctor 10 15).
In Germany, eugenics became focused on racial hygiene and was transformed into genocide. In
the beginning, Nazis targeted people with handicaps or mental illnesses, those who they felt had
real, medical justifications to be killed. In Grafeneck, Germany in 1940 approximately 10,000
mentally handicapped people or people with mental diseases were killed with toxic gas in the
course of the Nazi euthanasia program (Wunder 1). After this they moved on to other groups that
they believed tainted their Aryan race. The Nazis fabricated scientific reasons for killing gypsies,
Jews, blacks, and Jehovah s witnesses along with the handicapped, saying that their brains were
smaller and that they were inferior.

How A Polymer Is Important Class Of Reinforcement
1.INTRODUCTION
A combination of two or more materials (reinforcement, resin, filler, etc),differing in form or
composition on a macro scale . They usually consist of high performance fibres as reinforcing
phases and polymers or metals as matrices.
Generally two phases of composite they are matrix phase and reinforcement phase or dispersed
phase. Matrix is the primary phase, having a continuous character, and its usually more ductile and
less hard phase, it hold the dispersed phase and shares a load with it another one is reinforced
phase is embedded in the matrix in a discontinuous form. This secondary phase is dispersed phase
.it usually stronger then the matrix therefore it is sometimes act reinforcement phase.
Composition of fibres reinforced composite the fibres are important class of reinforcement, as they
satisfy the desired conditions and transfer strength to the matrix constituent influencing and
enhancing their properties as desire.
A polymer is defined as a long chain molecule containing one or more repeating units of atoms
joined together by strong covalent bonds. A polymeric material is a collection of a large number of
polymer molecules of similar chemical structure . matrix rein which provide the continuous phase
of the composite is expected to serve. Provide a uniform distribution of the structural and
environment load to the reinforcing fibre through a good adhesion and a strong interface with the

And the fact that it has not come far at all, the author states that it has come as far as surgery had
come in the year 1650. We don t know much about the complex parts of food like what makes up
the difference between two kinds of carbohydrates or two kinds of fat.
The quick fix is a text discussing the dangers of dietary supplements. They bring up a few facts of

body and the only thing that works is a persistent diet.
The third text, How food can improve your mental health shows the possible connection between
your diet and your mental health. Emma who is 34 years old was suffering from anxiety,

Discuss the Reasons We Forget, and Give at Least Three...
Memory refers to the processes that are used to store, retain and later retrieve information; these
processes are known as encoding, storage and retrieval. However with memory comes the natural
phenomenon of forgetting which refers to the inability to regain, recall or recognise information
that was, or still is, stored in long term memory. There are many reasons that we forget information
but these can be grouped into four main categories; retrieval failure, interference, failure to store
and motivated forgetting (Loftus 1999). Although there are also many strategies that we can use in
order to improve our memory.
Retrieval failure is one of the most common causes of forgetting and one possible explanation of
this is known as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overall it s difficult to study scientifically whether repression is the cause of memory loss for
negative events that have occurred (Holmes 1990). Amnesia is known to be one of the most
significant types of forgetting. This occurs when someone suffers memory loss due to special
conditions such as brain injury, illness or psychological trauma . In his book Human Memory:
Theory and Practice (1997) Baddeley refers to Amnesia as not an all or nothing condition in the
sense that amnesiacs can appear to be relatively normal. He speaks of a man called Clive
Wearing who, after being stricken with encephalitis causing him to be unconscious for many
weeks from an attack, suffered from Amnesia. Although Clive looked healthy his Amnesia was
so severe he couldn t remember more than a few minutes earlier, when his wife left the room on
her return he would greet her as if he d just woken from his coma despite it being months after.
Another type of forgetting is Dementia when impaired memory and other cognitive deficits
accompany brain degeneration and interfere with normal functioning. There are many causes of
dementia one of which being Alzheimer s disease which is a progressive brain disorder most
commonly found among people over the age of sixty five. This disease spreads across temporal
lobes to the frontal lobes and other cortical regions and as it progresses working and long term
memory get worse. Although there will be

Core Competence for Sustainable Competitive Advantage: A Structured Methodology for
Identifying Core Competence
Khalid Hafeez, YanBing Zhang, and Naila Malak
Abstract Core competencies are the crown jewels of a company and, therefore, should be carefully
nurtured and developed. Companies can determine their future business directions based on the
strengths of competencies. However, because generalized terms such as resource, asset, capability,
and competence are not clearly explained in connection with competence theory, these posing

