The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) annually recognizes citizens and businesses that have implemented sustainable practices through its Earth Day Awards program. The program has four award categories based on business/entity size and also recognizes individuals. Winners are honored for projects conducted in the previous year that demonstrate energy conservation, waste reduction, pollution prevention or other environmentally-conscious practices. Entries are judged by a DHEC committee and winners will be announced on Earth Day (April 22, 2009). Information on applying is available online or by contacting DHEC. DHEC also publishes the SC Green Guide magazine highlighting environmental issues, solutions, and tips for citizens.
