The document compares and contrasts the science fiction films The Hunger Games and Divergent. Both are based on popular young adult novels and feature teenage female protagonists, but have different plots, characters, and themes. The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian future where young people must fight to the death on television. Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place. Divergent takes place in a society divided into factions; the protagonist Beatrice discovers she is Divergent and does not fit into one group. While both depict dystopian futures, The Hunger Games focuses more on violence while Divergent emphasizes finding ways to survive and hide one's identity. Overall the document analyzes the differences between the

Architecture is a journey, it is a testimony of my maturity. From basic hand-drawn ideas to 3D render and graphics of projects. I always running in a jungle of trend and forecasts, pursuing inspiration every semester. Exploring on form, languages or experiential quality, sometimes it can be irrational. However, when architects create space which can be argued as successful, why not?
1. The Hunger Games and Divergent
Science fiction is the search for definition of man and his status in the
universe which will stand in our advanced but confused state of knowledge, and is
characteristically cast in the Gothic or post-Gothic mould.—Brian W. Aldiss in Trillion
Year Spree: the History of Science Fiction (London, 1986). While science fiction
movie are usually scientific, more futuristic and probably advanced in technology
gadget. This kind of movie often express the potential of technology destroy
humankind through events, such as wars, rebellion and disaster. In this few years,
two of the most popular science fiction movie of all ages falling in love with are The
Hunger Games director by Gary Ross and Divergent director by Neil Burger. Both of
this movie are transform from a teenage novel but they are still different in certain
point such as plot, characters and themes.
According to Suzanne Collins the writer of The Hunger Games say that this
movie is about a dystopian future, the totalitarian nation of Panem is divided into 12
districts and the Capitol. Each year two young representatives from each district are
selected randomly to participate in The Hunger Games. This game are a televised
games and broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate
their competitors while the citizens of Panem are required to watch. When 16-year-
old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative,
Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta Mellark,
are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives. On the other hand, according to
the writer of Divergent, Veronica Roth said that this movie is a futuristic society
where the five factions are the basis of the whole function which is Dauntless,
Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, and Candor. Beatrice Prior discovers that she's
Divergent, therefore does not fit in to one faction. If she is discovered, she will be
2. killed. She tries to keep her Divergence a secret, but throughout her vigorous
training, she reveals to the trainer, Tobias Four, her ability to manipulate the test and
that she is Divergent. Soon Beatrice and Four discover a plot to overthrow the
government, killing hundreds in the process, and they must do what they can to stop
it. With the power of Divergence, they may just be the only ones able to save their
whole world. Between this two movies, The Hunger Games is more towards violent,
they need to massacre one another. While Divergent is more to finding a way to hide
lies and keep ourselves survive.
Moreover, the main two actress in this two movies have different
characteristics. For Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games is strong because as a
sixteen-year-old girl she is far more mature than her age would suggest. She is the
main provider in her family after her dad had passed away in a mines explosion. On
the other hand. Beatrice Prior in Divergent was poor self- esteem compare to Katniss
Everdeen. She can be a straight up wrong a lot of the time. For example, Beatrice is
the kind of girl who notices when there's a conspiracy to use her current faction to kill
off her former faction, but she doesn't notice when a guy likes her. Katniss can’t be
poor self-esteem as Beatrice because she had to take care of her mother and also
her younger sister, Prim.
For the actor, Peeta in The Hunger Games show a characteristic of helpful. In
the movie, he helped save Katniss’s family from starvation by giving her loaves of
bread when she was a child. Peeta's kindness probably saved the lives of Katniss
and her family. While Tobias is the opposite of Peeta, he is poor and useless. For
example, Beatrice competes to stay in Dauntless and succeeds not entirely because
of him. She mostly seems to do well in the rankings because she's Divergent and
that's where her true power lies. Tobias left her away when she get punched.
3. Last but not least, the theme in this two movie were totally different. In the
movie of The Hunger Games, it consist the theme of inequality between rich and
poor. In Panem, wealth is heavily concentrated in the hands of the rich, particularly
those people living in the Capitol and certain of the districts, and the result is a huge
disparity between their lives and the lives of the poor. For those poor they don’t even
have enough to eat and choice to live with. While the themes in Divergent is identity
& Choices. In this movie Beatrice as a Divergent, her choice of faction defines her
more than anything else does. Though her aptitude test is inconclusive, she could be
a match to Abnegation, Erudite, or Dauntless. She had more option than Katniss
who just force to participate the Games.
In a nutshell, I prefer The Hunger Games rather than Divergent because of
Katniss’s characteristic. She is very independence and responsible than a normal 16
years old girl. Even though this both movies were different but they is still share
some same point. According to Veronica Roth, both movie had the setting of a
dystopia. A dystopia is the opposite of a utopia. A utopia is an ideal society which
doesn’t exist. In “Divergent”, the protagonist, who is a heroin, is and in “The Hunger
Games”, it’s Katniss. The dystopias in both stories were destroyed in the end
causing an uproar lead by the protagonists.
