1. 2 HOURS
ON ENERGY
EFFICIENCY
The ESET
How does it help you?
Bruxelles, 28 October 2015
Innovating for Sustainability in European Textiles and Clothing
2. Creates and deploys a unique Energy Saving and
Efficiency Tool (ESET) for SMEs of the European textile industry
Enables energy efficiency for 150 companies
by
applying the ESET with 50 companies,
training and assist further 100 companies
Unlocks energy saving potential for further 350 companies
Joins the Energy Made-to-Measure (EM2M) campaign
Develops the third generation of the
EE SAVING SCHEME (and Tools) of EM2M
what SET is and what SET does ?
SET is a project co-funded by the
Intelligent Energy Europe
programme
3. • Fragmented sector and mono-phase firms
• Often poor capacity of investment and lack of internal EE skills
• Difficulty in establishing valid benchmarks for plants with
a specific technology
• Create awareness and motivate to invest time and resources on Energy
Efficiency (not substituting Energy Audits and ESCOs role)
Thus it is necessary
• to achieve better awareness of energy uses and measures in the
company
• to evaluate own performances against similar factories
• to collect structured data (for example to prepare an audit)
The SET approach: starting point
4. The ESET is made up of:
• the ESET Tool, a stand-alone software for self-assessment, it runs on an Excel file
• the ESET Web, an application for advanced benchmarking and comparison of the
performances across years, it runs on a website.
• a guiding document to help using the ESET
• Updated reports on financial incentives & legal obligations on energy efficiency
ESET, tools for Energy Saving & Efficiency
6. software to monitor energy & assess savings
40,000 code lines
€105,000 development cost
2,600 hours of development in 3 projects
75% paid by the EU
€0 is the cost for textile companies
8. When do I waste energy ?
- Anomaly in March and in October
1 Monitor energy use
9. 2 Monitor year after year
Have I improved in 2015 comparing to 2014?
Compare your energy efficiency on yearly basis
10. 3 Benchmarking
Me and my competitors
Compare your factory’s energy performance with 10 similar companies
11. Benchmarking how?
• Everybody is unique, but there are always 10 companies closer to you
– 8 parameters to do matching (technology, raw materials,
market segment, application,
n° employee, turnover,
Subcontracting, average lot size)
– the sample is built around your company
– 1st filter (operator) to cut off un-realiable data
– 2nd filter (automatic) to cut off un-realiable data
12. 4 Efficiency in departments
Is this department or technology efficient ?
energy used vs use “in theory” to produce a mix of products,
on a weakly, monthly or yearly basis
yes it is !
Only 2% higher
consumption per
production unit
for this mix
13. Best Practises are also specific for
processes and machines.
These are elaborated by technology partners
and with Advisory Board support .
5 Textile best practies (max 113)
14. 6 Compare investments
Which option is better, based on my consumption?
- Assess investments profittability
- Based on the company consumption data

15. 6 Compare investments
Which option is better, based on my consumption?
- Assess investments profittability
- Based on the company consumption data
[…]
16. Anonymous & secure data !
• Nobody knows your company, the company names are not
in the database,
there is no match between the Unique ID and any company name
• The transmission of data is encrypted
• Data are stored in protected servers of ENEA, a national public
agency
• Data are shared only in aggregate manner
17. SET partners
Nine partners from Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary
and Romania
An advisory board including VDMA and ACIMIT representatives
Since October 2015 three new partners BAATPE (Bulgaria), HUP (Croatia) and
LATIA (Lithuanian).

