The challenges involved with investigating crimes may well be characterized by a quote from Ludwig
Wittgenstein: "How hard I find it to see what is right in front of my eyes I" Investigating crimes has
indeed become a complicated art as well as a science, as will be seen in this chapter.
The art of sleuthing has long fascinated the American public. People appear to be completely enthralled
with anything involving forensics and criminal psychoses (e.g., CSL Dexter, Criminal Minds), as well
as the exploits of detectives as they pursue serial killers (e.g., Silence of the Lambs, Se7en) Nor is this
public interest in sleuthing a recent phenomenon: for decades, Americans have feasted on the exploits
of dozens of fictional masterminds and detectives in books and movies, such as Arthur Conan Doyle's
Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and Clint Eastwood's Detective
"Dirty Harry" Callahan, to name a few.
In reality, investigative work is largely misunderstood, often boring, and overrated; it results in arrests
only a fraction of the time; and it relies strongly on the assistance of witnesses and even some luck.
Nonetheless, the related fields of forensic science and criminalistics are the most rapidly developing

Law enforcement, particularly drug task force units, have relied on informants for years. The question is whether 4th amendment rights are violated when using informants because of their background and credibility. A search within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment has never been explicitly defined by the Supreme Court of the United States (Hadlow, 2017).
Because of this most of those warrants called into question are ruled on in state court. In State v. Simpson, the Tennessee Supreme Court set an unprecedented low threshold, making it likely that almost any informant tip, even a phantom tip, will establish an officer's cause to stop and possibly search an individual (Dunn, 1999). Informant tips need to be thoroughly scrutinized before acted upon to endure they will stand up in a court of law.
1 Corinthians 1:20 asks us " Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?' Using our knowledge of the world, investigators need to verify every piece of information that leads to a search warrant, especially if it is an informant.

Disloyalty is the word that is associated with informants most often. This is because of a deep seeded societal conflict of what trust and disloyalty is that was developed at a younger age. This issue is seen most times when someone comes forward to speak against someone in areas where crime is heavy, derogatory words such as snitch and rats are used to described the people. However, informants are highly necessary for police work and some believe that certain areas of crime if there were not any informants there would be an absolute halt in the work (Rich, 2012). Before speaking on the types of informants it must be made clear that officers need to know that they can trust the people that are offering information. Simple questions need to be asked within the officer’s head such as why they are coming, how it affects them, connections, motives etc. All of these have to be gathered indirectly due to the questions leading to discomfort and possible lies. Officers also have to remember that they are the ones in charge and that informants cannot call the shots (Osterburg, & Ward, 2014). With correct boundaries and the ability to correctly identify good informants a well worked system can lead to benefits within the enforcement agency.

Interrogation is described as the process of interviewing an individual or suspect to obtain valuable and reliable information from them. It can also be referred as questioning which is mainly employed by the intelligence agencies, military personnel, and law enforcement officers. The main aim of interrogation is to elicit beneficial and relevant information. Interrogation can also be a way of a question that can be systematically and formally. Also, examination usually involves an array of methods or techniques such as torture, mind-altering drugs, Reid technologies, pride-and-ego down, good cop/bad cop, suggestibility, and deception which ranges from developing of rapport with the focus to the outright torture. Therefore, the paper will discuss one technique of interrogation which is deception.
Part One
Individuals or suspect usually tend toile to obtain some pardon or favor during an interrogation or not to disclose valuable information that is needed because they are afraid they will get into trouble if they do so (DePaulo, et al. 2003). Therefore, the most common cues or indicators of deception in behavioral posturing and verbal responses that have the greatest validity include speech behaviors which can also be called para verbal behaviors such as the pitch of voice, response latency or wording (DePaulo, et al. 2003). The second indicator of deception is facial indicators such as smiling or eye contact, finally is the body movement such as leg circulation and gesture.
Hence there is three primary theoretical approach that usually answers the question as to why the nonverbal behavior of the liar usually gives them away. First is the emotional approach which is also called the effective approach. Most of the emotions which are associated with deception include excitement, fear and guild (Granhag and Vrij, 2005). For example, someone who is lying may be afraid of being caught later. Secondly, is the cognitive complexity approach which is where a liar needs to avoid contradiction and remember what they earlier said, to declare the same when they are asked to repeat. Finally, is the attempt control approach. I emphasizes that most lira is concerned with the fact that their lies may be detected by (Vrij, 2000). Here they will try so hard to make a compelling impression so that they are not caught. Hence the approaches suggest that presence of print management, content complexity and signs of emotions can be an indication of deceit by a person.
Furthermore, there are more reliable verbal indicators to the deception that one can use to see if someone is lying or not. These signs include speech patterns were one may notice frequent pauses, clearing the throat, stuttering and a higher pitch in their tone (Zuckerman, et al. 1981). Secondly, is repeating questions were a liar may repeat the question back to create time to think and formulate the answers to give instead of giving straight .

