Deeson Solutions Architect Steve Coppin-Smith focuses on scrum in an agency environment. In his talk he explaines what scrum is, why is it relevant to web development, and how can it help coders.
Presented during a webinar with Discuss Agile, August 9, 2018.
I’ve met many ScrumMasters. Some of them have been full time dedicated ScrumMasters, but far from all.
In this webinar we will discuss the benefits of having a full time and dedicated ScrumMaster, and the challenges getting there.
When you register, we encourage you to list your ideas of why it is good to have a full time dedicated scrum master and the challenges you have faced.
We will also reveal and discuss an often forgotten responsibility of a ScrumMaster. Which, if addressed, may help the development team and the rest of the organization dramatically.

Scrum Master Lessons from my 4 Year Old SonRyan Ripley
At a recent cookout, my 4 year old son, Dawson, ran for the back yard and easily joined a game of hide and seek. Watching this unfold, I realized that these kids are naturally agile. They got straight to playing (the value) and didn’t need a lot of ceremony to get there. They kids all did a quick hello, told Dawson what game they were playing, and invited him to join in (daily scrum). Then they played.
He and his friends self-organize, self-manage, and solve problems on the fly. They naturally exhibit the agile values and scrum practices that many adults struggle with daily.
For example, most parents have been bombarded with an unending stream of “Why’s?” from their child. Why does this work? Why did that happen? Why? Why? Why? While this line of questioning can be stressing, it is also invaluable to finding the root cause of an issue. Scrum teams use this approach – called The 5-Why’s – to get past technical issues and down to interpersonal issues that could be hindering the team.
This session is a fun discussion about the behaviors I’ve noticed in my son and how they translate to important lessons that all scrum master need to learn to better serve their teams.

Agile software development has proven to be more successful than traditional methods. However there are many Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, Lean, XP). It is difficult to make a right choice.
Do you want to know the differences between Scrum and Lean? Perhaps you struggle with your existing Scrum implementation and looking for a better methodology. So did I. I spent many hours looking for continuous improvement beyond Retrospectives and Sprint Reviews. And I found my answer in applying Lean Principles.
This session will help you to increase your understanding of Lean and Scrum. It will also give you some practical examples of implementing Lean in Scrum teams.

Lean Scaling – From Lean Startup to Lean Enterprise - Itamar GoldminzAtlassian
Congratulations! You've found the right product-market fit, and it's now time to scale your business. But growing your organization often means slower decision making, increased complexity, and higher chance for misalignments. How can you grow your business while staying lean? Learn five key lessons on how to use smart integration and process to grow with your Atlassian tools.
Scrum is simple. It has 11 elements. 5 Events, 3 Roles and 3 Artifacts. But even though Scrum is simple, it is hard. Hard to do right. Daily scrum’s only on Tuesdays? A Sprint Demo? The team asking for approval from their Product Owner at Sprint Review… These are only a few of the ways scrum can get corrupted. Let’s scan out collective Scrum hard dive and run chkdks /f on it to get rid of some of the bad sectors, rebuild some of the indexes and resolve the lost files.
A good anti-pattern has 2 elements:
1. A repeated pattern of action that appears beneficial, but ultimately produces more bad consequences than beneficial results.
2. A refactored solution exists that has been proven in actual practice and is repeatable.
So, what are common pitfalls that new (or even experienced) agile practitioners fall into? Learning about and watching out for these anti-patterns is a great way to inspect and adapt your agile practice.

Like a marriage or partnership, an agency should become an extension of the client's marketing department and be viewed as part of the team as opposed to a vendor or supplier.
In order for a relationship like this to develop and flourish, both parties need to share similar values and ethics while trusting and enjoying the interactions among the individuals from each organization.