III. CAPABILITY IS FORMED BY THE INTEGRATION OF RESOURCES Table I shows that
competitive advantage is gained by the strategic deployment of some resources, capabilities, and/or
competencies. Literature review suggests that concepts such as resources, capabilities,
competencies, and core competencies are not clearly defined. We have found that only the
resource itself is defined with a wide range of meanings. On one hand, resources are defined as
anything which could be thought of as a strength or weakness of a firm [9]. This anything may
include physical resources (e.g., raw materials, equipment, financial endowment, etc.), human
resources (e.g., training, experience, skills, etc.), as well as organizational resources (e.g., firm
image, process, routines, etc.) [4], [14]. Note that with this definition, capabilities are considered as
part of resource. On the other hand, capabilities are not part of resource because of their dynamic
doing nature. Many authors argue that capabilities are the result of resource deployment and
organizational processes. Capabilities use resources and, therefore, are more dynamic and complex
entity and should be treated independent to resources [15]. We feel more comfortable with Grant
[5] definition who argues: Resources are inputs into the

southern hemisphere during the northern winter. The Arctic tern breeds between May and July in
the Arctic and subarctic regions of Asia, North America and Europe, as far south as Massachusetts.
The Arctic tern has the K reproductive strategy because it only lays two eggs a year, each with a
high probability of survival into adulthood. The population size generally stays the same and equal
throughout the age demographics, a common characteristic of K reproductive strategists. The
community of the Arctic tern contains a wide range of species, as... Show more content on

It s all about survival. When the Arctic tern enters the southern hemisphere, summer starts over
and temperatures stay mild and within the tern s range of tolerance. Most Arctic terns spend the
first month of their migration in the north Atlantic ocean eating and collecting energy for the
long trip ahead. Some migrations have been over 44,000 miles long round trip, with the birds
rarely stopping for rest and food. The specific reason these animals migrate so far is widely
unknown, although it is assumed for survival or breeding purposes. Some scientists suggest that
it s because of the rich [polar] feeding grounds that they travel so far. If the migrations performed
by this organism were to stop, the population would decrease rapidly because the temperatures in
either one of their habitats will drop so low that they will be outside the Arctic tern s limits of
tolerance and the birds would freeze to death. Arctic terns also provide a great source of pest
control when they eat insects and worms during their migrations. This would then be lost if the
Arctic tern stopped migrating. The Arctic tern has an annual mortality rate of 18%, according to
a study in the Farne Islands. Over 50% of the species will live past their 30th birthday, with an
average lifespan of 20 years, an anomaly for birds, who normally live between 2 and 5

Essay on Korea
The Korean Religious Heritage
Korea s religious heritage has contributed to the teaching of the Unification Church. Since it first
appeared on Korean soil and was nourished by the Korean philosophy of life, the new movement
was naturally influenced to some extent by its environment. Just as Eastern Orthodoxy cannot be
understood apart from Christian Hellenism, and Roman Catholicism is a product of Latin
civilization, so the Unification Church greatly profited from the religious development of its
homeland.
Korea s indigenous religion, like that of most early cultures, was a form of shamanism. This original
faith has never completely disappeared and still exerts considerable influence. Ancient Koreans
believed in a variety of supernatural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Let me mention five. First, Buddhism is a religion which stresses the need for salvation. According
to Gautama s four fold truth, every man suffers because of his insatiable desires. Men find
themselves caught in a ceaseless craving for pleasure which inevitably results in disappointment,
pain, frustration and emptiness. What Buddhism offers is a way to escape this meaningless merry
go round.
Secondly, according to Buddha, liberation or enlightenment can only be achieved as a result of self
discipline and self denial. There is no easy way out of the human predicament. An individual must
curb his sensuous desires and master his body. Gradually but vigorously he must extinguish the
craving for physical pleasures. To accomplish this, Buddhists have to practice strenuous moral and
intellectual disciplines.
Thirdly, Mahayana Buddhism reinforces the stem ethic of Gautama s teachings with a vivid
eschatology. Those who live morally here on earth will be rewarded by the bliss of the Pure Land
Paradise. But those who violate the moral commandments will be punished in hell until they have
paid for their folly. At least in popular Buddhism (that taught to the laity), the promise of heavenly
reward and the threat of hell s torments have been an important stimulus to ethical behavior.
Fourthly, Mahayana Buddhism emphasizes the supreme value of self sacrifice. The highest ideal is
to be a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva is one who has earned the right to enjoy the

many companies? He completed all of those careers throughout his lifetime. Armstrong was born

Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development Applied to...
Erik Erikson believed that individual development takes place in a social context. He believed
that development is a lifelong process. His theory contains eight stages of development that
occur at different points in an individual s life. At each stage, the individual has, what he
believed as, a developmental crisis. Developmental crises are issues in the stage that must be
dealt with in order to move on to the next stage. Each stage offers an outcome as to what will
happen if the crisis is not resolved. Incomplete development of one stage can effect later
development. Erikson s developmental model can be used to determine when it is appropriate for
an individual to learn how to use computers. The model can also help determine what... Show more