My working title proposal (pending this gets approved and I understood this correctly) is the following:
"An examination of who commits the crime of shoplifting and why."
The reason I chose this topic to explore is during my research, I came across a peer reviewed article that really focused on how retailers such as Wal-Mart, Aber-Crombie and Fitch, and many other retail chains use their own form of punishment for shoplifters by hiring private companies to punish shoplifters instead of turning the shoplifter over to the police. Basically, what happens is a shoplifter gets caught by the store, they get turned over to the private company instead of the police, and the private company receives a monetary payment in exchange for them not pressing charges against the individual. In the article, it continues to talk about the moral ethics of this form of "blackmail" and if this should even be condoned. It also goes into detail that retailers have started utilizing these private companies to extract their own form of punishment because it feels that many perpetrators do not actually get punished. "Most shoplifters evade detection and many who fail are never formally punished. For decades, retailers battling theft have relied on a mixture of law enforcement and self-help, sending some suspected shoplifters to the station house and others to the street. Recently, a third option has emerged, raising basic questions about the interplay between public and private forces in American criminal justice" (Rappaport, 2018, p. 2260).
With that said, I found myself thinking about the perpetrators of these crimes and what factors drove them to commit this crime. For example, what life situation or influence or whatever caused them to commit the crime of shoplifting. I essentially veered my thinking away from the main point of the article and just started focusing on the cause and effect of why the perpetrator committed the crime. Was it poor financial issues and tried to shoplift food just to eat? Or was it just that they really wanted new clothes and didn't want to spend the money on them? Or if it was new clothes, was it because they desperately needed it? All of these questions just started filling my brain and I began asking myself the "Who, what, when, where, and why" of what causes an individual to shoplift.
The article does mention this briefly in a paragraph but not much is done to explore this cause and effect relationship. It even specifically states that the cause is hard to determine. "It is difficult to determine, at any point in history, who is shoplifting and how much" (Rappaport, 2018, p. 2260).
I believe that by using different methods to explore what causes people to shoplift would help shed new light on the specific causes that lead to somebody shoplifting and possibly what methods could be used to help prevent it in the future.
I look forward to any recommendations or corrections .