Editor's Notes
To beging
NOTE for SET partners:
- It looks like an excel BUT it is actualy a software
105.000 is ENEA cost only
The total development costs is estimated €400.000, adding analysis and other partners. 4 times higher development cost
ENEA hours from SET 1400 (1200 from SESEC & ARTISAN projects)
« these are just examples »
NOTE FOR SET Partners
The ESET tool monitoring function, that you can see in the picture allow companies to see different consumptions and spot anomaly.
Example based on a real case:
«What did you do in October? Why the consumption went up if production went down?
« Is reasonable that in August to produce 40% less the company needed 70% more electricity?
Is it necessay to take action?
NOTE FOR SET Partners
The ESET tool monitoring function aplied on yearly basis, that you can see in the picture, allows companies to see progress on energy efficiency (if any)
Yes in this case the red line (energy use) goes down and the blue colum (production output) in 2014 is bigger than in 2013. this means that the company makes scale economies: more was produced with less energy
NOTE FOR SET Partners
The ESET tool overview of energy source, that you see in the picture, allows companies to see which energy source is more important and which is less, this helps taking decision on where to act.
In this example the company will find interesting to invest on cogeneration rather than on new photovolatic cells, because «heat» (made by cogeneration) is more important for the company than electicity (made by photovoltaic cells)
NOTE FOR SET Partners
The ESET benchmarking function is one of the most original creation of the SET project.
In this company you see a company performace (pink) compared to the average performace of the 10 most similar companies (blue) and compared to the european textile and clothing industrial use (brown, source Eurostat)
NOTE FOR SET Partners
The ESET benchmarking is very accurate
The are 8 parameters used to define what a similar company is (see list)
The sample is built arround your company it means the sample is made by the 10 most similar companies to yours
The data of the such sample are used to benchmark you, or in other words you energy perfomance will not be compared those of a company which produces very different items or in different conditions.
A 1st filter is applied by an ENEA operatorwhich
Check the source (if available) and question may decice not use data of un-reliable soruces
A 2nd filter is applied by the software algoritms whcih check the coherence or trustworthy of data
So far the sample takes 10 data sets (from the most similar companies) out of a sample of 38 data set (as of September 2015) the goal is to reach at least 100 data set by the end of the project.
NOTE FOR SET Partners
The ESET web (the on line part) efficiency function is another very peculiar creation of the SET project.
This allow companis to check the energy efficiency of a department (in this picture) or of a technology (next slide) by comparing actual use of energy per output of very specific product or mix of products, on yearly, montly or weekly basis.
About the « very specific product t or mix of product » here follows an example of the level of details:
The company produced:
50,000 kg of fabric 75% poliester 25% cotton with ring tecnology and yarn count 71 Nm
35,000 kg of fabric 100% cotton with rotor spinning technology
The accuracy is great since electricity to produce 75%+25% with a x technology is different than the electricity used to produce 100% cotton with a different technology.
This function is able to appreciate such differences
Note: To use this function: the company must know the real consumption of the selected machines.
NOTE FOR SET Partners
This best practice “Reconsideration of electric supply contract” is given when:
The company electricity price is higher than the average national one
and
The company electric consumption is high for the sector
NOTE FOR SET Partners
This best practice “Preheating boiler feed water with heat from flue gas (economizer)
” is given when:
The factory uses steam / hot water
AND
The factory’s thermal consumption weighs more then 30% of overall factory consumption OR the factory’s thermal consumption weigh between 20% and 30% with a “thermal index” > reference for each kind of production
In short:
if the company use steam / hot water and the thermal consumption is heavy
NOTE FOR SET Partners
This best practice “Limitation of heated / Conditioned volumes” is given when:
The height of rooms appropriate to needs of machine
OR
• Company air conditioning day = 0 AND Company heating days < threshold based on heating degree-days of company’s country (HDD) from Eurostat
In Short:
Best practises is given if the rooms ceiling is high, much more than the high of the machines (in other words a lot of space between the top of the machine and the ceiling) and the company uses air conditioning or a lot of heating
NOTE FOR SET Partners
This best practice “using LED lights” is given when:
The factory keeps illuminated rooms/places even if light is not continuously need
AND
The factory’s electrical consumption counts for more then 30% of overall factory consumption
OR
the factory’s electrical consumption counts between 20% and 30% with a “electrical index” higher than the reference value for each type of production
In Short:
This Best practice is given if there are illuminated rooms/places where light is need not continuously and consumption appears high
NOTE FOR SET Partners
Company plans to invest
Company knows costs for two possible solutions (revamping a machine or substitute it, for example, as result of a technical analysis of experts or suppliers)
Then
Company use the ESET to fill in the investment module whcih relate costs to the potential benefits that can be expected according to the company specific energy uses (and possible variations)
In other words the ESET tells you which options is better for you (your consumption model) not in general terms, that’s the value of it !!

The 1st point means that evin in case of hackers manage to violate a DB they find no company names
