Distance Learning
Distance education or distance learning is a mode of
delivering education and instruction, often on an
individual basis, to students who are not physically
present in a traditional setting such as a classroom.
Distance learning provides "access to learning when
the source of information and the learners are
separated by time and distance, or both.
History
and
development
Isaac pitman
Pioneer of distance
education in the 1840s in
England.
He taught a system of
shorthand by mailing texts
transcribed into shorthand
on postcards and receiving
transcriptions from his
students in return for
correction - the element of
student feedback was a
crucial innovation of
Pitman's system.
The University of London was the first university to
offer distance learning degrees, establishing
its External Programme in 1858.
William Rainey Harper
First president of
the University of Chicago
developed the concept of
extended education,
whereby the research
university had satellite
colleges of education in the
wider community.
In 1892 he also
encouraged the concept of
correspondence school
courses to further promote
education, an idea that was
put into practice
by Columbia University.
Major Benefits
Major benefits of use Distance education
provides major benefits to at least six main
markets or categories, such as:
•Expanding access
•Cost reduction
•Emerging market opportunities
•Adapting to new technology and environments
•New fund-raising opportunities
•Flexibility for students
What are the Benefits of Distance Learning?
What are the Benefits of Distance Learning?
• Distance education meets the needs of students
• flexibility and time .
•Increased access to learning / encourage life-long
learning .
•Increased compensation/ promotion potential have
access to experts
• Interstudents actor communication
• Utilization of email
• Financial benefits
• Social benefits
Distance e-Learning or DeL, is the combination of
Distance Education and e-Learning which is
characterized by the extensive use of Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) in the delivery of
education and instruction and the use of synchronous
and asynchronous online communication in an
interactive learning environment or virtual communities,
in lieu of a physical classroom, to bridge the gap in
temporal or spatial constraints. Distance e-Learning
combines the strengths and advantages of Distance
Education and e-Learning. "The focus is shifted to the
education transaction in the form of virtual community of
learners sustainable across time.
TEchnology
Web conferencing
Refers to a service that allows
conferencing events to be shared
with remote locations.
These are sometimes referred to
as webinars or, for interactive
conferences, online workshops.
The service allows real-
time point-to-
point communications as well
as multicast communications
from one sender to many
receivers.
It offers data streams of text-
based messages, voice
and video chat to be shared
simultaneously, across
geographically dispersed
locations. Applications
Educational television
Use of television
programs in the field
of distance education.
It may be in the form of
individual television
programs or
dedicated specialty
channels that is often
associated with cable
television in the United
States as Public,
educational, and
government access (PEG)
channel providers.
Live streaming
Refers to content
delivered live over the
Internet, requires a
camera for the media, an
encoder to digitize the
content, a media
publisher, and a content
delivery network to
distribute and deliver the
content.
Internet radio (also web
radio, net radio, streaming
radio, e-radio, online
radio, webcasting) is an audio
service transmitted via the Internet.
Broadcasting on the Internet is
usually referred to
as webcasting since it is not
transmitted broadly through
wireless means.
Internet radio involves streaming
media, presenting listeners with a
continuous stream of audio that
typically cannot be paused or
replayed, much like traditional
broadcast media; in this respect, it
is distinct from on-demand file
serving.
Web-based VoIP
Web-based VoIP is the
integration of voice over
IP technologies into the facilities
and methodologies of the World-
Wide Web. It enables digital
communication sessions
between Web users, or to users
of traditional telecommunication
services.
Instead of using dedicated, hard-
ware based VoIP devices, such
as IP phones, analog telephone
adapters, or integrated
VoIP/Internet access routers,
services are provided via a web
page and the facilities of the
user's computer or hand-held
device for accessing and
operating a locally attached head
set, and microphone.

Open High School Program
The Open High School Program (OHSP) is a distance learning program
for high school students who are unable to attend regular classes due to
physical, economic and geographical limitations. A part of the Drop Out
Reduction Program (DORP) of the Department of Education and funded by
the Asian Development Bank, the OHSP was first started in 1998 and is
now offered by an increasing number of public schools across the country.
Requirements
The OHSP is open to all
elementary school graduates,
high school drop-outs,
and Philippine Educational
Placement Test (PEPT) passers
who are Filipino citizens.
Interested applicants for the
OHSP must also undergo two
tests before being accepted to
the program: the Informal
Reading Inventory (IRI), to
measure reading levels, and the
