The importance of this assignment is to acknowledge that there are varied forms of knowing that form our perspectives in society and presenting how these varied forms of knowing have impacts and value. Social work builds its identity on social problems. The goal is
to generate knowledge about causes, consequences and solu-
tions. However, there is a lack of theory of social problems.
We suggest that research on social problems can benefit
by ‘bringing the observer in’: Loseke’s constructionist frame-
work and Luhmann’s systems theory. According to Loseke,
social problems appear differently when constructed by dif-
ferent observers. Constructions vary in terms of morality,
conditions, victims/villains and solutions. From Luhmann we
learn that modern society consists of a multitude of social
systems (e.g. politics, science, economy etc.), each operating
with their own communicative codes. Combining both
approaches, we hypothesise that any social system constructs
its own (version of) social problems. Illustrating with
the empirical case ‘suicide among mentally ill people’, we
examine how a phenomenon is constructed differently as a
social problem by four different social systems: the disability
movement, politics, medicine and social work.

Introduction
The academic discipline social work builds its identity
on the study of social problems. The goal is to generate
knowledge about causes, consequences and potential
solutions for social problems. This knowledge is
expected to be useful to practitioners working with
clients affected by different adverse conditions. In
empirical social work research on poverty, discrimina-
tion, social exclusion, homelessness, juvenile delin-
quency, domestic violence and human trafficking, it is
usually taken for granted what the ‘social problem’ is.
The social problem is treated as a deplorable circum-
stance about which something must be done (Holstein
& Miller, 1993a). It is therefore considered to be a
deviation from a desirable condition (how society ought
to be), how exposed groups suffer from these condi-
tions (Gould & Baldwin, 2004; Healy, 2001; Korpi,
Nelson, & Stenberg, 2007; Payne, 2005b; Trevithick,
2007) and what social work practitioners need to take
into consideration when dealing with those bearing the
symptoms of such conditions.

Sociology is the study of the relationship between individuals and their social contexts (Mills, 1959). Like other social scientists, sociologists are interested in understanding human behavior, and Sociology is focused on the social causes of human behavior. Humans are by nature social beings; we cannot survive unless we interact with other humans. But our interactions are not random, they are shaped by our social context, which consists of our relationships with others, our cultural values and beliefs, the rules of institutions (e.g., family, religion, government, economy) we participate in, our position in social hierarchies, and our experiences in previous interactions, among other things. All of these exert influence over our decisions and actions, by shaping how we perceive and interpret the actions of others around us.
Our relationships, social groups, organizations, social class, institutions, and culture―which taken together form the structure of our society―are created as we interact with others. Our experiences within our social structures always guide us as we interact with others, and by “acting normally” within the parameters of our social context, we reinforce all of the structures that constitute the context. Thus, our interactions are both shaping our social context, and also shaping us at the same time. Our social context and structures influence our own personalities, identities and worldviews. And these guide us in making decisions and in acting.
People experience interaction within these social structures over the course of a lifetime, beginning with interaction in the family, then among their neighbors, then with their teachers and classmates at school, perhaps in their church, later in the workplace, and so on. So, most of us do not think of ourselves as constructing the institutions―they are already in place when we are born and we live our lives within their rules. But, in fact, every time we adhere to time-honored means of interaction, we are essentially recreating that rule, and thus recreating the institution.

Social work builds its identity on social problems. The goal is
to generate knowledge about causes, consequences and solu-
tions. However, there is a lack of theory of social problems.
We suggest that research on social problems can benefit
by ‘bringing the observer in’: Loseke’s constructionist frame-
work and Luhmann’s systems theory. According to Loseke,
social problems appear differently when constructed by dif-
ferent observers. Constructions vary in terms of morality,
conditions, victims/villains and solutions. From Luhmann we
learn that modern society consists of a multitude of social
systems (e.g. politics, science, economy etc.), each operating
with their own communicative codes. Combining both
approaches, we hypothesise that any social system constructs
its own (version of) social problems. Illustrating with
the empirical case ‘suicide among mentally ill people’, we
examine how a phenomenon is constructed differently as a
social problem by four different social systems: the disability
movement, politics, medicine and social work.

Introduction
The academic discipline social work builds its identity
on the study of social problems. The goal is to generate
knowledge about causes, consequences and potential
solutions for social problems. This knowledge is
expected to be useful to practitioners working with
clients affected by different adverse conditions. In
empirical social work research on poverty, discrimina-
tion, social exclusion, homelessness, juvenile delin-
quency, domestic violence and human trafficking, it is
usually taken for granted what the ‘social problem’ is.
The social problem is treated as a deplorable circum-
stance about which something must be done (Holstein
& Miller, 1993a). It is therefore considered to be a
deviation from a desirable condition (how society ought
to be), how exposed groups suffer from these condi-
tions (Gould & Baldwin, 2004; Healy, 2001; Korpi,
Nelson, & Stenberg, 2007; Payne, 2005b; Trevithick,
2007) and what social work practitioners need to take
into consideration when dealing with those bearing the
symptoms of such conditions.