The main aim of interrogation is to elicit beneficial and relevant information. Interrogation can also be a way of a question that can be systematically and formally. Also, examination usually involves an array of methods or techniques such as torture, mind-altering drugs, Reid technologies, pride-and-ego down, good cop/bad cop, suggestibility, and deception which ranges from developing of rapport with the focus to the outright torture. Therefore, the paper will discuss one technique of interrogation which is deception.
Part One
Individuals or suspect usually tend toile to obtain some pardon or favor during an interrogation or not to disclose valuable information that is needed because they are afraid they will get into trouble if they do so (DePaulo, et al. 2003). Therefore, the most common cues or indicators of deception in behavioral posturing and verbal responses that have the greatest validity include speech behaviors which can also be called para verbal behaviors such as the pitch of voice, response latency or wording (DePaulo, et al. 2003). The second indicator of deception is facial indicators such as smiling or eye contact, finally is the body movement such as leg circulation and gesture.
Hence there is three primary theoretical approach that usually answers the question as to why the nonverbal behavior of the liar usually gives them away. First is the emotional approach which is also called the effective approach. Most of the emotions which are associated with deception include excitement, fear and guild (Granhag and Vrij, 2005). For example, someone who is lying may be afraid of being caught later. Secondly, is the cognitive complexity approach which is where a liar needs to avoid contradiction and remember what they earlier said, to declare the same when they are asked to repeat. Finally, is the attempt control approach. I emphasizes that most lira is concerned with the fact that their lies may be detected by (Vrij, 2000). Here they will try so hard to make a compelling impression so that they are not caught. Hence the approaches suggest that presence of print management, content complexity and signs of emotions can be an indication of deceit by a person.
Furthermore, there are more reliable verbal indicators to the deception that one can use to see if someone is lying or not. These signs include speech patterns were one may notice frequent pauses, clearing the throat, stuttering and a higher pitch in their tone (Zuckerman, et al. 1981). Secondly, is repeating questions were a liar may repeat the question back to create time to think and formulate the answers to give instead of giving straight .

"An examination of who commits the crime of shoplifting and why."
The reason I chose this topic to explore is during my research, I came across a peer reviewed article that really focused on how retailers such as Wal-Mart, Aber-Crombie and Fitch, and many other retail chains use their own form of punishment for shoplifters by hiring private companies to punish shoplifters instead of turning the shoplifter over to the police. Basically, what happens is a shoplifter gets caught by the store, they get turned over to the private company instead of the police, and the private company receives a monetary payment in exchange for them not pressing charges against the individual. In the article, it continues to talk about the moral ethics of this form of "blackmail" and if this should even be condoned. It also goes into detail that retailers have started utilizing these private companies to extract their own form of punishment because it feels that many perpetrators do not actually get punished. "Most shoplifters evade detection and many who fail are never formally punished. For decades, retailers battling theft have relied on a mixture of law enforcement and self-help, sending some suspected shoplifters to the station house and others to the street. Recently, a third option has emerged, raising basic questions about the interplay between public and private forces in American criminal justice" (Rappaport, 2018, p. 2260).
With that said, I found myself thinking about the perpetrators of these crimes and what factors drove them to commit this crime. For example, what life situation or influence or whatever caused them to commit the crime of shoplifting. I essentially veered my thinking away from the main point of the article and just started focusing on the cause and effect of why the perpetrator committed the crime. Was it poor financial issues and tried to shoplift food just to eat? Or was it just that they really wanted new clothes and didn't want to spend the money on them? Or if it was new clothes, was it because they desperately needed it? All of these questions just started filling my brain and I began asking myself the "Who, what, when, where, and why" of what causes an individual to shoplift.
The article does mention this briefly in a paragraph but not much is done to explore this cause and effect relationship. It even specifically states that the cause is hard to determine. "It is difficult to determine, at any point in history, who is shoplifting and how much" (Rappaport, 2018, p. 2260).
I believe that by using different methods to explore what causes people to shoplift would help shed new light on the specific causes that lead to somebody shoplifting and possibly what methods could be used to help prevent it in the future.

