MARXIST
THEORY
OF
DIVERGENT
The movie Divergent was directed by Neil Burger and it was released
by March 21,2014. The actress Shailene Woodley who is Tris Prior
lives in a futuristic world in which society is divided into five factions.
As each person enters adulthood, he or she must choose a faction and
commit to it for life. Tris chooses Dauntless -- those who pursue
bravery above all else. However, her initiation leads to the discovery
that she is a Divergent and will never be able to fit into just one
faction. Warned that she must conceal her status, Tris uncovers a
looming war which threatens everyone she loves.
Marxism, a body of doctrine which was
developed by Karl Marx to a lesser extent,
by Friedrich Engle's in the mid-19th
century. Karl Marx was a German Historian,
scholar, and a journalist who believed in the
foundation of how society functions. He
disagreed with the idea that everyone one
has an equal chance of social mobility. The
Marxism theory is both a social and
political theory, which encompasses Marxist
class conflict theory. Marxism helps to
consolidate, inspire, and radicalize elements
of the labor and socialist movements in
western Europe. Marxism was first publicly
formulated in the 1848 pamphlet, the
"Communist Manifesto," by Karl Marx and
Friedrich Engels, which lays out the theory
of class struggle and revolution. Overall, he
believed that if socio-economic class exists
so will inequality and oppression.
In the movie “Divergent” children who are around 16 years old must chose
between 5 different fractions. Those fractions are Abnegation (selflessness),
Dauntless (bravery), Erudite (knowledge), Candor (truth), and Amity
(peace). But each fraction power is not separated equality the leader of Erudite
Jeanie has the power amongst all. Jeanie believes she knows what's best for
everyone and how to keep a safe environment. According to 2 quotes in the
movie “Divergent” she states that “The system removes the threat of anyone
practicing their independent will. Divergence threatens that system. It won't be
safe until they're removed.” & “It's hard to let go. Faction before blood, it's an
important ideal, but sometimes difficult to fulfill. It goes against our
fundamental human nature. But that's exactly the weakness we need to
overcome.” The 1st quote demonstrates that being different from any fraction
can cause disaster in their society which in this case those who are different are
called Divergent. Now based on the 2nd quote Jeanie believes that fractions
should be every one’s top priory than family. That in order to keep “peace” its to
give up on your family and focus on being your fraction. Every single fraction
should forget where they came from since they would never ever go back to
their original families.
The movie “Divergent” a girl named Tris (Beatrice) must decide which
fraction to live in. But before choosing her fraction she amongst other
people must pass an initiation to see which fraction they most liking fit
in and if they don’t pass the become factionless (homeless). Tris is
different from many people in her society. She is a Divergent which
means that her personally doesn’t go with just one but all. That makes
one fraction called Erudite want to kill her since she is different and is
immune to many things (serum). According to “Divergent” she has
different experience than people “No, not impossible. It’s just
extremely rare. They call it Divergent. You can’t tell anyone about this,
not even your parents. As far as the world is concerned, you received
an Abnegation result because that is what I’m manually entering.” This
is a clear example that since she had a different result on her test, she
must keep it a secrete and never ever tell anyone what she got. That
means she could never show her true self which was all 5 fractions.
Now based on this other quote “Divergent will destroy our society.
Unless we destroy them.” This quote demonstrates that anyone who is
Divergent must die in other to maintain a “peaceful” society. If it where
any other fraction that were not Divergent, they would continue to live
their life happy.
In conclusion, the Marxist theory was created by Karl Marx which helps look at who is the most
powerful in society, how they use their power, and how the social classes interact with each
other. The movie Divergent is an example of the Marxist theory. In the movie there are 5
fractions each person must chose but with the idea that they can’t switch after they had picked.
Power is spread throughout each fraction but not equally. For example, Abnegation makes up
government, Dauntless basically in charge of military, Erudite makes all the technology and
medicine, Amity oversees agriculture and food, and Candor oversees law. Although they each
have a little power Erudite has the most over any other fraction. Erudite thinks that since they are
smartest out of everyone, they think they know the best for everyone. No knows what’s best for
someone else but rather than them. Along with the fractions there are Divergent that live
amongst them where they not only see themselves as one fraction but all 5 fractions.
