Approximately one in four Year 4 to Year 9
Australian students (27%) reported being bullied
every few weeks or more often.
Lack of a shared definition of bullying can hamper
finding lasting solutions.
Students may not report bullying to the school
because they fear not being believed or making things

Approximately one in five young school students
reported experiencing online bullying in any one year.
Hurtful teasing was the most common bullying

WRITE TO LEARN
Recall speakers whose performances you have enjoyed. For instance, you may have had an instructor who held your attention from the moment you entered the classroom. Perhaps you appreciated a speaker at a club meeting or special event. What made these speakers effective communicators? List the qualities and actions that helped these speakers to be effective. For instance, consider these questions: What did the speaker do to get your attention at the beginning? What did the speaker provide as visual support so you could better understand the message?

For Elizabeth, a successful presentation is multifaceted: “A good presentation immediately provides an overview of where the presentation is going. It involves some sort of visual aid as well so that a listener is engaged both aurally and visually. Finally, I think anecdotes always make a presentation more interesting.”
When preparing a presentation, Elizabeth meticulously researches and outlines her material. “Research is such a key element, especially when preparing for a hearing before a judge. You need to be prepared to address any and all of the judge’s concerns. After researching, I outline my presentation. Following an outline ensures that I’m clear, concise, and that my audience can follow my reasoning.”

Cross-Cultural Communication
Culture is a shared set of beliefs and experiences common to people in a specific
setting. The setting that creates a culture can be geographic, religious, or
professional. As you might guess, the same individual can be a member of many
cultures, all of which may play a part in the interpretation of certain words.
The different and often “multicultural” identity of individuals in the same
organization can lead to some unexpected and potentially large
miscommunications. For example, during the Cold War, Soviet leader Nikita
Khruschev told the American delegation at the United Nations, “We will bury you!”
His words were interpreted as a threat of nuclear annihilation. However, a more
accurate reading of Khruschev’s words would have been, “We will overtake you!”
meaning economic superiority. The words, as well as the fear and suspicion that the
West had of the Soviet Union at the time, led to the more alarmist and sinister

Miscommunications can arise between individuals of the same culture as well.
Many words in the English language mean different things to different people.
Words can be misunderstood if the sender and receiver do not share common
experiences. A sender’s words cannot communicate the desired meaning if the
receiver has not had some experience with the objects or concepts the words

with individuals who may not speak English as a first language. For example, when