Children in this stage may start using the computer on their own. Parents and teachers should only
offer assistance when the child becomes frustrated. By this stage they should be able to use the
mouse and click on various options by themselves (Kid Source Online, 2001). In this stage,
computers teach children to learn hand eye coordination, memory and matchmaking, logical
thinking, identifying opposites, problem solving, music and rhythm, and creativity stimulation
(Kid Source Online, 2001). The fourth stage of development is industry versus inferiority. This
occurs from age six to age twelve. Children in this stage either develop a sense of their own
competence at tasks or they end up believing they are not capable of succeeding. Children learn to
use tools and make things. They are making the transition from home to school. A sense of
identity outside of the home is required. If children are successful in being productive and seeking
success then they will develop competence. If they do not develop competence, they will develop a
sense of inferiority. Parents and teachers should provide children with the opportunity to set goals
and challenge themselves. This is a good time for parents to supply children with daily chores or
tasks to complete. Children in this stage of development should have no problem learning and
continuing to use computers. In this stage of development, computers may be used to enhance
language skills,

The Science of Shopping versus The Signs of Shopping Two Sides of an Issue Shopping has
become a daily activity which happens a billion times in America and around the world. We cannot
imagine how our lives would be affected if shopping was suddenly stopped. Malcolm Gladwell and
Anne Norton both write articles about two sides of modern day shopping: how consumers have
impacted the retail industry and how the industry influences consumers. In the article The Science
of Shopping, Malcolm Gladwell, a well known writer and journalist, analyzes the shopping
behaviors of customers and how retailers can lure customers; while Anne Norton, a professor of
political science at the University of Pennsylvania, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Gladwell writes What Paco likes are facts (100). The sentence is short but strong
and clear enough to emphasize the idea of the following paragraph. The way Gladwell describes
Paco Underhill and his expression of Paco is objective. Although Gladwell says It isn t a hostile
gaze, because Paco isn t hostile at all, readers do not find any kind of subjective emotion in his
article (102). He keeps his tone throughout the article neutral, neither positive nor negative. This
is one of the strongest points that makes his essay more convincing compared with Norton s
essay. Gladwell is specific when talking about Paco. He gives a brief description of Paco and the
way he feels when he interacts with Paco: Paco Underhill is a tall man in his mid forties, partly
bald, with a neatly trimmed beard and an engaging, almost goofy manner (Gladwell 98). This
gives readers a clear image of Paco Underhill like he actually stands before them. In contrast,
Norton shows her negative voice in the Shopping at the Mall part of the article. Norton writes
Those who own and manage the mall restrict what come within their confines (105). Using many
strong verbs, restrict, permit and a clear negative tone, Norton strongly confirms that Neither
freedom of speech nor freedom of assembly is permitted there (105). Despite

An Inside Look at Sadomasochism Essay
An Inside Look at S M
Roy F. Baumeister explores the taboo lifestyles of sadomasochism. The main theme and purpose of
the piece is to find out who are masochists, and what do they put themselves through in the name of
pleasure. Across the country, from sophisticated cities to subdued suburbs, men and women are
acting out fantasies of sexual domination and submission. (Psychology Today 47) I believe that
Baumeister describes a very accurate portrait of who one specific group of masochists is and what
they do for pleasure, however, I feel that he fails to recognize the younger generation of masochists.
I also feel that on the issue symbolic of sex change, Baumeister does not elaborate enough.
Baumeister s findings show that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Baumeister claims that these fantasies can range from wanting to be blindfolded during intercourse
to wanting to be bound and gagged or handcuffed.
Pain, being something that most humans would try to get away from at all costs is something that
is sought out and even craved by the masochist. The pain fantasy seems to be the one that has the
widest range of practices. According to Baumeister, some people enjoy an old fashioned, bare
bottomed, over the knee spanking, (Psychology Today 47) where others would prefer having hot
candle wax dripped on them. Still others enjoy needles and being whipped.
The third masochistic practice that Baumeister addresses is humiliation. Some of the practices
include being forced to walk on all fours, and bark like a dog or being paraded around naked in
front of others who are wearing clothes. There is one memorable image that Baumeister depicts
of humiliation, in which a man for his wife s birthday party had her displayed naked on the hors d
oeuvre table, so that every party goer who reached for a cracker or the vegetable dip had to reach
across her bare self. (Psychology Today 47)
In this essay I believe that Baumeister did a very good job with informing the audience in a
descriptive way what exactly masochism is, but I do also feel that there is at least one point that
he did not address as well as a few that he could have elaborated on better.
One of the issues that he doesn t address is the fact that the