There is a good chance that if you watch any national news broadcast, there is a good chance that there will be a mention of some sort of white collar crime. The three infamous white collar crimes that come to mind after reading this week’s lesson is that of Charles Ponzi (Ponzi Scheme), Kenneth Lay (ENRON) and John Rigas (Adelphia Communications). Albeit these cases are historical, they continue to effect current events and public opinions as it pertains to current case laws.
White collar, also known as corporate crime, as the name demonstrates, focuses around criminal acts pertaining to businesses. These wrongdoings normally include monetary value and different types of fraud. One of the biggest issues that face these types of crime is the loss of trust by the citizens when dealing with large corporations. An article that was published in Crime & Delinquency attempted to highlight a study of why white collar crime is committed by those in corporate positions. One of the theories pertained to the “fear of falling”. In other words, those that have worked hard and dedicated so much time to one’s success may violate laws for the fear of losing what they have worked for (Piquero, 2012). Case laws and sentencing guidelines are constantly being reviewed as it pertains to the sentencing of these white-collar crimes. In 2008, an article was published in the Wall Street Journal that discussed revising the current policies on punishments and how the Department of Justice and the United States Attorney’s Office handle these types of investigations. Some law makers felt that the DOJ and the USAO were to aggressive in pursuing criminal charges against companies (Perez, 2008). Regardless on the stance, public trust is paramount when it comes to investing and that is why it is imperative that these individuals that break the regulatory standards are held accountable and punishment should be swift and harsh.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and their Uniform Crime Reporting Data does not show the complete picture of frequency on white-collar crimes in the United States. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Criminal Information Services Division, the definition itself of a white-collar crime is contentiously debated. There are currently three placements for the term: white-collar crime defined by the type of offender, type of offense and organizational culture. Utilizing the traditional Summary Reporting System, the data would be incomplete due to the socioeconomic characteristics (Barnett, 2000).

Before discussing the specifics of conceptual and operational definitions of gang-related crime, it will be important to understand conceptual and operational definitions. According to Maxfield, M. G., & Babbie E. R. (2018), a research-based conceptual definition is a way to define a specific term so there will not be any confusion when the information is read. The conceptual definition leads to an operational definition. The operational definition outlines how the subject matter or issue will be measured. For the journalist in a news article, the conceptual and operational definitions have one goal. Allow the reader to understand the concept of what they are writing about in their article.
Anytime a journalist or a researcher is going to investigate a subject matter, it is essential to understand how to define the subject or issue. In this case, it is vital to have a conceptual or operational definition of what constitutes a gang. Esbesen et al. (2001) note that problems exist in defining what exactly comprises a gang. Researchers disagree on both conceptual and operational definitions of gangs, creating problems in formulating policies on how to deal with them. How gangs are defined lays the foundation for how the research will be conducted. For example, if the research definition is too narrow, it may eliminate gang crime from the research skewing the results. If the research definition is too broad, it may include crime that is not gang-related, skewing the results. It is critical to creating conceptual and operational definitions in order to capture the necessary data accurately. There can also be a difference between what constitutes a gang legally and journalistically or in research. For example, the Code of Virginia (2021), criminal code §18.2-46.1 defines a gang as;

Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Brenna
Brenna is an 18-year-old, heterosexual, African American female. She is pregnant, residing in a homeless shelter, and has no income source. Brenna was raised by her biological mother in a one-bedroom apartment in an urban neighborhood. When Brenna was 15 years old, her mother began dating a new man. This man sexually assaulted Brenna while they were home alone one evening. She immediately disclosed the sexual assault to her mother who called her a liar and told her to move out. Brenna then lived in a variety of situations, sometimes residing with friends for short periods and sometimes living in a youth shelter. During this period she attended high school intermittently but did not graduate.
After her 18th birthday, Brenna moved in with her boyfriend, Cameron. Also living in the household were Cameron’s mother, his 16-year-old sister, and a 7-year-old brother. Shortly after moving in with Cameron, Brenna became pregnant with his child. Prior to the pregnancy, Cameron would often abuse her physically, verbally, and emotionally. When Brenna announced the pregnancy, Cameron became even more violent, accused her of sleeping with other men, and denied paternity of the baby. When Brenna was 4 months pregnant, Cameron attempted to strangle her, so Brenna moved to a shelter. Although the shelter was willing to house Brenna and her newborn temporarily, their policy required Brenna to secure new living arrangements prior to giving birth.
I was assigned to be Brenna’s social work case manager at this shelter. Brenna and I worked together to set manageable goals during her stay at the shelter and also developed a plan for ongoing mental health support. Utilizing individual case manage- ment sessions, I worked with Brenna to prioritize goals regarding nancial stability, permanent housing, and medical care. Brenna had dif culty reading and writing, so we worked together to

