                   TITLE
“THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC FOR CHILDREN IN THE
        FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING”
Songs and Rhymes provide relaxation and variety, but we
 have to be careful because an excessive use of them can
               make children to get bored.




Taking this fact into account, we can say that songs are a
 good resource to teach vocabulary, practice the language
 orally, improve pronunciation and intonation and also help
   children to know the culture of the foreign language.
Many of us know how quick students are at learning
songs. For a variety of reasons, songs stick in our minds
          and become part of us for example:




                A-B-C-D-E-F-G
            H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P
                Q - R - S - T - U and V,
                    W - X - Y and Z
             Now I know my A - B - C's
          Next time won't you sing with me?
It is easier to sing a language than to speak it.
   Music is around us: radio, television, theatre, etc.
     Songs work in our short and long-term memory.
Songs use simple, conversational language and repetitions.
             Children enjoy hearing themselves
                 Songs are relaxing, fun, etc.
For language teachers, songs are short, repetitive, and easily
                    to handle in a lesson.
Songs provide a link with home and school life, help children
 to develop positive attitude towards language learning and
         they reinforce lexical items and structures.
Old MacDonald had a farm,
            Ee i ee i oh!
And on his farm he had some chicks,
            Ee i ee i oh!
     With a cluck-cluck here,
     And a cluck-cluck there
   Here a cluck, there a cluck,
     Everywhere a cluck-cluck
   Old MacDonald had a farm

           Ee i ee i oh!
      With a moo-moo here,
      And a moo-moo there

Besides we cannot forget their important role in
        pronunciation, intonation and rhythm.
We have got many reasons to use songs in the classroom:

                        Motivation
Songs easily motivate children to use the foreign language.
Change in the routine
Cultural importance
Songs reflect the foreign culture
Reinforcement
They provide a meaningful way to repeat different items
           in order to reinforce the learning
      (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, etc.).
It is essential to select carefully the songs we are going to
                      work with in class.

                       A song of joy



     Come sing a song of joy for peace shall come my
                          brother
      Sing, sing a song of joy for men shall love each
                            other
    That day will dawn just as sure as hearts that are
                     pure are hearts set
    free No man must stand alone with outstretched
                hand before him Reach out
      and take them in yours with love that endures
                 for ever more Then sing a
          song of joy for love and understanding
Come sing a song of joy of freedom tell the story
    Sing, sing a song of joy for mankind in his glory
One mighty voice that will bring a sound that will ring for
                    evermore. Then
      sing a song of joy for love and understanding
What we must bear in mind are the features of the students
         we are working with at that specific moment:
 Their age, interests, likes and dislikes, and of course, their
               knowledge of the foreign language.
Music is academic

For some people, this is the primary reason for providing music
 lessons to their children. A recent study from the University of
California found that music trains the brain for higher forms of
  thinking. Second graders who were given music lessons scored
     27% higher on proportional math and fractions tests than
      children who received no special instruction. Research
  indicates that musical training permanently wires a young mind
                    for enhanced performance.
Music is physical
Music can be described as a sport. Learning to sing and keep
   rhythm develops coordination. The air and wind power
 necessary to blow a flute, trumpet or saxophone promotes a
                         healthy body.
Music is emotional
Music is an art form. We are emotional beings and every child
 requires an artistic outlet. Music may be your child’s vehicle
                         of expression.
Music is for life
Most people can’t play soccer, or football at 70 or 80 years of age
     but they can sing. And they can play piano or some other
 instrument. Music is a gift you can give your child that will last
                         their entire lives.
THE COLOR OF THE SKY

  • 1. CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF THE EQUADOR FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY, LETTERS AND SCIENCES OF THE EDUCATION SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES STUDENTS: DAISY MOREJÓN PAMELA SANDOVAL TITLE “THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC FOR CHILDREN IN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING”
  • 2. Songs and Rhymes provide relaxation and variety, but we have to be careful because an excessive use of them can make children to get bored. Taking this fact into account, we can say that songs are a good resource to teach vocabulary, practice the language orally, improve pronunciation and intonation and also help children to know the culture of the foreign language.
  • 3. Many of us know how quick students are at learning songs. For a variety of reasons, songs stick in our minds and become part of us for example: A-B-C-D-E-F-G H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P Q - R - S - T - U and V, W - X - Y and Z Now I know my A - B - C's Next time won't you sing with me?
  • 4. It is easier to sing a language than to speak it. Music is around us: radio, television, theatre, etc. Songs work in our short and long-term memory. Songs use simple, conversational language and repetitions. Children enjoy hearing themselves Songs are relaxing, fun, etc.
  • 5. For language teachers, songs are short, repetitive, and easily to handle in a lesson. Songs provide a link with home and school life, help children to develop positive attitude towards language learning and they reinforce lexical items and structures.

  • 8. Besides we cannot forget their important role in pronunciation, intonation and rhythm. We have got many reasons to use songs in the classroom: Motivation Songs easily motivate children to use the foreign language.

  • 11. Reinforcement They provide a meaningful way to repeat different items in order to reinforce the learning (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, etc.).
  • 12. It is essential to select carefully the songs we are going to work with in class.   • 14. What we must bear in mind are the features of the students we are working with at that specific moment: Their age, interests, likes and dislikes, and of course, their knowledge of the foreign language.
  • 15. Music is academic For some people, this is the primary reason for providing music lessons to their children. A recent study from the University of California found that music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Second graders who were given music lessons scored 27% higher on proportional math and fractions tests than children who received no special instruction. Research indicates that musical training permanently wires a young mind for enhanced performance.
  • 16. Music is physical Music can be described as a sport. Learning to sing and keep rhythm develops coordination. The air and wind power necessary to blow a flute, trumpet or saxophone promotes a healthy body.
  • 17. Music is emotional Music is an art form. We are emotional beings and every child requires an artistic outlet. Music may be your child’s vehicle of expression.
  • 18. Music is for life Most people can’t play soccer, or football at 70 or 80 years of age but they can sing. And they can play piano or some other instrument. Music is a gift you can give your child that will last their entire lives.
