Direct & Indirect
Speech
Introduction
As a Speaker of English you should have two
different ways of reporting the words of another
person: through a direct quote or indirect quote,
otherwise known as direct speech and indirect
speech.
Direct Speech
Direct speech is the reporting of the exact words that
someone else has spoken. Put differently, it is the actual
words or the quote of a speaker or writer’s words or
sentences. When we write such words or sentences, we
enclose or set off the quoted words in quotation marks
or inverted commas. This means that there is no
addition or subtraction in the original words of the
speaker.
Direct Speech
Example: “I shall probably go to Lapai next week”, said the
lecturer.
In the example above, the inverted commas are used to
enclose the actual word spoken by the lecturer followed by a
comma. The sentence is therefore a direct speech. It is easy
to recognize direct speech in a written passage because the
actual spoken words are enclosed in inverted commas.
Rule #1
After the subject (speaker) and the verb, put a comma.
Example:
• She said, ‘‘I'll be there at 5 o'clock.’’
• The teacher announced, "The exam has been
postponed until next week."
Rules of Direct
Speech
Rule #2
Put quotation marks before you start writing the first word
of the quoted speech.
Example:
• She said, ‘‘I'll be there at 5 o'clock.’’
Rules of Direct
Speech
Rule #3
Write in capital letters the first letter of the first word of
the quoted speech.
Example:
• She said, ‘‘I'll be there at 5 o'clock.’’
Rules of Direct
Speech
Rule #4
Put the appropriate punctuation marks at the end of the
speech, e.g. a full stop, a question mark, or an exclamation
mark.
Example:
• She said, ‘‘I'll be there at 5 o'clock.’’
Rules of Direct
Speech
Rule #5
Finally, close the speech with quotation marks.
Example:
• She said, ‘‘I'll be there at 5 o'clock.’’
Rules of Direct
Speech
Indirect Speech
Indirect speech involves paraphrasing a conversation or
speech to convey the original meaning as closely as
possible without quoting the speaker's exact words.
This secondhand reporting method requires changes in
sentence structure, such as adjusting pronouns and
verb tenses, and does not use quotation marks. It aims
to present the essence of what was said rather than the
precise wording.
Indirect Speech
Thus, our sentence above will become:
• The lecturer said that he would probably go to Lapai the
following week.
• The cashier said that he could work 24 hours.
• Ms. Ana said that she was the former president of that
company.
• My mother told me that I should finish my homework today.
• Mr. Ruiz said that he might be an Engineer if his parents had
enough money to send him to the College of Engineering.
Rule #1
After mentioning the speaker (subject) and the verb, the
reported speech is introduced with the conjunction 'that'
where appropriate.
Rules of Indirect
Speech
Rule #2
Make sure that you do not distort or alter the speaker's spee
or intended meaning.
Rule #3
If you summarize the message, which is sometimes necessary,
try to avoid distortion and misplacement of remarks.
Rules of Indirect
Speech
Rule #4
Take care not to add to a speaker's or subtract from it.
Share your insights about
the significance of direct
and indirect speech in
communication.
Application
The students will read the passage silently. After
reading, the teacher will ask comprehension questions
about the passage. After it, the students will be
grouped into two. They are going to rewrite the
passage into direct and indirect speech. Group 1 will
convert the 1st half of the passage into indirect speech
and Group 2 will convert the 2nd half of the passage
into direct speech.
1. Why was John late, and how did he feel when he
arrived?
2. What concern did Sarah express when John
arrived, and what was his response?
3. Why couldn't John call Sarah to inform her about
the delay?
4. How did Sarah try to improve the mood after John
arrived home, and how did she later explain the
situation to their friends?
Questions
Present your peer critiques about your
group's output. After providing the critiques,
each group will share their overall insights
on the activity. Ensure your feedback is
constructive, highlighting both strengths
and areas for improvement.
Assessment
Assessment
Read each question carefully and determine
whether it is in direct speech or indirect
speech. Write "Direct" or "Indirect" next to
each sentence to indicate your choice. Write it
on a one whole sheet of paper and submit it
next meeting.
