As the U.S. population becomes more diverse, it’s no wonder that students perform better when their
teachersandschoolleadersreflectthe‘meltingpot’studentsseeintheircommunities,onlineandonTV.
But true teacher and staff diversity means filling classrooms and campuses with numerous employees
from various races, ethnicities and backgrounds — not just recruiting more minority candidates.
Here’s what research says about the benefits and challenges of K-12 diversity...
• From 1987 to 2012, the number of minority teachers
increased by 5%, but they tend to be concentrated in urban schools
serving high-poverty, minority communities.
• Minority teachers are hired at similar rates as white teachers but they
leave at a higher rate — surveys suggest this is largely related to poor
working conditions in high-poverty schools.

• In Tennessee, same-race pairing of students
and teachers increased students’ math scores
by 3-4 points and reading by 1-2 points —
that’s about a third of the achievement gap.
• Analysis of more than 500 studies from 1940 to 2000 showed
greater contact between groups led to lower intergroup prejudice.
• Students in racially diverse schools have improved critical thinking
skills, reduced prejudice, and are more likely to live and work in
integrated environments later in life.