Beyond the Crystal Ball –The Agile PMO - Heather Fleming and Justin RiservatoAtlassian
Perhaps we've set our project management officers (PMOs) up for failure. Without knowing it, we ask them to predict the future using a one-size-fits-all approach to best practices – and that just doesn't work. There is no magic crystal ball! This is a version of the presentationI delivered last year to the MIH Tech Conference in Prague.
About 2 years after the introduction of Scrum to 24.com I take a look at some of the things we've learned, in particular how to manage innovation in a Scrum environment, and how to use Scrum techniques in non-Scrum teams
Agile is a software development methodology in which the development is carried out iteratively and the requirements evolve through continuous inspection and adaptation. Some of the most commonly used agile software development methods/frameworks are: Adaptive Software Development (ASD), Extreme Programming (XP), Scrum and Kanban.
Naar aanleiding van vele vragen over Scrum van collega's is er een themalunch geweest. Inhoud:
* rollen en ceremonies
* Scrum values
* welke rol speel je als docent
* verschil tussen Scrum voor softwareontwikkeling en Scrum voor onderwijs (eduScrum)
The way a development team operates has a huge impact on what it achieves. The methodologies used, practices, cross-functionality within the team, and communication styles, all have a definite impact on building the foundations of the team and the successful execution of a project. From estimations, resource management, managing project costs, keeping track of tickets on different boards, encouraging faster and smoother communication, adapting to change requests and everything else that it entails, every development team struggles to keep everything on track. And to be honest, no methodology seems to fit right and at times, we are left to wonder, do these methods actually make an impact? You find yourself busy with making estimations that don't match, reports that are far different from the forecast, you see your team moving tickets without a proper understanding of the end goal of the product, and trying to keep a clear line of communication within the team and with the client. Have you been frantically searching for a method that collects the pros from different methodologies and empowers the team to execute a project faster and better without losing sight of the business aspect of the product? Join and discover.
The Role of a BA on a Scrum Team IIBA Presentation 2010scrummasternz
What is your role as a BA on a Scrum team? How do you fit in? This presentation was given to the IIBA conference in NZ in 2010 by Stephen Reed. Stephen had worked extensively as a BA and moved into using Scrum with multiple teams at a large Insurance company. This experience led to a lot of questions around what the BA should be doing on a Scrum team. This presentation goes some way to listing what worked in the teams Stephen was involved in. The BA role does not change and all the skills of a great BA are necessary still on a great Software Development team, just more focused on being a team member and utilising those skills for the Scrum process of getting working software to the customer with more focus and clarity for the user.
Cosa abbiamo scoperto in questi 20 anni?
Tech and Homelessness - Introducing The Hope HubLizzie Hodgson
On June 6, MPs, councillors, tech experts, charities and businesses came together to hear young people's ideas on how tech can help with homelessness.
The main thrust of the evening was to discuss the question: "How can tech help the homeless in Brighton and Hove?"
The purpose of the event was to bring as many stakeholders/orgs who work within homelessness and housing in Brighton and Hove together with a view to explore ways in which we can ignite better collaborations between diverse, but relevant agencies.
It was inspired by The Hope Hub concept, developed by two young people - Varun Mahatme (aged 15) and Christian Ebsworth (aged 17) at a previous ThinkNation event.
CHECK OUT THE TRANSCRIPT OF THEIR PRESENTATION HERE:
Students Caitlan Cassidy, Suad Omar, Ebrima Drammeh and Joanna Lahdenpera focused on an AI algorithm that would predict mold and condensation build up in a property and alert landlords/council/owners to the issue via an app, plus monitor rates at which problem is fixed with open source, forcing landlords to respond faster, improve living conditions and decrease health-related issues, so taking burden off GPs, hospitals etc especially for vulnerable people.
ThinkNation Brighton Digital Festival: On Saturday 13th October, 27 young people from diverse backgrounds came together from across the region, and Sweden, to explore how technology can help with housing, homelessness, mental health, and beach pollution.
In July 2017 the equivalent of 20 Land Rovers of rubbish was dumped on Brighton beach. How do we incentivize people to recycle and pick up litter? Students Ahmet Besmi, Dileep Dhol, Louis Dutch, Laren Mumford, Kirsten Jarkynai Bolotbek and Katie Vandervelden created a vending machine method!
ThinkNation Brighton Digital Festival: On Saturday 13th October, 27 young people from diverse backgrounds came together from across the region, and Sweden, to explore how technology can help with housing, homelessness, mental health, and beach pollution.
In this presentation, students Varun Mahatme, Christian Ebsworth, Rosie Dupont, Abubakar Mohamud and Katrin Gronfeldt created the Hope Hub: Tackling homelessness. At the Hope Hub, people can build an Uber-style rating system and earn credits and vouchers. No address is needed. The key issue is connections as a support network is required.
ThinkNation Brighton Digital Festival: On Saturday 13th October, 27 young people from diverse backgrounds came together from across the region, and Sweden, to explore how technology can help with housing, homelessness, mental health, and beach pollution.

