values and intrudes upon our deep–seated ideologies and beliefs. Indeed the media has been a
powerful force in influencing people's perceptions, and more importantly, their behavior as well.
Business, politicians, and showbiz personalities pay huge sums of money to media firms in order
create an image or change an existing one. Politics in particular, has been making use of the media

seen on a daily basis. As time and technology has progressed, violence has become a more
prominent feature to certain types of media and is becoming less uncensored. Violence can now

I witness violence on Facebook several times a day. Just this morning, a video came across my
newsfeed about two first grade girls fighting on the school bus with each other. These young girls
were actually punching and kicking each other with the intent to cause bodily harm. I can also
vividly remember watching a video on Facebook of a young mother being beaten up by two other
girls while her toddler aged child stood on the side crying and screaming for her mother being
attacked. Not only are these violent fighting videos shared thousands, sometimes–even millions of
times, on Facebook, but there are also websites like World Star Hip Hop that feature and praise
violent videos like these. People often share these videos to express their upset for such horrific
actions or for personal entertainment purposes, but these videos could also negatively impact
society. Young adults and preteens are accessing social media platforms like Facebook at younger
ages than ever before. With younger children having access to these violent videos, it may
provoke young adults and preteens to think it is acceptable or funny to ac in this manner because
they do not see the people in the video being punished for their actions. If anything, young adults or

was the subject's violence rating of the video they viewed. Immediately after viewing the video,
each subject filled out a set of 5–point rating scales indicating the degree to which the video had

Violating the First Amendment is the most convincing argument against government intervention.
In my point of view, government law which bans violence in the media, is an exception to the
First Amendment and in some way empowers democracy in our society. Those who reject a
government intervention claim that censorship of songs, art, shows or any other kind of
entertainment media violates the First Amendment and the democratic principle of the freedom of
speech (Freedom of Expression in the Arts, 2002). Because of the validation of this argument, the

Many would say that violence in the media is the key problem in society today. However, an
analysis of violence in the media reveals that violence does create a more aggressive world, but that
is not the only plausible explanation. When violence is watched or participated in, the viewer's
heart rate and blood pressure increase and they have difficulty creating empathy for the others; they
are more apt to act out that anger. Others would argue that statistically violence has decreased in the
world, and that the violent behavior that is demonstrated by a few does not represent the whole of
society. It is with this reason that many say that there should be stricter ratings on video games and
movies, and parents should be better educated on ways to "teach" their children ways to deal with
