Discipline refers to training workers to develop self-control and be more effective. There are two types of discipline: self-discipline, where employees are self-directed to achieve organizational goals, and enforced discipline, where rules are enforced through punishment. Discipline helps people gain respect from others, stay healthy by developing regular habits, build self-control and make better use of time. However, positive discipline alone is not always appropriate, such as for serious infractions, and may need to be supplemented with negative discipline like punishments or warnings, and in severe cases, suspension or firing. Negative discipline risks creating a culture of fear that lowers morale and inhibits growth.