Characteristics Of Odysseus A Hero
A hero is a character who has outstanding qualities and will go out of there way to help others.
But if you were to ask a group of people what they believe a hero is, most might say the same
thing. Many would say that its a person who would do anything to help others, including sacrificing
themselves for that cause. Odysseusmight look like a hero to some but if you were to look a little
deeper, he doesn t have that many qualities that a hero typically has. In the book, Odysseus does
nothing out of the honesty of his heart. Even if Odysseus fought in the Trojan War, he is not a hero
due to him being self centered and ignorant to other character s needs. Odysseus is not a hero
because he is 1. Odysseus is cold hearted 2. Odysseus is disloyal 3. Odysseus is self centered
Reason # 1:
Odysseus does not fit the piece of the hero profile which incorporates having a great heart.
Odysseus does not posses any of the traits that a hero has since he kills characters without giving
them a chance. Odysseus executed each one of the suitors in cold blood when the majority of
them didn t perpetrate a wrongdoing appropriate for capital punishment. He likewise executed the
majority of the house keepers who were assaulted by the suitors as though had a decision in the
issue. Odysseus likewise couldn t care less about his group individuals. At the point when Elpenor

Utopians have balance and this causes harmony, while subjects and rulers must know and not
step out of their roles because it would lead to downfall. Utopians all have an equal work load
this is very common in families; the husband works and brings in money while the wife stays
home and keeps the house and children in order, the children provide a job for the wife and in
time will help their mother. This is all equal work because the without the husband there would
be no food, without the wife the house would become chaotic, and without children the wife
would have nothing to keep her busy which results in laziness and no prosper, if all those who
work away at pointless tasks and, together with them, that whole crowd of lazy, languid idlers, if
they all were put to work and useful work at that you can easily see how little time would be
enough to produce all thee goods required for human needs (More 1711). This highlights the
importance of work, without everyone pulling their own weight others suffer and must work twice
as hard instead of harmonically. Rulers have an important job that promises prosperity to their
territory. This job requires them to provide hope to subjects, because without hope people began to

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Novel
The use of irony in the novel also contributes to its postmodernism. Many postmodernists treat
serious subjects jovially to distance themselves from the difficult subject. They evoke black
humor and different types of irony to offer critics of society and to display how society should not
fear dark and somber things. DeLillo sprinkles irony all throughout his story using it even at the
most serious of times. He uses it to show how the characters should not feardeath and how the
characters ignore danger when the smoke alarm went off in the hallway upstairs, either to let us
know the battery had just died or because the house was on fire (8) and they did nothing about
the possible imminent danger. DeLillo also uses irony to mock certain characters and expose
the ridiculousness of certain beliefs and customs. When Jack s boss advises him to change his
name and appearance to gain more prestige, the change they make is pretentious as it is the same
name only without one letter, we finally agreed that I should event an extra initial and call
myself J.A.K Gladney (16). DeLillo continues to ridicule society and its principles by exposing
absurdity such as Jack not knowing German despite being the founder of Hitler studies and his
college requiring all Hitler majors to understand some of the language, I had long tried to conceal
the fact that I did not know German (31). The use of irony not only gives the novel a lighter tone,
but also exposes DeLillo s critique of society

Dr. Seuss Instruments
The synopsis of the process of the Dr. Seuss theme instrument. The design of our project was
based upon the instruments seen in the Dr. Seuss novels. The instrument is multi colored and
similar to the color scheme found on the cover of the book, Oh, the Places You ll Go. The shape
and unique structure are also attributed to many distinctive instruments found in Dr. Seuss
stories. We decided to have two mouthpieces available, so two people can play the instrument at
the same time and the overall structure characterizes the disproportionate instruments seen in
the books. Going with the theme, the sound created is also very interesting. When assembling
the instrument, we had stuck wax paper between the parts of the pipe, creating a kazoo like
sound. We had chosen to use PVC pipes in order to lock in the sound, leaving no air to escape,
and funnels in order to amplify the sound being given off. Before our final design, there had
happened to be another idea we were going for. The design had included a chamber that would
contain soft air gun pellets or bb gun pellets that were capped off by 3D printed discs, covering
each end of the side chambers. These discs would have holes that would allow air to enter the
chamber, move the pellets around and create a rattle sound... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Descriptive Essay About Trail Riding
Do you ever have a dream where you re falling, and it feels so real that your body wakes you up?
Well this was not a dream. I was falling, and there was no bed for me to wake up in.
Growing up I was always around horses. My mom got into horses as a teenager, and they never
left her heart. The minute I was born I was put up in the saddle. Where most families would bond
by going swimming, hiking, or to watch a movie, my family bonded by going horseback riding.
(Or as we call it, trail riding.) The first horse I remember riding was a beautiful mare (girl horse)
named Angel. She was a sweet old white quarter horse who took care of everyone who rode her.
I went on many trail rides with her and when she passed away I learned at the early age of six
that people s deaths aren t the only deaths we morn. Eventually I moved on and started riding a
new horse whose name was Tanka.
Tanka was a stubborn and sassy sorrel mare. I really didn t ride her on my own because she
probably would ve taken advantage of me being a beginner. Since I couldn t ride her on my own
my sister Lisa usually rode along on Tanka while I sat behind the saddle, holding on to the edge of
it for dear life. One cloudy mid September day my mom decided we should go on a trail ride. Since
we didn t have enough horses for everyone who wanted to come on the ride, my mom came up
with a plan.
She planned that me, Lisa, and my mom s friend Lori should ride down the road to meet my mom
and her other friends at their house

