Trace fossil assemblage of arthropods can be a good way
to understand the paleoenvironments characteristics like
environmental energy, oxygenation, salinity and substrate
consistence. Trackways and trails, reveals important habits
of extinct arthropods, however usually the imprints of the
distal part of the legs, as podium imprints preserves, hence
limiting interpretations of the possible producer. Resting
trace can provide much more accurate information about
the morphology of the producer, as they usually conserve
the entire animal impression.
INTRODUCTION
The trace fossils preserved in the rhythmites, of silt and
clay, in the top of Rio do Sul Formation, Paraná Basin, are
spectacular in variety and preservation (see in the next
slide). They bring a unique insight into the activities of
invertebrates, and reveal the presence of a diverse
arthropod-fauna
INTRODUCTION
To date, previous studies (e.g. Nogueira & Netto 2001a, b;
Netto et al. 2012; Corrêa et al. 2014; Lima et al. 2015)
shown that in these layers, ichnotaxa such as Cruziana
problematica, Diplichnites gouldi, Glaciichnium isp.,
Gluckstadtella elongata, Helminthoidichnites tenuis,
Mermia carickensis, Protovirgularia dichotoma,
Treptichnus pollardi and Umfolozia sinuosa are
observable .

INTRODUCTION
A few examples of the diverse icnofauna can be seen in the images below. Trace fossil like
Helminthoidichnites tenuis are abundant and Cruziana problematica, Diplichnites gouldi, are also very present.
GOALS
• Shows the first record of a well-preserved jumping trackway, from Gondwana
deposits.
• Discuss the probable producer and the behavior represented
• Suggest a possible paleoenvironmental significance
GEOLOGICAL SETTING
The material studied in this research came from the glacial deposits
from the Itararé Group, in the Paraná Basin. The Itararé Group presents
one of the most well-preserved record of glacial rocks and arthropod
trace fossils in the Gowndwana. This group was subdivided by
Schneider et al. (1974) into three formations. At the base was described
the Campo do Tenente Formation followed by Mafra Formation and, at
the top, the Rio do Sul Formation. Posterior studies, made by França &
Potter (1988) and Milani et al. (1997) reclassified these sections into
Lagoa Azul Formation, Campo Mourão Formation and Taciba
Formation, from base to top. In this work, the nomenclatures of
Schneider et al. (1974) were adopted, since the type area of their
studies permeate the region studied in paper, mainly the Rio do Sul
Formation, which is the focus of this research.

Description: The traces have bilateral symmetry and are
composed of two sets of structures (anterior and posterior).
The anterior part is characterized by a variated number of
elongate impressions sometimes split in two, perpendicular
to the medial line. The posterior part is formed by circular to
ellipsoidal resting traces, parallel to the medial line, most of
the times connected to each other, some features contain
three sequential ellipsoidal marks, parallel to the medial line
with a mean interval of 10 mm between them. The
specimens studied are preserved in a single jumping trail
composed of 12 resting traces (called R1 to R12), arranged
mainly in a straight line. The average length of each resting
trace is 7.23 cm and width 5.13 cm, the average distance
between the resting traces is 5.38 cm. The jumping trails is
preserved in concave epirelief.

CONSIDERANTIONS
The aim of the present research was to examine and describe a new jumping
trackway for the upper Paleozoic strata. This study has found that this trace
fossil was produced by an arthropod, based on the morphology, behavior and
comparison with other ichnotaxons. Thus, the presence of this trackway can
suggest a paleoenvironment with moments of subaerial exposure, and give one
more evidence of a possible tidal flat setting discussed in the literature.