Sociology is the study of the relationship between individuals and their social contexts (Mills, 1959). Like other social scientists, sociologists are interested in understanding human behavior, and Sociology is focused on the social causes of human behavior. Humans are by nature social beings; we cannot survive unless we interact with other humans. But our interactions are not random, they are shaped by our social context, which consists of our relationships with others, our cultural values and beliefs, the rules of institutions (e.g., family, religion, government, economy) we participate in, our position in social hierarchies, and our experiences in previous interactions, among other things. All of these exert influence over our decisions and actions, by shaping how we perceive and interpret the actions of others around us.
Our relationships, social groups, organizations, social class, institutions, and culture―which taken together form the structure of our society―are created as we interact with others. Our experiences within our social structures always guide us as we interact with others, and by “acting normally” within the parameters of our social context, we reinforce all of the structures that constitute the context. Thus, our interactions are both shaping our social context, and also shaping us at the same time. Our social context and structures influence our own personalities, identities and worldviews. And these guide us in making decisions and in acting.
People experience interaction within these social structures over the course of a lifetime, beginning with interaction in the family, then among their neighbors, then with their teachers and classmates at school, perhaps in their church, later in the workplace, and so on. So, most of us do not think of ourselves as constructing the institutions―they are already in place when we are born and we live our lives within their rules. But, in fact, every time we adhere to time-honored means of interaction, we are essentially recreating that rule, and thus recreating the institution.

It's a popular notion that harsh punishment in prison should act as a deterrent to crime. The slogan "to be tough on crime" often extends to the conditions in prison. The evolution of punishment has included executions, corporal punishment, hard labor, and exile.
Despite the presence of harsh punishments since the last twenty years, there has been only a slight deterrent effect. Conversely, approaches to reduce recidivism through evidence-based practices and programs have succeeded.
It is important to understand the goals of punishment and how they relate to public opinion and prison philosophy within the context of what works according to recent research.
Public opinion often recommends harsh punishments and labor for inmates during their incarceration.
Evaluate the use of hard labor and even chain gangs and compare to the theories of criminal rehabilitation and the impact on society. For example, the governor of North Carolina has ordered the use of inmates to clean up public areas after Hurricane Irene in 2011.

Look for the quantitative and qualitative research available to you on the use of inmate labor in your state and one other state using the Argosy University online library resources and prepare a 2- to 3-page paper addressing the following:

This “Assignment 2” writing assignment is a comparative essay focused on topics encountered in our HUM 111 class. The project will be based on research but will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities as an organized, innovative, and critical thinker. If approached properly, it should also be fun!
Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that follows instructions and covers each part of the topic. (The title page and References list do not get included in this word count).
Note:
Your instructor may require you to submit your topic choice for approval before the end of Week 5.
For the topic you choose:
Establish a clear thesis about your topic as part of the introductory paragraph (often the thesis is the last thing one determines after doing the basic research and outline; however it will be placed in the first paragraph of your paper).
This is a comparative essay. Comparison approached properly will require some critical thinking on your part. Use a point-by-point approach for the essay. That means, if comparing subject A with subject B, don't do the first half of the essay on subject A and then the second half on subject B--that will seem like two (2) separate essays and comparisons will tend to get lost. Instead, you should be mentioning both subjects in most of your paragraphs as you compare them throughout the essay. Comparisons will identify similarities as well as contrasts.
Do not try to do everything on your two (2) subjects. You should end up narrowing your focus to a few insights and issues about the subjects being compared. And, from those fairly specific points of comparison, you will develop a thesis and glean some lessons.
Follow closely the instructions below for your specific topic.
Include a concluding paragraph at the end. This paragraph will, in some way, refer back to the thesis established in your first paragraph, since now you have demonstrated and supported it. It may be here that you also include your observations relating your study to the modern workplace or society (see your topic). Try to finish with flair!

Jeff broke up with his college girlfriend after graduation, and since then he has dated a few different women, but hasn’t had another serious relationship. Jeff wonders what the remainder of his 20’s and his 30’s will bring.
Based on your reading, prepare a PowerPoint presentation that would help individuals like Jeff set goals related to career, health, and family. The presentations should discuss the relationship between lifestyle choices and health risks. In addition, it should address how factors like personality and attachment may influence both career- and family-related goals. Finally, address diversity in the presentation. Explain how your plan could be adapted to fit the needs of different socioeconomic or ethnic groups.
Your PowerPoint presentation should include an introduction, a conclusion, and detailed speaker’s notes. Include your references on one slide.

Discussion 2 - Week 2 COLLAPSE Issue Posts: The discussion topic this week focuses on conceptual foundations of community psychology, with particular attention to ecological foundations and issues of power and injustice. Consider and respond to the following. Be sure to draw from and cite required readings as well as your own personal and professional experiences and other sources of knowledge. Issue Post Discussion #2 : Give an example of an injustice that concerns you. Describe the potential role of community psychology for addressing the injustice. Discuss the importance of commitment and accountability in addressing injustice at personal, relational, and collective levels. Issue main posts are due by Day 5. Review Nelson & Prilleltensky's (2010) guidelines for psychopolitical validity (Tables 6.1 & 6.2). Consider how your own personal experiences with power and injustice are likely to influence your sense of commitment and accountability to social change at collective, relational, and personal levels.