The Parker Brothers Monopoly Board Game
Monopoly Monopoly is a board game that was first published by the Parker Brothers, an American
toy and game manufacturer, in 1935. Known also as The Fast Dealing Property Trading Game,
Monopoly is a game about owning the most properties, having the most money, and defeating your
competition by leading them to declare bankruptcy. Monopolyallows you to do this through
different opportunities of charging rent for the properties you own when another player lands on

If you are looking for a quick and fun game to play, it is best that you steer away from Monopoly.
The game play starts out with everyone slowly buying properties and collecting full property
sets that you must have to be able to build your houses and hotels on. This process can be made
especially longer when house rules are added. House rules are unofficial game rules that many
people add when playing the game. Some house rules can include the rule of not being able to
buy any properties until you have taken a full turn around the board and depending on how high
you roll, this can be very time consuming. Another downside of the game is how players can be
easily eliminated early in the game. If an unexperienced Monopoly player begins the game by
buying everything they land on and spending their money without strategizing properly, they will
easily go bankrupt and be left to watch the other players for a few hours until the game is over.
Lastly, another weakness that the Monopoly board game has is how your success in the game is
highly based on luck. After all the initial buying, trading, and building, it is left up to how lucky
you are to have people land on your properties. At this point in the game, it is just a matter of a few
unlucky rolls until people start going

Athletics And Persons With Disabilities
Athletics and Persons with Disabilities It wasn t that long ago when the words athletics and
persons with disabilities did not belong together. If a person was born with a physical or
intellectual disability, sports fell into the group of activities that were excluded from their life. If
an athlete acquired a physical or intellectual disability, sports became an activity they could no
longer participate in. Sports and athletic pursuits belonged solely to non disabled persons.
Persons with disabilities could only watch from the sidelines. Our society did not encourage or
support any physical sports programs that allowed persons with disabilities to pursue their athletic
dreams. Slowly, a cultural shift has altered our perception of what is possible for persons with
disabilities. Part of this shift can be attributed to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960 s. Once
the Civil Rights Act was signed into law, the walls of discrimination and segregation began to
crumble. Although the Civil Rights Act initially sought to ensure equality for African Americans
and other people of color, it eventually expanded to protect other vulnerable classes in our society.1
A piece of legislation that has contributed greatly to the rights of those with disabilities is the
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This legislation is considered as far reaching and
important as the Civil Rights Act. The core of the legislation focuses on prohibiting discrimination

Analysis Of The Garden Of Earthly Delights
Art is all around us and whether we notice it or not we are always evaluating, deconstructing, and
deciding on if we like it or not. The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch is a triptych
done in the Renaissance period. A triptych is a painting or relief carving that has three different
panels and are hinged together side by side. I first came across this paintingin my art history class
in high school and from then on I loved it due to all the imagery, colors, and the overall meaning
that it had. Ever since then this artwork has left a big imprint and got me to think about art as
much more than a picture, but to look at it as a whole and analyze it. This painting always
seemed interesting and intriguing for a couple of reasons. There are many themes going on, the
colors are very monochrome but yet look vivid and life like, and it has a very deep meaning
with the themes of mortality, sin, and shows the end results for evil doings. The triptych has
three different panels and all three have their own story to tell. When the triptych is closed and
both left and right sections are shut you see the world in tones of gray or neutral colors. At the
uppermost left corner of the closed sections you can see a depiction of God looking down at the
world with an open book in his hands. The first one on the left tells the story of how God

The Major Causes Of The Bosnian Civil War
Since the end of World War Two, no conflict in Europe was as barbarous as the Civil War that

100,000 dead and 2.2 million displaced people. This disastrous ethnic cleansing involved the
breakup of Yugoslavia into six smaller states including: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina,

were spread out across the region and not simply contained to one area allowing for the violent

Yugoslavia, new evidence from historians have shown that the Bosnian Civil War was not a one
time deal in the area. This had been considered a very active region, in the case of violence, during
the 20th century making some historians to think that this conflict was bound to happen as it had

occurred due to the fall of Communism. Although this is somewhat indirect, different ethnicities

