This document provides an overview of pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. It defines diabetes as a metabolic disease involving elevated blood glucose levels due to problems with insulin production or insulin resistance. The main types of diabetes are described as type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 results from failure of insulin production and type 2 from insulin resistance. Signs and symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss and fatigue. Treatment involves lifestyle changes like diet and exercise as well as medications to improve insulin availability or overcome insulin resistance.

Diabetes mellitus, often called simply diabetes, is a group of diseases that involve problems with your body's use of blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is an important source of energy for your cells, but if your blood sugar levels get too high, it can lead to serious health problems.
1. **Definition**:
- Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to insufficient insulin production or impaired insulin function.
2. **Types**:
- **Type 1 Diabetes**:
- Also known as insulin-dependent diabetes.
- Results from the immune system attacking and destroying insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
- Requires lifelong insulin therapy.
- **Type 2 Diabetes**:
- Most common type.
- Develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough.
- Managed through lifestyle changes, oral medications, and sometimes insulin.
- **Gestational Diabetes**:
- Occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves after childbirth.
3. **Symptoms**:
- Increased thirst and urination.
- Fatigue.
- Blurred vision.
- Unintentional weight loss.
4. **Complications**:
- Cardiovascular issues (heart disease, stroke).
- Kidney disease (nephropathy).
- Vision problems (retinopathy).
- Nerve damage (neuropathy).
5. **Prevention and Management**:
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Regular physical activity.
- Balanced diet.
- Regular check-ups and monitoring.
Remember to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and management if you suspect you have diabetes or are at risk.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a syndrome of chronic hyperglycaemia is due to one of two mechanisms:
Inadequate production of insulin , or
Inadequate sensitivity of cells to the action of insulin.
It affects more than 220 million people worldwide, and it is estimated that it will affect 440 million by the year 2030
"Diabetes" comes from the Greek word for "siphon", and implies that a lot of urine is made.
The second term,"mellitus" comes from the Latin word, "mel" which means "honey", and was used because the urine was sweet.
• The onset of type 1 diabetes may also be associated with sudden weight loss or nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pains, if DKA has developed.

Diabetes mellitus DM, is a metabolic disorder of biomolecules characterized by chronic hyperglycemia due to defects in insulin synthesis or utilization or both
DM requires lifelong therapy. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to control glycemia, as well as to limit the development of its devastating complications and manage such complications when they do occur.

The prostate is an exocrine gland of the male mammalian reproductive system
It is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system and is located in front of the rectum and just below the urinary bladder
Function is to store and secrete a clear, slightly alkaline fluid that constitutes 10-30% of the volume of the seminal fluid that along with the spermatozoa, constitutes semen
A healthy human prostate measures (4cm-vertical, by 3cm-horizontal, 2cm ant-post ).
It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It has anterior, median, posterior and two lateral lobes
It’s work is regulated by androgens which are responsible for male sex characteristics
Generalised disease of the prostate due to hormonal derangement which leads to non malignant enlargement of the gland (increase in the number of epithelial cells and stromal tissue)to cause compression of the urethra leading to symptoms (LUTS

3. DEFINITION
• Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease, involving
inappropriately elevated blood glucose levels.
• Too much sugar in the blood caused by problems with insulin
production .
• This include type-I diabetes (deficiency of insulin) and type-II
diabetes(initially excessive , then deficiency).
4. TYPES
• There are three main types of DM
1. Type-1 DM
2. Type-2 DM
3. Gestational diabetes
5. TYPES
• Type-1 DM:- It results from the body’s failure of insulin production by β-cells of the
islets of Langerhans in the Pancreas , leading to insulin deficiency .Only about
10% of all people with diabetes have Type-1 disease. Most people who have Type-1
diabetes develop the disease before age 30 although it can develop later in life
• Type-2 DM:- this form of DM which accounts for 90% of those with diabetes
,encompasses individual who have insulin resistance , diminished tissue
sensitivity to insulin , impaired β-cell function (delayed or inadequate insulin
release)and excessive or inappropriate glycogen secretion. Type-2 diabetes may
occur at any age but more common in people older than the age of 40.
• Gestational diabetes:- Blood sugar elevation during pregnancy is called
Gestational diabetes.
6. ETIOLOGY
• Although the specific etiology is unknown. Autoimmune destruction of
β-cells does not occur but it is attributed to typical genetic makeup,
familial history , obesity and defect in insulin receptor.
• Type-2 diabetes also tends to run in families, obesity, excess
production of growth hormone, high level Corticosteroids.