  • 1. NEW ARTHROPOD JUMPING TRACKWAY FROM THE LATE PALEOZOIC GLACIALLY-RELATED DEPOSITS, PARANÁ BASIN, BRAZIL Dhiego C. Silva¹*, Cristina S. Vega², Fernando F. Vesely², Robson T. Bolzon², Danielle C. B. Schemiko¹, Jennyfer P. C. Pietsch³, Malton C. Fraga³, Raíssa C. O. Fontanelli³.
  • 3. Trace fossil assemblage of arthropods can be a good way to understand the paleoenvironments characteristics like environmental energy, oxygenation, salinity and substrate consistence. Trackways and trails, reveals important habits of extinct arthropods, however usually the imprints of the distal part of the legs, as podium imprints preserves, hence limiting interpretations of the possible producer. Resting trace can provide much more accurate information about the morphology of the producer, as they usually conserve the entire animal impression. INTRODUCTION
  • 4. The trace fossils preserved in the rhythmites, of silt and clay, in the top of Rio do Sul Formation, Paraná Basin, are spectacular in variety and preservation (see in the next slide). They bring a unique insight into the activities of invertebrates, and reveal the presence of a diverse arthropod-fauna INTRODUCTION To date, previous studies (e.g. Nogueira & Netto 2001a, b; Netto et al. 2012; Corrêa et al. 2014; Lima et al. 2015) shown that in these layers, ichnotaxa such as Cruziana problematica, Diplichnites gouldi, Glaciichnium isp., Gluckstadtella elongata, Helminthoidichnites tenuis, Mermia carickensis, Protovirgularia dichotoma, Treptichnus pollardi and Umfolozia sinuosa are observable .
  • 5. Legend: A) UFPR 00 44 IC. B) UFPR 0045 IC A e UFPR 0045 IC B C) UFPR 0045 IC. Scale: 5 cm. INTRODUCTION A few examples of the diverse icnofauna can be seen in the images below. Trace fossil like Helminthoidichnites tenuis are abundant and Cruziana problematica, Diplichnites gouldi, are also very present.
  • 6. GOALS • Shows the first record of a well-preserved jumping trackway, from Gondwana deposits. • Discuss the probable producer and the behavior represented • Suggest a possible paleoenvironmental significance
  • 7. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The material studied in this research came from the glacial deposits from the Itararé Group, in the Paraná Basin. The Itararé Group presents one of the most well-preserved record of glacial rocks and arthropod trace fossils in the Gowndwana. This group was subdivided by Schneider et al. (1974) into three formations. At the base was described the Campo do Tenente Formation followed by Mafra Formation and, at the top, the Rio do Sul Formation. Posterior studies, made by França & Potter (1988) and Milani et al. (1997) reclassified these sections into Lagoa Azul Formation, Campo Mourão Formation and Taciba Formation, from base to top. In this work, the nomenclatures of Schneider et al. (1974) were adopted, since the type area of their studies permeate the region studied in paper, mainly the Rio do Sul Formation, which is the focus of this research.

  • 16. Legend: R: resting trace, R?: undefined resting trace, DI: double impression, EP: eroded pair, SI: single impression and PP: pair of posterior appendages. All the lines in the background are representation of Helminthoidichnites tenuis. Scale bar: 10 cm. CONSIDERANTIONS
  • 17. Speciment in description process 20 cm Description: The traces have bilateral symmetry and are composed of two sets of structures (anterior and posterior). The anterior part is characterized by a variated number of elongate impressions sometimes split in two, perpendicular to the medial line. The posterior part is formed by circular to ellipsoidal resting traces, parallel to the medial line, most of the times connected to each other, some features contain three sequential ellipsoidal marks, parallel to the medial line with a mean interval of 10 mm between them. The specimens studied are preserved in a single jumping trail composed of 12 resting traces (called R1 to R12), arranged mainly in a straight line. The average length of each resting trace is 7.23 cm and width 5.13 cm, the average distance between the resting traces is 5.38 cm. The jumping trails is preserved in concave epirelief. CONSIDERANTIONS
  • 18. 2 cm 20 cm CONSIDERANTIONS Sedimentary structures found in the UFPR 0042 samples. Raindrops and Helminthoidichnites tenuis in the right picture. And deformation probable caused by MISS.
  • 19. CONSIDERANTIONS The aim of the present research was to examine and describe a new jumping trackway for the upper Paleozoic strata. This study has found that this trace fossil was produced by an arthropod, based on the morphology, behavior and comparison with other ichnotaxons. Thus, the presence of this trackway can suggest a paleoenvironment with moments of subaerial exposure, and give one more evidence of a possible tidal flat setting discussed in the literature.