G., & Babbie E. R. (2018), a research-based conceptual definition is a way to define a specific term so there will not be any confusion when the information is read. The conceptual definition leads to an operational definition. The operational definition outlines how the subject matter or issue will be measured. For the journalist in a news article, the conceptual and operational definitions have one goal. Allow the reader to understand the concept of what they are writing about in their article.
Anytime a journalist or a researcher is going to investigate a subject matter, it is essential to understand how to define the subject or issue. In this case, it is vital to have a conceptual or operational definition of what constitutes a gang. Esbesen et al. (2001) note that problems exist in defining what exactly comprises a gang. Researchers disagree on both conceptual and operational definitions of gangs, creating problems in formulating policies on how to deal with them. How gangs are defined lays the foundation for how the research will be conducted. For example, if the research definition is too narrow, it may eliminate gang crime from the research skewing the results. If the research definition is too broad, it may include crime that is not gang-related, skewing the results. It is critical to creating conceptual and operational definitions in order to capture the necessary data accurately. There can also be a difference between what constitutes a gang legally and journalistically or in research. For example, the Code of Virginia (2021), criminal code §18.2-46.1 defines a gang as;
“Criminal street gang” means any ongoing organization, association, or group of three or more persons, whether formal or informal, (i) which has as one of its primary objectives or activities the commission of one or more criminal activities; (ii) which has an identifiable name or identifying sign or symbol; and (iii) whose members individually or collectively have engaged in the commission of, attempt to commit, conspiracy to commit, or solicitation of two or more predicate criminal acts, at least one of which is an act of violence, provided such acts were not part of a common act or transaction.

Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Brenna
Brenna is an 18-year-old, heterosexual, African American female. She is pregnant, residing in a homeless shelter, and has no income source. Brenna was raised by her biological mother in a one-bedroom apartment in an urban neighborhood. When Brenna was 15 years old, her mother began dating a new man. This man sexually assaulted Brenna while they were home alone one evening. She immediately disclosed the sexual assault to her mother who called her a liar and told her to move out. Brenna then lived in a variety of situations, sometimes residing with friends for short periods and sometimes living in a youth shelter. During this period she attended high school intermittently but did not graduate.
After her 18th birthday, Brenna moved in with her boyfriend, Cameron. Also living in the household were Cameron’s mother, his 16-year-old sister, and a 7-year-old brother. Shortly after moving in with Cameron, Brenna became pregnant with his child. Prior to the pregnancy, Cameron would often abuse her physically, verbally, and emotionally. When Brenna announced the pregnancy, Cameron became even more violent, accused her of sleeping with other men, and denied paternity of the baby. When Brenna was 4 months pregnant, Cameron attempted to strangle her, so Brenna moved to a shelter. Although the shelter was willing to house Brenna and her newborn temporarily, their policy required Brenna to secure new living arrangements prior to giving birth.
I was assigned to be Brenna’s social work case manager at this shelter. Brenna and I worked together to set manageable goals during her stay at the shelter and also developed a plan for ongoing mental health support. Utilizing individual case manage- ment sessions, I worked with Brenna to prioritize goals regarding nancial stability, permanent housing, and medical care. Brenna had dif culty reading and writing, so we worked together to

Since ancient times, the idea of how people should govern has been a mainstay of philosophers and political theorists. One of the most enduring notions to emerge from early theorists is the basic belief that people are capable of governing themselves. The concept of democratic governance developed out of those early intellectual discussions. Democratic governance enjoys widespread acceptance in many parts of the world today. Yet, the exact meaning of democratic governance and how it should be implemented still remains a topic of debate. Democratic theory has evolved because of contributions from classical democratic theorists such as Aristotle, Plato, Rousseau, Locke, and Jefferson. It is important to consider of the ideas of these classical theorists when thinking about modern democratic theory.