The Importance Of Physical Fitness Among Children
Introduction The importance of physical activity remains crucial throughout one s entire life.
An individual s physical fitness begins at the early stages of youth and is necessary to promote
a healthy lifestyle in their future. There is currently 38.1% of American children age 2 19 that
are either obese or overweight. (Myoungock Whittemore, 2015). Since obesity among children is
a growing phenomenon, physical fitness can ensure that children are preventing diseases for
their future. Today 70% of American children age 5 to 17 that are obese or overweight have at
risk factors for a least one cardiovascular disease (CVD) and another 39% have two or more risk
factors (Myoungock Whittemore, 2015). A lack of physical fitness is a growing issue within the
US and nowadays children aren t meeting the necessary fitness recommendations per day. Recent
recommendations for physical activity among children... includes at least 1 hour a day... 8% of
American adolescents meet these recommendations. (Cradock, Ichiro, Molnar Pabayo, 2014). The
purpose of this paper is to further the knowledge of parents, guardians and health care providers of
the mental and physical health concerns associated with no physical activity performed in younger
children. This will be shown through the barriers and and challenges children and their parents face
together. With heightened costs of organized sports programs, safety issues, and stress caused by

In 2011, three of the largest firms involved in commercial litigation lending were Burford Capital, Bentham IMF, and Juridica Investments. All three were publicly traded on foreign exchanges, and each invested heavily in the United States civil justice system. How the Litigation Finance Market Worked Non recourse loans were extended most often to plaintiffs in personal injury cases. These loans were used to pay the costs of litigation, but, in some cases, were also used to cover the plaintiff s living expenses during the pendency of the lawsuit. Non recourse financing of commercial claims came into existence in the 2000s and became increasingly common. The providers of this financing typically undertook an analysis of the merits of the contemplated claim that was more rigorous than the analysis employed in personal injury cases. If the claim appeared meritorious, the financing company advanced amounts to cover attorney s fees and the other costs of the litigation. These advances typically were made to the claimant or its outside litigation counsel, in return for a percentage of any eventual recovery. The recent trend in the use of non recourse litigation financing attracted increasing attention, both within and outside the legal profession, in part because the arrangements were largely unregulated, and required the payment of relatively large financing fees. • 6. Music And Its Influence On Music Introduction: Music is a very telling form of expression. Whether it is the lyrics themselves, the tone in which they re said or the rhythm of the music, there are many methods in which music expresses the artist s opinion to his audience. The introduction of new methods of expression in music by tinkering with old methods are how new musical ideas are discovered. In the past, Miles Davis explorations into jazz fusion and modal jazz music pushed the envelope. For in this quote we get a context about just how important jazz is to Parisian culture. This can speak to our claim that Miles, along with other black music artists, fit into the role of entertainment to the French. The Domestication of the Last Frontier Essay The Domestication of the Last Frontier In 1865 the frontier line generally followed the western limits of the states bordering the Mississippi River, bulging outward to include the eastern sections of Kansas and Nebraska. Beyond this thin edge of pioneer farms, lay the prairie and sagebrush lands that stretched to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Then, for nearly 1,600 kilometers, loomed the huge bulk of mountain ranges, many rich in silver, gold and other metals. (Tindall 878) Unfortunately for the would be farmers, the land itself was suited more for cattle ranching than farming, and by 1880 nearly 22,400,000 hectares of free land was in the hands of cattlemen or the railroads. In 1862 Congress also voted a charter to the Union Pacific Railroad, which pushed westward from Council Bluffs, Iowa, using mostly the labor of ex soldiers and Irish immigrants. At the same time, the Central Pacific Railroad began to build eastward from Sacramento, California, relying heavily on Chinese immigrant labor. The whole country was stirred as the two lines steadily approached each other, finally meeting on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Point in Utah. The months of laborious travel hitherto separating the two oceans was now cut to about six days. Some migrations have been over 44,000 miles long round trip, with the birds rarely stopping for rest and food. The specific reason these animals migrate so far is widely unknown, although it is assumed for survival or breeding purposes. Some scientists suggest that it s because of the rich [polar] feeding grounds that they travel so far. If the migrations performed by this organism were to stop, the population would decrease rapidly because the temperatures in either one of their habitats will drop so low that they will be outside the Arctic tern s limits of tolerance and the birds would freeze to death. According to Gautama s four fold truth, every man suffers because of his insatiable desires. What Buddhism offers is a way to escape this meaningless merry go round. Secondly, according to Buddha, liberation or enlightenment can only be achieved as a result of self discipline and self denial. There is no easy way out of the human predicament. An individual must curb his sensuous desires and master his body. Gradually but vigorously he must extinguish the craving for physical pleasures. To accomplish this, Buddhists have to practice strenuous moral and intellectual disciplines. Thirdly, Mahayana Buddhism reinforces the stem ethic of Gautama s teachings with a vivid eschatology. Those who live morally here on earth will be rewarded by the bliss of the Pure Land Paradise. But those who violate the moral commandments will be punished in hell until they have paid for their folly. • 24. Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development Applied to... Erik Erikson believed that individual development takes place in a social context. He believed that development is a lifelong process. His theory contains eight stages of development that occur at different points in an individual s life. At each stage, the individual has, what he believed as, a developmental crisis. Developmental crises are issues in the stage that must be dealt with in order to move on to the next stage. Each stage offers an outcome as to what will happen if the crisis is not resolved. Incomplete development of one stage can effect later development. The fourth stage of development is industry versus inferiority. This occurs from age six to age twelve. Children in this stage either develop a sense of their own competence at tasks or they end up believing they are not capable of succeeding. Children learn to use tools and make things. They are making the transition from home to school. A sense of identity outside of the home is required. If children are successful in being productive and seeking success then they will develop competence. If they do not develop competence, they will develop a sense of inferiority. Parents and teachers should provide children with the opportunity to set goals and challenge themselves. This is a good time for parents to supply children with daily chores or tasks to complete. WRIT 102 Feb 24, 2013 The Science of Shopping versus The Signs of Shopping Two Sides of an Issue Shopping has become a daily activity which happens a billion times in America and around the world. We cannot imagine how our lives would be affected if shopping was suddenly stopped. Malcolm Gladwell and Anne Norton both write articles about two sides of modern day shopping: how consumers have impacted the retail industry and how the industry influences consumers. In the article The Science of Shopping, Malcolm Gladwell, a well known writer and journalist, analyzes the shopping behaviors of customers and how retailers can lure customers; while Anne Norton, a professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, in ... Although Gladwell says It isn t a hostile gaze, because Paco isn t hostile at all, readers do not find any kind of subjective emotion in his article (102). He keeps his tone throughout the article neutral, neither positive nor negative. This is one of the strongest points that makes his essay more convincing compared with Norton s essay. Gladwell is specific when talking about Paco. He gives a brief description of Paco and the way he feels when he interacts with Paco: Paco Underhill is a tall man in his mid forties, partly bald, with a neatly trimmed beard and an engaging, almost goofy manner (Gladwell 98). This gives readers a clear image of Paco Underhill like he actually stands before them. In contrast, Norton shows her negative voice in the Shopping at the Mall part of the article. Norton writes Those who own and manage the mall restrict what come within their confines (105). Using many strong verbs, restrict, permit and a clear negative tone, Norton strongly confirms that Neither freedom of speech nor freedom of assembly is permitted there (105). Despite ... • 27. An Inside Look at Sadomasochism Essay An Inside Look at S M Roy F. Baumeister explores the taboo lifestyles of sadomasochism. The main theme and purpose of the piece is to find out who are masochists, and what do they put themselves through in the name of pleasure. Across the country, from sophisticated cities to subdued suburbs, men and women are acting out fantasies of sexual domination and submission. (Psychology Today 47) I believe that Baumeister describes a very accurate portrait of who one specific group of masochists is and what they do for pleasure, however, I feel that he fails to recognize the younger generation of masochists. Pain, being something that most humans would try to get away from at all costs is something that is sought out and even craved by the masochist. The pain fantasy seems to be the one that has the widest range of practices. According to Baumeister, some people enjoy an old fashioned, bare bottomed, over the knee spanking, (Psychology Today 47) where others would prefer having hot candle wax dripped on them. Still others enjoy needles and being whipped. The third masochistic practice that Baumeister addresses is humiliation. Some of the practices include being forced to walk on all fours, and bark like a dog or being paraded around naked in front of others who are wearing clothes. There is one memorable image that Baumeister depicts of humiliation, in which a man for his wife s birthday party had her displayed naked on the hors d oeuvre table, so that every party goer who reached for a cracker or the vegetable dip had to reach across her bare self. (Psychology Today 47) In this essay I believe that Baumeister did a very good job with informing the audience in a descriptive way what exactly masochism is, but I do also feel that there is at least one point that he did not address as well as a few that he could have elaborated on better. Odysseusmight look like a hero to some but if you were to look a little deeper, he doesn t have that many qualities that a hero typically has. In the book, Odysseus does nothing out of the honesty of his heart. Even if Odysseus fought in the Trojan War, he is not a hero due to him being self centered and ignorant to other character s needs. Odysseus is not a hero because he is 1. Odysseus is cold hearted 2. Odysseus is disloyal 3. Odysseus is self centered Reason # 1: Odysseus does not fit the piece of the hero profile which incorporates having a great heart. Odysseus does not posses any of the traits that a hero has since he kills characters without giving them a chance. • 30. Rhetorical Analysis Of The Novel The use of irony in the novel also contributes to its postmodernism. Many postmodernists treat serious subjects jovially to distance themselves from the difficult subject. They evoke black humor and different types of irony to offer critics of society and to display how society should not fear dark and somber things. DeLillo sprinkles irony all throughout his story using it even at the most serious of times. He uses it to show how the characters should not feardeath and how the characters ignore