The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated the growth of e-commerce. About $105 billion was added to US e-commerce sales in 2020 due to the pandemic. Lockdowns and concerns about the virus led to changed consumer behavior, with many shopping online instead of in stores. Online retail sales grew 32.4% in 2020 compared to the previous year and by 39% in the first quarter of 2021. The pandemic forced retailers to adapt quickly to rising online demand and changing consumer needs. Amazon in particular saw enormous growth during this period, with its sales rising 44% and profits increasing over 220% compared to 2019.
