Discovering York
– Easy Walk
A very leisurely stroll through the
cobbled streets of York approx. 3
miles long which you can complete
whilst stopping for shopping or
something to eat and explore the
splendour of York Minster. Stop to
visit the York Dungeon along the
route or alternatively the Jorvik
Centre and the Railway Museum are
detours you can make if you want to
make it a full days visit. Refer to the
map above if you stray off the route
of the walk.
Getting there
Either by train or car - for a relaxing
trip take the train from Middlesbrough
train station which stops at York
station and is cheap for a day return.
If travelling by car just follow the A19
through Thirsk and this will take you
directly into York. There is parking
just outside the main city at Marygate
which is the starting point of the walk
The Walk
Leave the car park
and walk into
Marygate. Turn left
and cross the road
and enter Museum
Gardens. Follow the
path by the
observatory and exit
by the lodge.
Route of the Discovering York walk
Turn left and then left again towards
the library. Go left and through a gate
alongside the library. Go up the steps
and through a gate in the wall. At the
bottom of the slope, turn right and
follow Abbey Wall into Exhibition
Square.
Cross at the traffic
lights and go through
Bootham Bar. A few
paces on your left
take a passageway
beside The Hole in
The Wall pub turn
right down Precentors
Court. By the Minster
go left through the
gate. Follow the path
left to the Minster
Library
Minster Library
Bend left through the gate and along
the road. Turn left by the postbox
down Chapter House Street, bending
right into Ogleforth. At the crossroads
turn right then go left through an
archway opposite The National Trust
Café.
Bear right into Bartle Garth which
bends left. At the T junction turn right
then left down Spen Lane. Opposite
Hilary House go right along St
Saviourgate. At the T junction turn
left then right at the crossroads. Next
to Jones shoe shop on your left take a
passage called Lady Peckitts Yard.
Go under the buildings then turn left
to Fossgate. Turn right and cross the
bridge. Turn right on Merchantgate.
At the T junction cross and take the
walkway beside the bridge, "Castle
Area" into the car park by Cliffords
Tower.
Bend right and go to the
right of the Hilton Hotel.
Just after the church on
your right, go left down
Friargate. Right along
Clifford Street and left by
the York Dungeon.

At the riverside turn right,
ascend the steps by Ouse
Bridge. Turn right and at the
traffic lights turn left by the
Spurriergate Centre. By Natwest
bank go right forking left into
Feasegate. Go ahead to cross
Parliament Street and pass St
Sampsons church.

Keep ahead at the crossroads into
Goodramgate. After about 50 yards
go left via a gateway into the Holy
Trinity churchyard, and exit by a
passage to the left of the tower, to
Low Petergate. Turn right and then
left into Grape Lane. Where it bends
left, turn right down the narrow
Coffee Yard into Stonegate.
Go left to St Helens Square, turn
right by Lloyds TSB. Keep ahead at
the crossroads back to Exhibition
Square. At the traffic lights turn left
up Bootham. Turn left down
Marygate by the circular tower back
to the car park.
