Deuteronomy is the most quoted book in the Old Testament by Jesus, and so a close examination is worthwhile.

There is only one thing worse than our being deceived by someone, that is, deceiving ourselves. We deceive ourselves when we hear the word of God but do not obey. We deceive ourselves when we think we can associate with sinners and it not affect us. We deceive ourselves when we we say we have no sin. We deceive ourselves when we think our sin is not our fault. We deceive ourselves when we think too highly of ourselves. We deceive ourselves when we defile the temple of God. We deceive ourselves when we think we are wise in this age. We deceive ourselves when we do not control our tongue. We deceive ourselves when we think we can sow one thing and reap another. We deceive ourselves when we can be unrighteous and still make it to heaven.

B. Leniency is not a license for lasciviousness. (Exo 34:6, Exo 34:7)

Conclusion: Mic 7:9, 18
Many things happen in life and often seem nonsensical. But if I do not know how bitter it tastes, how can I know how sweet it tastes? Everything seems to be for our growth and transformation. Situations do not appear just at whim in the life.
God intended for the Jews to live in the land he promised them. The problem is: this land was already occupied by other people. In telling the Jews to “take” the land, did God command genocide or ethnic cleansing? This is a difficult and often misunderstood part of the Old Testament history. How can a God of love be responsible for wiping out “innocent” people, for the sake of his own…or were they innocent?

Bible Readings for Module/Week 2
Parable of the Wheat and Tares
Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
"The owner's servants came to him and said, 'Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?'
"'An enemy did this,' he replied.
"The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?'
"'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.'" (Matthew 13:24–30)
Knowledge and wisdom
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. (Proverbs 1:7)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
all who follow his precepts have good understanding.
To him belongs eternal praise. (Psalm 111:10)
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil. (Proverbs 3:3–7)
Problem with the World (Sin)
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned. (Romans 5:12)
As it is written, "There is none righteous, not even one.” (Romans 3:10)
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
Strength
Strength in God, Not in Man
For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. (I Corinthians 1:25)
I can do everything through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:13)
God Demonstrates His Strength in Our Weakness
Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are. (I Corinthians 1:26–28)
But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (II Corinthians 12:9–11)
The Strong are to Help the Weak
We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. ...

