Discussion 1: The North-South Gap This week, you were able to assume the roles of a foreign market analyst, a refugee, and an Ethiopian coffee farmer. Through each of these simulations, you were exposed to different aspects that are all related to “The North-South Gap.” Using the course text, your experiences in the simulations, and assigned resources, contrast and compare the differences in levels of development, protection of human rights, and environmental conditions between the Global North (Developed countries) and the Global South (Developing countries). Utilize the videos from Chapters 12, 13, & 14 as well as the News Review to support your argument. Your initial post should be at least 150 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Discussion 2: The Future of the Gap In Discussion 1, you discussed the North-South Gap as it exists in present day. During the discussion, you probably realized that creating fair and balanced international development, safeguarding human rights, and protecting the global environment are all major concerns most international leaders share today. As you have been learning from your papers throughout this course, there is always a need to look towards the future, and many disagreements exist over how to effectively tackle these impending challenges today and tomorrow. How should global leaders address these future concerns? Will the gaps widen or narrow? Select a scenario from the National Intelligence Council’s publication Global Trends 2030: Alternative Worlds and briefly discuss how international development, human rights, and the global environment will change, as postulated by the scenario you selected. Discuss positive and/or negative impacts to international development, human rights, and the global environment, and if the gaps between states will widen or close. Utilize specific examples from the News Review section as well as any videos from the course. Your initial post should be at least 150 words in length. INTRODUCTION
To write the Final Research Paper for this course, you must choose
one writing prompt and develop a position. Your thesis statement
forms the basis of your position and guides your argument to a
logical conclusion. The thesis statement will answer any
question(s) presented in the writing prompt in one to two clear
sentences.
In the body of the paper, you will examine issues that are relevant
to your thesis statement and use research to support your claims
about those issues. Each claim or assertion must be supported by
scholarly research in the form of summaries, paraphrased
information, or direct quotes from published, credible sources.
Each paragraph should address one topic that directly supports
your thesis statement.
Research is an analytical process, so you are expected to discuss multiple viewpoints and to present
research results in an impersonal manner. It is also important to remember that a persuasive essay
does not simply report information or summarize sources; it uses research to develop an
argument and/or prove a point.
At the end of your paper, you will need to provide a conclusion that features a closing argument, a
paper summary, and a rephrased thesis statement.
PROMPTS: ARTS, MEDIA, AND PHILOSOPHY
1. Should organized religious groups be allowed to act as political advocates or should they
focus only on the spiritual needs of people? Is it possible to strike a balance? Research all
sides of this debate and defend a single position in your persuasive essay.
2. The word “hero” is culturally-specific and is often applied to sports figures, celebrities, and
cultural icons. Define how the term is currently and most commonly used in mass media, and
decide if you agree or disagree with who is considered heroic. If you agree with its current
usage, explain to readers why you feel it is appropriately applied. If you disagree, make the
case for the people you would define as heroic and explain your reasoning.
3. In 2012, three of the top-grossing action films featured female heroes: The Hunger Games,

Writing Assignment
In the second major essay, you were asked to seek a modern social issue that interests you (perhaps
because of your major, a situation in your life, and/or other curiosity). Now that you have begun
researching that issue, you’re asked to identify a specific argument (typically done by finding a problem
to solve). Then, develop a solution (or at least a partial solution) to that problem and craft an argument
that convinces readers that your position on the issue is valid and workable. You may use information
and research from the rhetorical analysis assignment. Your argument must be related to your
professional or academic goals. These arguments need to be real and personal.
When you write to convince, you need to have
a specific purpose in mind,
a strong sense of your audience, and
an idea of what might be an effective way to convince that audience (rhetorical analysis)
In this essay, you need to take a stand on a controversial idea, issue, or practice and provide sufficient
evidence to support that stand, the goal being that your readers will consider changing their behaviors
or beliefs in order to solve a “problem.” Because argument asks for change, you cannot defend the
status quo (unless the status quo is being challenged.

We sail through the New York harbor passing a statue in which they call the statue of liberty standing tall as she is a symbol of strength reading “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”(Lazarus, n.d.). I could only hope this message was true but I also questioned myself if this was a true illustration of the America I would soon enter. Many of us “Germans” came on this journey to America to escape the civil unrest of Germany in hope to get away from having to live in poverty, oppression, and political danger. I needed a better job to provide for my family to offer the younger generation a better future. Arriving at Ellis Island I am filled with many thoughts and hopes, but as we enter I feel the mistrust and prejudice from the Americans. Writing Assignment
In the second major essay, you were asked to seek a modern social issue that interests you (perhaps
because of your major, a situation in your life, and/or other curiosity). Now that you have begun
researching that issue, you’re asked to identify a specific argument (typically done by finding a problem
to solve). Then, develop a solution (or at least a partial solution) to that problem and craft an argument
that convinces readers that your position on the issue is valid and workable. You may use information
and research from the rhetorical analysis assignment. Your argument must be related to your
professional or academic goals. These arguments need to be real and personal.
When you write to convince, you need to have
a specific purpose in mind,
a strong sense of your audience, and
an idea of what might be an effective way to convince that audience (rhetorical analysis)
In this essay, you need to take a stand on a controversial idea, issue, or practice and provide sufficient
evidence to support that stand, the goal being that your readers will consider changing their behaviors
or beliefs in order to solve a “problem.” Because argument asks for change, you cannot defend the
status quo (unless the status quo is being challenged.

Your relationship as a writer to your audience, your subject, your purpose, and your motivation

Self-taught William Kamkwamba has been feted by climate change campaigners like Al Gore and business leaders the world over.
His against-all-odds achievements are all the more remarkable considering he was forced to quit school aged 14 because his family could no longer afford the $80-a-year (£50) fees.
When he returned to his parents' small plot of farmland in the central Malawian village of Masitala, his future seemed limited.
But this was not another tale of African potential thwarted by poverty.
Defence Against Hunger
The teenager had a dream of bringing electricity and running water to his village.
And he was not prepared to wait for politicians or aid groups to do it for him. The need for action was even greater in 2002 following one of Malawi's worst droughts, which killed thousands of people and left his family on the brink of starvation.
Unable to attend school, he kept up his education by using a local library. Fascinated by science, his life changed one day when he picked up a tattered textbook and saw a picture of a windmill.
Mr Kamkwamba told the BBC News website: "I was very interested when I saw the windmill could make electricity and pump water.
"I thought: 'That could be a defence against hunger. Maybe I should build one for myself'. "
When not helping his family farm maize, he plugged away at his prototype, working by the light of a paraffin lamp in the evenings.
But his ingenious project met blank looks in his community of about 200 people.
"Many, including my mother, thought I was going crazy," he recalls. "They had never seen a windmill before. "

Neighbours were further perplexed at the youngster spending so much time scouring rubbish tips.
"People thought I was smoking marijuana," he said. "So I told them I was only making something for juju [magic]. ' Then they said: 'Ah, I see. '"
Mr Kamkwamba, who is now 22 years old, knocked together a turbine from spare bicycle parts, a tractor fan blade and an old shock absorber, and fashioned blades from plastic pipes, flattened by being held over a fire.
"I got a few electric shocks climbing that [windmill]," says Mr Kamkwamba, ruefully recalling his months of painstaking work.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