The scholar of change video (program transcript) was presented by John Anner, a PhD candidate in Public Policy Administration (with concentration on International Non-governmental Organizations. – Walden University.
Over the years, Anner have been
focusing on agricultural problems in Africa and the Caribbean, and later joined the Peace Corps, where he worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in agriculture in Mauritania and West Africa.
Anner has been a
practitioner for almost 30 years and quest to acquire a PhD is to enable him add some intellectual and academic rigor to his work.
He hope to
bring to bear, his knowledge, experience and understanding to build national policy networks targeted at addressing directed social problems.
Coding the Scholar Change
A code in qualitative inquiry is most often a word or a short phrase that symbolically assigns a summative, a summary, a salient or essence-capturing attribute, for some portion of language, or visual data (
Saldana, 2016)
. My coding preference will be the use of the Excel spreadsheet with the labelling of the columns to include; the video code number (under this, I’ll have my notes), the name of the student, gender, program of study, subject matter/topic, what happened in the video (under this I’ll have my transcript which will capture my report content), quick memo.
To demonstrate the first coding, for instance, I’ll have the following; under the column for video code number (I’ll have video #3), the column for the name of the student (I’ll have

Explaining My Choice of Coding
Another attractive aspect of this qualitative coding system is the insertion of a column for
memos
. “Memos are a very important part of qualitative data analysis process because they offer a great platform to put very short notes which can be expanded and placed in in the researcher’s analytic memo notebook” (
Laureate Education - Producer, 2016). Again at periods of data analysis and reflections, a memo will enable the interviewer to
know what part of the text (or the questionnaire) the information came from and what the interviewer was thinking about at that period in time.

For the last half-century, the workforce in the United States has been undergoing tremendous demographic changes. For example, in 2009 women accounted for almost 48% of American workforce, compared to 37% in 1970 (Barsh & Yee, 2011). Additionally, workers under the age of 44, and those most likely to be in school, college, or professional training, are more ethnically and racially diverse than ever before (Policy Alert, 2005). This is only diversity of gender, race, and ethnicity; consider how managers today must also lead increasingly diverse teams in terms of age, experience, nationality, geographic location, and even diversity of thinking styles. Contemporary businesses draw employees from a more diverse pool of talent than ever before. To be successful, top managers must understand how to develop and lead diverse teams.
Managing a group composed of individuals with unique cultures, backgrounds, personalities, and abilities can be a daunting task. As a manager, it is your responsibility to ensure that team and group interactions are successful. As you review the Learning Resources this week to prepare for your Discussion posting, think about how you define diversity and diversity affects teams. Pay particular attention to the media resource, “Will Differences Doom the Team,” which presents some of the challenges managers face when leading a diverse team, and consider the key competencies managers must possess to effectively manage a diverse team. As you prepare for your post, consider what diversity means for you and how the diversity you have encountered in your professional experience have impacted how the team functions.

Income and wages are measurable indicators of how prosperity is distributed amongst social class. Wealth, often determined by an individual's net worth (assets minus liabilities), is another indicator that is used to determine class. Wealth for working class families is measured by their cars, savings, and home. As people improve their social and economic standing, wealth may include things like stocks and bonds, commercial real estate, and expensive jewelry.
Wealth is an important indicator because it spans past, present, and future generations. For example, compare the children of parents who can save money and leave an inheritance with children of parents who economically struggle and have few assets to pass on to the next generation. Historically, the creation and accumulation of wealth provides evidence of the legacy of racism, sexism, and discrimination and their role in determining class. Black/African Americans, women, and Hispanic/Latinos have historically been denied the means to obtain assets and grow wealth. Consider the impact of chronic marginalization on the Black/African American community's ability to build wealth. While the income gaps between various ethnic groups may be decreasing, the gap between assets remains wide. Data from the Pew Research center show that the median wealth of Caucasian households is 20 times that of Black/African American households and 18 times that of Hispanic/Latinos households in the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2011).
Class extends beyond wealth and other financial indicators. Class also includes details like the amount of free time you enjoy (because you are not working three jobs to make ends meet) or feeling like there is a "right" way to speak and act in order to be heard. For this Discussion, analyze how classism has impacted your life.
