Clinical signs include high fever, dullness, depression, and death within 2-3 days in the per acute form. The acute form shows sudden fever, lacrimation, nasal discharge, and congested mucous membranes followed by raised gray or white necrotic foci on the mouth that increase in size and number and may detach, leaving raw erosions.

Testing found the virus in eye and tissue samples from sick dogs. The virus was isolated and sequenced, identifying it as the Asia-1 lineage. This study concluded the outbreak was caused by canine distemper virus and vaccination is needed to control the disease and prevent spread to wildlife.

Some of the most common symptoms that dogs experience include conjunctivitis, diarrhea, and vomiting. It is also common for dog to experience pneumonia or signs of another upper respiratory infection. If your dog is infected with this virus, he may have eye inflammation, a fever, or lose his appetite. If the central nervous system is infected, your dog will experience depression, seizures, and loss of motor skills and mental abilities. If these symptoms occur, it may be assigned that there is something more seriously wrong with your dog. Canine distemper can sometimes be hard to diagnose since other conditions can cause some of its same symptoms. A laboratory test will need to be done to confirm a diagnosis. If a blood test is conducted, your dog will likely have a low number of white blood cells. Since distemper in dogs can cause damage to the intestinal lining, antibiotics may be given to prevent bacterial infections. Since most dogs experience diarrhea, medications can be given to get rid of it. Your dog will likely need intravenous fluids if the diarrhea lead to dehydration.