danger when the smoke alarm went off in the hallway upstairs, either to let us know the battery had just died or because the house was on fire (8) and they did nothing about the possible imminent danger. DeLillo also uses irony to mock certain characters and expose the ridiculousness of certain beliefs and customs. When Jack s boss advises him to change his name and appearance to gain more prestige, the change they make is pretentious as it is the same name only without one letter, we finally agreed that I should event an extra initial and call myself J.A.K Gladney (16). DeLillo continues to ridicule society and its principles by exposing absurdity such as Jack not knowing German despite being the founder of Hitler studies and his college requiring all Hitler majors to understand some of the language, I had long tried to conceal the fact that I did not know German (31). The use of irony not only gives the novel a lighter tone, but also exposes DeLillo s critique of society ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Dr. Seuss Instruments The synopsis of the process of the Dr. Seuss theme instrument. The design of our project was based upon the instruments seen in the Dr. Seuss novels. The instrument is multi colored and similar to the color scheme found on the cover of the book, Oh, the Places You ll Go. The shape and unique structure are also attributed to many distinctive instruments found in Dr. Seuss stories. We decided to have two mouthpieces available, so two people can play the instrument at the same time and the overall structure characterizes the disproportionate instruments seen in the books. Going with the theme, the sound created is also very interesting. When assembling the instrument, we had stuck wax paper between the parts of the pipe, creating a kazoo like sound. We had chosen to use PVC pipes in order to lock in the sound, leaving no air to escape, and funnels in order to amplify the sound being given off. Before our final design, there had happened to be another idea we were going for. The design had included a chamber that would contain soft air gun pellets or bb gun pellets that were capped off by 3D printed discs, covering each end of the side chambers. These discs would have holes that would allow air to enter the chamber, move the pellets around and create a rattle sound... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I went on many trail rides with her and when she passed away I learned at the early age of six that people s deaths aren t the only deaths we morn. If you are looking for a quick and fun game to play, it is best that you steer away from Monopoly. The game play starts out with everyone slowly buying properties and collecting full property sets that you must have to be able to build your houses and hotels on. This process can be made especially longer when house rules are added. House rules are unofficial game rules that many people add when playing the game. Some house rules can include the rule of not being able to buy any properties until you have taken a full turn around the board and depending on how high you roll, this can be very time consuming. Another downside of the game is how players can be easily eliminated early in the game. If an unexperienced Monopoly player begins the game by buying everything they land on and spending their money without strategizing properly, they will easily go bankrupt and be left to watch the other players for a few hours until the game is over. Lastly, another weakness that the Monopoly board game has is how your success in the game is highly based on luck. After all the initial buying, trading, and building, it is left up to how lucky you are to have people land on your properties. If a person was born with a physical or intellectual disability, sports fell into the group of activities that were excluded from their life. If an athlete acquired a physical or intellectual disability, sports became an activity they could no longer participate in. Sports and athletic pursuits belonged solely to non disabled persons. Persons with disabilities could only watch from the sidelines. Our society did not encourage or support any physical sports programs that allowed persons with disabilities to pursue their athletic dreams. Slowly, a cultural shift has altered our perception of what is possible for persons with disabilities. Part of this shift can be attributed to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960 s. Once the Civil Rights Act was signed into law, the walls of discrimination and segregation began to crumble. Although the Civil Rights Act initially sought to ensure equality for African Americans and other people of color, it eventually expanded to protect other vulnerable classes in our society.1 A piece of legislation that has contributed greatly to the rights of those with disabilities is the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This legislation is considered as far reaching and important as the Civil Rights Act. The core of the legislation focuses on prohibiting discrimination against persons ... A triptych is a painting or relief carving that has three different panels and are hinged together side by side. I first came across this paintingin my art history class in high school and from then on I loved it due to all the imagery, colors, and the overall meaning that it had. Ever since then this artwork has left a big imprint and got me to think about art as much more than a picture, but to look at it as a whole and analyze it. This painting always seemed interesting and intriguing for a couple of reasons. There are many themes going on, the colors are very monochrome but yet look vivid and life like, and it has a very deep meaning with the themes of mortality, sin, and shows the end results for evil doings. The triptych has three different panels and all three have their own story to tell. When the triptych is closed and both left and right sections are shut you see the world in tones of gray or neutral colors. At the uppermost left corner of the closed sections you can see a depiction of God looking down at the world with an open book in his hands. This had been considered a very active region, in the case of violence, during the 20th century making some historians to think that this conflict was bound to happen as it had occurred various other times in the past.
