Active transport moves proteins and ions against their concentration gradients using energy from ATP. There are three main types: ion pumps directly move ions using ATP, co-transport couples the movement of one ion to the movement of another, and endocytosis involves engulfing material from outside the cell. Passive transport involves diffusion of molecules down their concentration gradients through the cell membrane without energy input. Both active and passive transport are required to move molecules in and out of cells and throughout the body.
