This document discusses various ways to define and measure development across countries. It explains that development can be economic, demographic, social, political or cultural. It also discusses several common metrics used to measure development, including GDP, GNI, HDI, GDI and HPI. 18. Calculating the HDI: The HDI for any country is calculated using three variables : Income- measured by GDP per capita Knowledge- measured by adult literacy and the % of children attending school. Longevity- measured by life expectancy at birth.
