Presentation at #DIGITEC16 conference session on Open Source Software (#OSS) for European Institutions about economic and political value of Open Source / Free Software for Europe (https://europa.eu/digitec/speaker/georggreve).
This document discusses ways for Europe to reinvent itself through innovation by addressing new challenges and adopting new approaches. It argues that Europe needs to broaden its concept of innovation, invest in future infrastructure, use innovative financing models, and create new spaces for collaboration. Young innovative firms are seen as vital for growth and job creation. The document advocates combining digital and social agendas, using public procurement to boost innovation, and mobilizing private savings for social solutions through impact funds and social bonds. It also suggests learning from global examples of open innovation and bringing diverse groups together for collective impact.
The document discusses the Horizon 2020 program's approach to inclusive, innovative, and reflective societies. It outlines funding for social sciences and humanities, especially through Societal Challenge 6, which focuses on inclusive societies, innovative societies, and reflective societies. It summarizes projects funded in 2014 and topics to be evaluated in 2015, including overcoming crises, cultural heritage, policies and perceptions of Europe, and innovation ecosystems. The document advocates for coherence with EU policies and embedding social sciences across Horizon 2020.
Human Technopole is a proposed new research center in Milan, Italy that aims to:
1) Lead Italy to co-leadership in improving quality of life by ensuring better living conditions through scientific and technological developments.
2) Combine research excellence with strengthening Italy's healthcare industry to avoid "orphan" research.
3) Serve as a hub that strengthens Italy's existing university and research networks through interdisciplinary collaboration on topics like nutrition, sustainability, and ethics.
The document discusses strategies for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Europe by 2030. It emphasizes using the SDGs as a guiding strategy and template to unify ambitions across the EU and its member states. It also stresses the importance of backcasting, generating a desirable future vision and working backwards to identify pathways, milestones, and policies needed to achieve that vision. Additional topics covered include defining Europe's fair share of global responsibilities, mainstreaming sustainability through financing and governance, and enhancing public awareness and engagement with the SDGs.
This document provides an introduction and overview of the State of European Tech 2017 report by Atomico and Slush. It discusses the goals of building a rich narrative of the evolving European tech sector based on multiple data sources and perspectives. Key findings are that 2017 is the strongest year yet for European tech, with deep tech expertise, geographic diversity, and collaborative approaches. Solid foundations like talent, ambitious founders, and growing investor bases mean Europe is defining its own path. The probability of the next major company coming from Europe is higher than ever. The report aims to be the most comprehensive data-driven story of European tech.

OA 2013 - A Broader Vision of Open Access for Development Eve Gray
A paper delivered at the UNISA Open Access Seminar, 23 October 2013.
The paper argues that in a developing world context, and particularly in Africa, the narrow focus of conventional OA arguments on journal articles and an emphasis on the impact factor has been counterproductive. A wider approach, incorporating transformative uses of scholarly outputs for policy development and teaching and learning would be more appropriate.

Open Science new strategies need new science structures to be developed. We call it: open labs, new research and innovation environments based on a synthesis of current structures (academic research groups, companies, civic organitzations, public bodies,...). These open labs are currently emerging as living labs, fablabs, citizen labs, xlabs....
Until now new technologies have connected old economic, social, political structures. Nevertheless new structures are emerging.
This document discusses the challenges facing Europe and the potential for a socio-ecological transition. It outlines several problems Europe faces like youth unemployment, an aging population, and competitiveness issues. It also discusses global challenges like resource scarcity, climate change, and economic shifts. The document argues research, innovation, and intangible assets can help drive a transition to a greener economy. It suggests Europeans embrace new values like sustainability, access over ownership, and balance between science and society. Overall the document calls for Europe to move from a consumption focused society to a circular economy with more emphasis on preserving resources.
This document outlines Andreas Tschas's work building the Pioneers startup ecosystem. It discusses how the Central and Eastern European startup ecosystem has improved from 2009 to 2016, with more funding, talent, and understanding from government and education. Pioneers has grown from an event with 40 people in 2009 to a global organization in 2015 connecting thousands of entrepreneurs, investors, corporations and experts through events, programs and ventures. The Pioneers500 program identifies the most promising early-stage startups, and Pioneers is expanding its events and programs to more regions including Tokyo.

Abstract: "The data- and software-driven economy has fundamentally affected the distribution of economic power, and Information Technology (IT) is one of the most rapidly growing economic sectors. IT has become the life blood of the economy with an importance approaching that of currency itself. Control of this new currency is essential to sovereignty. In his talk Mr. Greve will show how Open Source provides the most sustainable and achievable path towards achieving that control through its enormous potential for innovation and facilitation of local economic growth. Sharing some of his expertise in the field, Mr. Greve will also provide concrete ways forward for possible EU and member state activities."

A Guide to AI for Smarter Nonprofits - Dr. Cori Faklaris, UNC CharlotteCori Faklaris
Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.
