Low-income students face several barriers in accessing financial aid for college. They are less likely to grow up in an environment that promotes higher education and often lack reliable internet access needed to complete financial aid forms online. Completing the lengthy FAFSA form can also be difficult without sufficient guidance. As a result, many low-income students who could qualify for aid miss out on opportunities because they are unaware of necessary follow-up steps or unable to navigate the financial aid process in time to pay tuition costs. Closing the digital divide will require providing more resources to guide low-income students through each stage of applying for financial assistance.

Digital divide
- 1. Digital Divide Barriers facing low income students
- 2. Cultural Barriers Some students (high-middle income) are exposed to a pro-college culture, this is where they have college enhancing tools accessible to them. Whereas other students (low income) did not have college accessible tools offered to them, thus they do not receive the same opportunities.
- 3. Internet Connectivity Access In areas where there is more better connectivity access to the internet it is easier to access different financial aid sites and their e-mail account to receive financial aid help. Where areas that there is limited connectivity access the pages can freeze up and make it harder to complete the financial aid form, also not being able to access their e-mail accounts poses a problem for receiving access to financial aid information.
- 4. Completing the FAFSA Students reported that completing the FAFSA online was often lengthy and difficult. Students (higher income) who don’t have a complete it don’t have a problem worrying about how to pay for schooling. Where students (lower income) who need to complete the FAFSA in order to have money to attend school often have trouble completing it correctly in time and are not given enough help or clearly explained resources.
- 5. Following Up on FAFSA Most students who didn’t have the resources available to them did not know that they needed to follow up on the Financial Aid process. Therefore it was harder to obtain some or full financial aid by the time they need to pay for tuition for college.
- 6. How to Improve Access By being aware of these steps we can hope to provide more and better resources for low income students that are applying for FAFSA to try and bridge this digital divide.
