Designing for difference: Are you failing at the most important design challengeWhitney Quesenbery
There is no such thing as a “typical user.” People may have similar goals or jobs to get done, but they bring differences in preferences, knowledge, language, interaction style, and perspectives. Broadening our vision to design for differences is a conscious act of innovation. It starts with embracing the tools of accessibility, plain language, and language access for modern, responsive design. And broadening our research and testing to include the full diversity of our audiences. If you aren’t designing for difference, ask yourself who are you leaving out.
At the Center for Civic Design, we’ve learned that designing democracy requires changing our practice and how we approach our work. As one project partner put it, “If all we do is make it a little easier for people who already vote, we have failed.” From voter guides to ballots, the goal of our work is to expand civic engagement and participation - including everyone, with all their differences

Life, actually: An All Channels Open approach to real time research on the moveCrowdLab
We know that people behave irrationally, spontaneously, sub consciously, and non-sequentially. However, research is still largely isolated, linear, and at a single point in time. Why do we tell people they have to fill out a survey in one sitting, or join a discussion at their desktop at 8pm on a Monday night or drive 20 miles to a focus group facility on a wet Wednesday in January only to be asked to remember what they were doing in Waitrose at 3pm last Thursday?
This is not how people live their lives.
Mobile research methodologies have started to open the door to a new way of collecting data, but its potential will remain unfulfilled if the prevailing methodological wisdom is to simply think of mobile as another way to deliver the same techniques, or simply focus on gathering insight quickly.
Designing platforms for research should be done solely in the best interest of the people taking part in the research, allowing them to complete tasks on any device they want, maximising the potential of that device, and blending devices as needed. We can then allow people to tell us their thoughts in an online discussion one day, from any device they have to hand at the time, record experiences via their phone in real time, via both qualitative and quantitative means, before engaging in a dialogue with a skilled researcher about their behaviours or sharing with their peers and discovering new insights about each other as a group.
When research reflects how people make decisions, based on how we know people to be, and that they live their lives in a series of disconnected moments, we will get more natural, open, engaging and real insight.

Anthropology is the study of humans past and present. Design is the skill of solving complex problems to create a better future. But can a discipline focused on the past/present merge with a discipline focused on the future? The answer is yes. Welcome to Design Anthropology 101.
Design anthropology converges two powerful fields that can push design beyond just “innovation”. In this talk, you’ll learn what design anthropology is and what it means for the future of design. Most importantly, you’ll walk away with a basic understanding of how to use ethnographic methodologies and collaboration to make products that push humanity forward.

Target Audiences - Key Messages - User ScenariosBob Bertsch
A communication strategy is built partly on determining who you want to reach, what you want them to do, what you can say to make them do it and when you need to say it to get them to act.
These slide review the concepts of target audience, key messages and user scenarios as tools to help Extension professional affect change.
Today many of the same techniques that Packard warned about sixty years ago in his classic "The Hidden Persuaders" are being used without hesitation to persuade users of digital products to subscribe, click, scroll, buy, invite and more. The same people who claim a user-centric mindset have no second thoughts when using learnings from psychology to obviously steer users towards desired behaviours.
In this talk I give examples of growing problem areas and and describe how designers need to take more responsibility for the well-being and autonomy of users, as well as some practical ways this could play out. There is a cost to doing the right thing, but there are also rarely measured human costs that we are already paying dearly for. By showcasing these costs of the different paths available to us we can boost the incentive to include more conscious, moral decision-making in the design process.

Getting Personal: Do Personas Help or Hinder Content Design? Kelly Wondracek
Personas are tricky things. While their intent is to understand a user and effectively speak to their needs, they can often lead us astray if we’re not careful. Under the hood, there are often misunderstandings, missed opportunities, and wonky assumptions.
This presentation reflects about lessons learned through audience targeting, particularly in the realm of UX content strategy. How do we avoid personal biases and pave the way for sincere empathy? Is it better to be broad or specific? Is it even possible to assess the unique needs of everyone who will be experiencing your product or design?

Unveiling the Secrets How Does Generative AI Work.pdfSam H
At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. It is like a sculptor who has studied so many forms found in nature and then uses this knowledge to create sculptures from his imagination that have never been seen before anywhere else. If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.
