The students at HLC International participated in a Design for Change initiative to promote reuse and reduce waste. They collected over 200 donated items through a donation drive. The items were sorted and many were used to make over 500 paper bags. The bags were distributed at a local mall to raise awareness about reuse and reducing plastic waste. The students' project had an impact beyond their local area and inspired other schools to implement similar initiatives.

The students at HLC International school participated in the Design for Change initiative for the past 2 years by donating books, toys, and initiating a signature campaign about a garbage dump. This year, they wanted to promote reuse by collecting donated items from their school and making paper bags to distribute the items and spread awareness about reducing waste. They collected 241 items of clothing, 125 toys, and 41 books. The students sorted, repaired, and donated the items, then made over 550 paper bags which they distributed at a local mall to teach others how to reuse materials. They shared their experience with other schools who were inspired to start their own initiatives.

An Eagle Scout from New Jersey built an earthquake-proof schoolhouse in a rural village in Guatemala as his Eagle Scout project. Inspired by his grandmother who taught indigenous people in Guatemala, Joseph Vitale raised over $11,000 and worked with a nonprofit to construct the school. Over two years he planned fundraising efforts, communicated with architects, and traveled to Guatemala to help build the school. The 20x80 foot schoolhouse now provides education to children in kindergarten through 6th grade.

Kids Helping Kids - Final Presentation

We often talk about illiteracy with respect to students. Teachers are evaluated constantly on their ability to make their students meet the mark. Meeting this mark is the measure of literacy. This paper identifies and discusses the relationship between teachers creativity and students literacy. It argues that creative illiteracy on the part of our teachers can lead to the big ILLITERACY that we fear for our students. It is based on observations and discussions with teachers and students in a number of schools over a period of 6 months.

Pasir ris pr trash to trasure form
The students from Pasir Ris Primary School embarked on a social innovation project called "Trash to Treasure" to reduce waste by connecting people throwing away usable goods with others seeking those items. Their goals were to have an online blog where classmates could post photos of items they wanted to exchange or donate, and to collect items around their neighborhood that could still be used instead of thrown in the landfill. An initial survey found that classmates were interested in exchanging toys, books, and costume jewelry. The project is ongoing, with the students hoping their blog can help keep useful items out of the landfill with community support.
Trash
1) Students at a school in India read a book about trash and rag pickers that sparked questions and interest in the topic.
2) They conducted a project where they learned about the lives of rag pickers by meeting with an organization that works with them.
3) As part of the project, the students made over 3,300 paper bags and decided to ban plastic bags in their own school as a way to be the change themselves.

- 3. What was done at HLC International? We had been a part of the Design for Change initiative for the past 2 years. The first year we helped a school for the underprivileged by donating books and toys. The next year we found a lot of garbage being burnt in the dump yard behind our school. We tried to take the matter with the concerned authorities by initiating a signature campaign in offices, schools and homes that were close to the garbage dump yard. This year, we wanted to do something new, something which had not been tackled before, something that will reach a lot of people.
