The production of Pashmina shawls originated in Kashmir and has a long history there. It was introduced to Kashmir in the 15th century and gained popularity under Mughal rule. Pashmina production is concentrated in Srinagar and involves many artisans with specialized roles. The production process takes over 200 man-hours and results in a product that can cost between Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 100,000 depending on the craftsmanship. Pashmina weaving is threatened by cheap imitations but maintaining the tradition is important for the artisans of Kashmir.
