Digital technologies can help solve problems in smart cities. We should start by identifying the most impactful problems to address, such as those affecting many people or requiring collaboration across agencies. Emerging trends like urbanization, climate change, and technology advances will shape the future, so we must consider them. Promising technologies include IoT, AI, and 5G networks. Other cities are developing 3D maps and data platforms to capture, transmit, store, analyze and share urban data. To best leverage these opportunities, we should focus on the full data continuum - from generating and collecting data to analyzing and applying insights - and use strategic foresight to plan smart city initiatives.