ThinkNation Brighton Digital Festival: On Saturday 13th October, 27 young people from diverse backgrounds came together from across the region, and Sweden, to explore how technology can help with housing, homelessness, mental health and beach pollution.
In this presentation, students Giulia Tranquillini, Oliver Tucker, Matilda Oldenmark and Hedda Nilson created a city-wide app encouraging social and physical interaction and utilizing gaming techniques.
ThinkNation: "Women quotas in tech" Naomi Trickey, BrandwatchLizzie Hodgson
Naomi Trickey is Chief People Officer at Brandwatch - the world's leading social intelligence company used by over 1,200 brands and agencies, including Cisco, Whole Foods, Whirlpool, British Airways, Sony Music, and Dell. In her talk Naomi explored the complexity of gender equality and why 'blunt instruments' won't necessarily help.
ThinkNation: "Women quotas in tech" Olivia Thorne RobogalsLizzie Hodgson
From the perspective of a young person in the community, this talk discusses the 'against-quotas' viewpoint and aims to consider other routes to increase diversity in technology. The presentation goes through the social and personal implications associated with quotas, and proposes other solutions which involve both industry and individuals; drawing on personal experiences within Robogals to Olivia explores what truly engages girls in tech.
ThinkNation: "Women quotas in tech" Meri Williams from Chromerose and M&S Dig...Lizzie Hodgson
Diversity isn’t just about the numbers. Though it’s been clearly shown that organisations with better gender representation outperform the competition, somehow this isn’t enough of a “carrot”. Do we need the “stick” of quotas, as has been somewhat successful in the Nordics? How do we build our organisations to be inclusive, so we don’t just place a meat grinder at the end of the pipeline? Meri’s talk looks at these questions and more.
I was recently asked to deliver a 'provocation' on what I thought the next 10 years in tech, culture and education offered. This is a slight development from that talk - highlighting the top-line challenges we all face as we hurtle down our brave new tech-enabled world...
If you love something let it go (or how to manage your inner founder mentality)Lizzie Hodgson
I gave a talk this eve at Digibury - a tech, art, creative MeetUp at The Gulbenkian, Kent. I used to run Digibury, but this time was back sharing my experience of how I set up ThinkNation. And how I have learnt to manage my inner founder mentality. Oh, I also fully appreciate speaker nerves now.
Hosted by Rick Edwards (ITV, BBC, C4, E4) ThinkNation brings together young people, thought leaders and artists to tackle five big questions on how tech is impacting everyday life and shaping the future.
Digibury June 2015: Howard griffin - the future of architectural visualisation Lizzie Hodgson
The technology of Virtual Reality has developed enormously over the past 2-3 years. VR headsets offer users an increasingly immersive experience. The Kent School of Architecture are using this technology to develop new ways in which we experience new buildings long before they are built. In his update talk from Digibury Weekender in October 2014, Howard Griffin, programme director of the course, demonstrated the work his students are doing and ways in which they aim to push it further.
These guys last unleashed their digital creations on the Digibury crowd back in the summer of 2013. This time, Genetic Moo took us through their latest interactive art event that uses Kinect + Processing code, focusing on a fantastic voyage inside the body. By converting Limbo Arts Space in Margate into an interactive film set, they have created a series of interactive artworks where the body takes on the role of a human immune cell or an invading bacteria. During their talk, they encouraged audience members to experience 'being' a horse fly, crush infected cells and even dance with swirling plasma...

Designer (and dedicated tea drinker) Hannah delivers a caffeinated introduction to design: Pair fonts like a pro, grid like a thug and colour like there's no damn tomorrow. Grrrrr.
Digibury April 2015 Rachael Case: Embrace the Fear!Lizzie Hodgson
The transition from print to web design can, for many designers, be a daunting prospect. Drawing on her experience, Deeson designer Rachael turns this fear on its head. Rachel highlights how understanding HTML and CSS, coupled with established print design disciplines and foundations, can help create well-rounded, relevant designers, fit for the digital age.
Digibury March 11 - Mike Jongbloet: Great Kick off MeetingsLizzie Hodgson
Too often digital projects get off to the worst possible start with a poorly written brief and a lack of early collaboration. Deeson UX designer Mike Jongbloet explained how an engaging kick-off workshop can lead to amazing digital experiences. His talk came complete with practical tips for you to put into action on your next project.
Digibury: 6-2 Design - why open source is good for us allLizzie Hodgson
Aaron Taylor, founder of the Kent-based 6-2 Design digital agency, explores a wider view on why open source is good in a professional environment. From customisation and freedom (no vendor lock in) to cost, security, support and - crucially - the power of the community. He also discusses why contributing to open source in a professional environment benefits individuals, teams and their businesses.
Digibury: SciVisum - Making your website fast - and scalableLizzie Hodgson
Deri Jones is a renowned speaker and thought-leader in the Web performance arena. GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

your goals and deliver early versions you can
test with real users.
Pitching Scrum
Sounds great!
24. Estimate variance was high
Estimated solution lived in
one person’s head
Team felt duped by
inaccurate estimates
Let’s say, hypothetically,
there was one person
estimating
Estimate variance reduced
Requirement is better
understood
Team co-owns the estimate
But it’s ok, because they
replaced it with Planning
Poker!
Best supporting Scrum
practice in an agency
environment