Renewed in Grace
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

4. A book written the last month of Moses
life
Moses will give three long sermons
in the book about where they came
from and where they are going to
5. In Genesis the Spirit hovered over the waters in
creating the previously formless and void world in
Genesis
In Deuteronomy God as eagle hovered over a people in the
formless and void dessert to make a nation
6. A first sermon, remembering where they
came from ( Duet 1:6 – 4:43) Bringing to
remembrance going from deliverance to about to enter
the promised land
After a brief prologue in Deut 1:1-5…
7. and the sermon starts with a bit of
motivational encouragement
• Just as God told the Israelites in the 2nd
year after being around Mt Sinai and
having made the tabernacle and
celebrated the first Passover ‘you have
spent long enough son this mountain’ i.e.
He will lead you to ‘move on’
• The new generation in this last month of
Moses life should ‘move on’ to the
promised land
8. A bit ironic ….
In the first example of name
Jair the Manassite named villages in a region after
himself – an Old Testament ‘selfie’? Self not
God…
Deuteronomy 3:14
Jair the Manassite took all the region of Argob,
that is, Bashan, as far as the border of the
Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the
villages after his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is
to this day.)
9. A second sermon regarding
honoring God while dwelling in
the land.
Covenant stipulations
Deut 4:44 – 27:19
11. Matt 22:34-40
• 34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced
the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of
them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the
Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall
love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your
mind. 38 This is the great and first
commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You
shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two
commandments depend all the Law and the
Prophets.”
12. Some shall and shall nots:
use of God’s name
Deuteronomy 5:11
“‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your
God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him
guiltless who takes his name in vain.
Deuteronomy 6:13
It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you
shall serve and by his name you shall swear.
13. An eclipse of the names of nations
Deuteronomy 7:24
And he will give their kings into your hand, and you shall
make their name perish from under heaven. No one shall
be able to stand against you until you have destroyed
them.
Deuteronomy 9:14
Let me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their
name from under heaven. And I will make of you a nation
mightier and greater than they.’
14. Job description of the tribe of Levi
Deuteronomy 10:8
At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi
to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord to
stand before the Lord to minister to him and to
bless in his name, to this day.
15. The name you should respect
Deuteronomy 10:20
You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall
serve him and hold fast to him, and by his
name you shall swear.
16. God not godz
Deuteronomy 12:3
You shall tear down their altars and dash in
pieces their pillars and burn their Asherim
with fire. You shall chop down the carved
images of their gods and destroy their name
out of that place.
17. A people chosen to bear God’s name
Deuteronomy 12:5
But you shall seek the place that the Lord
your God will choose out of all your tribes
to put his name and make his habitation
there. There you shall go,
18. At the center of the book
The largest concentration of references to God’s
name is regarding the place of ‘the temple’
where at that time the tabernacle moved place
to place
19. A place and temple to bear God’s name:
A place to celebrate and hold feasts
Deuteronomy 14:23
And before the Lord your God, in the place that he will
choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the
tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and
the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you may learn
to fear the Lord your God always.
Deuteronomy 14:24
And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not
able to carry the tithe, when the Lord your God blesses
you, because the place is too far from you, which the
Lord your God chooses, to set his name there,
20. A place and temple to bear God’s name:
A place to sacrifice and to give in God’s honor
Deuteronomy 12:11
then to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to
make his name dwell there, there you shall bring all that I
command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your
tithes and the contribution that you present, and all your
finest vow offerings that you vow to the Lord.
Deuteronomy 12:21
If the place that the Lord your God will choose to put his
name there is too far from you, then you may kill any of
your herd or your flock, which the Lord has given you, as I
have commanded you, and you may eat within your towns
whenever you desire.
21. A place and temple to bear God’s name:
To celebrate the Passover
Deuteronomy 16:2
And you shall offer the Passover sacrifice to the Lord your God, from
the flock or the herd, at the place that the Lord will choose, to make
his name dwell there.
Deuteronomy 16:6
but at the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name
dwell in it, there you shall offer the Passover sacrifice, in the evening
at sunset, at the time you came out of Egypt.
Deuteronomy 16:11
And you shall rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your son and
your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, the Levite
who is within your towns, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow
who are among you, at the place that the Lord your God will choose,
to make his name dwell there.
22. A king for the promised land
Deuteronomy 17:15
you may indeed set a king over you whom
the Lord your God will choose. One from
among your brothers you shall set as king
over you. You may not put a foreigner over
you, who is not your brother.
23. A priest for God’s name
Deuteronomy 18:5
For the Lord your God has chosen him out of all your tribes
to stand and minister in the name of the Lord, him and his
sons for all time.
Deuteronomy 18:7
and ministers in the name of the Lord his God, like all his
fellow Levites who stand to minister there before the
Lord,
24. A prophet for God’s name
Deuteronomy 18:19
And whoever will not listen to my words
that he shall speak in my name, I myself
will require it of him.
25. About those false prophets….
Deuteronomy 18:20
But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my
name that I have not commanded him to speak, or
who speaks in the name of other gods, that same
prophet shall die.’
Deuteronomy 18:22
when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the
word does not come to pass or come true, that is a
word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has
spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of
him.
26. Job description of the Levites, helpers of the priests: bless
God’s name
Job description of the Levites, helpers of the
priests
Bless God’s name
Deuteronomy 21:5
Then the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come
forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to
minister to him and to bless in the name of the
Lord, and by their word every dispute and every
assault shall be settled.
27. Matt 22:34-40
• 34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced
the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of
them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the

your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first
commandment. 39 And a second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
40 On these two commandments depend
all the Law and the Prophets.”
28. Justice and holiness required
and love for others,
the love of God being seen in love of neighbor
29. Punishment for a false accusation from a son in law who
brought down the good name of a daughter
Deuteronomy 22:14
and accuses her of misconduct and brings a bad name upon her,
saying, ‘I took this woman, and when I came near her, I did not
find in her evidence of virginity,’
Deuteronomy 22:19
and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give
them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought
a bad name upon a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife. He
may not divorce her all his days.
Love of God protecting the good name of others
30. Keeping alive a good name of a brother
Deuteronomy 25:6
And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to
the name of his dead brother, that his name may
not be blotted out of Israel.
Deuteronomy 25:7
And if the man does not wish to take his brother's
wife, then his brother's wife shall go up to the gate
to the elders and say, ‘My husband's brother refuses
to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel; he will
not perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.’
31. But if they don’t…
Deuteronomy 25:10
And the name of his house shall be called in
Israel, ‘The house of him who had his sandal
pulled off.’
32. First fruits brought to the place God’s name dwells
•
• Deuteronomy 26:2
