In Simple Words Discipline means
Teaching, Learning and Growing.
Discipline is the process of training a
worker so that he/she can develop self
control and can become more effective
in his/her work.
1. To obtain a willing acceptance of rules, regulations &
procedures of an organization so that organizational
goals may be attained.
2. To impart an element of certainty despite several
differences in informal behaviors pattern and other
related changes in an organization.
3. To develop among employees a spirit of tolerance and a
desire to make adjustments.
1. SELF DISCIPLINE
2. ENFORCED DISCIPLINE
All employees should have
adequate self control and
should be self directed in their
pursuit of organizational goals
that is known as self discipline.
If people in authority enforced a
law or a rule, they make sure that
it is obeyed, usually by punishing
people who do not obey it.
1. Respected by others: Discipline helps
command respect from others. Many people
struggle to gain respect from others in the
workplace. But the easiest way to get respect
is to be disciplined. People around and also
the sub-ordinates respect a person who is
disciplined.
2. Stay healthy: Disciplined life includes
regular habits like taking food, having a bath,
exercise, walking and sleeping at right time.
Exercise and other regular habits will tune the
body and mind so well that always the person
remains healthy. Even in case of a chronic
disease taking medicines at a regular time
helps get well soon. Having food in time is
very important because even food is also a
medicine.
3. Self-control: A person with self-discipline
has more self-control over himself. He is
careful in his use of words while talking, his
behavior etc. avoiding himself from being
entangled in silly problems. This way he also
builds good relations with people.
4. Have more time in a day: A disciplined
person have more time in a day than an
undisciplined person. So more time means
there is more chance to do extra works or
other pending works. We can overcome
procrastination and laziness in work.
The chief disadvantage of positive discipline is that it isn't appropriate in all
situations. For example, if an employee commits a serious infraction, such as
physically attacking a colleague, it’s not appropriate to focus on amplifying the
positive aspects of his behavior or resolving the core reasons for the dispute. In this
case, the employee’s infraction is serious enough that positive discipline alone is
insufficient and perhaps even irresponsible.
When positive discipline doesn't work, use the second layer -- negative discipline,
such as punishment or warnings. If these initial steps fail to resolve the problem,
suspension and firing should follow. The disadvantage of negative discipline is that
it creates a culture of fear and apprehension, which lowers worker morale and
inhibits employee growth. Using negative discipline to punish employees for poor
performance is not as effective as helping them identify their weaknesses and explore
how to improve upon their strengths.
