Muhammed Sabith analyzed several Facebook groups for Malayalee communities living overseas. He found that most groups were used primarily for sharing information about events and gatherings rather than engaging in "serious discussions". This was partly because the community members have diverse backgrounds and education levels, and many overseas workers have limited free time and internet access. However, one group for Malayalee students living in the same city had more in-depth discussions, likely because the members were more homogeneous and could easily meet in person.

 It is so partly because of the divergence of the
members. E.g.: a large section of the Gulf
Keralites do not have education beyond
primary level. They are unaware of virtual
public spheres though they have „account‟ in it.
 Also, many of them are not living in conditions
in which they have free and unrestricted access
to the net.
