A good example of typography in logo design is when you look at Nike’s “swoosh” logo.
The entire shape of their famous logo was inspired by an athletic shoe called the “Nike Air Kix” but they didn’t just copy it exactly—they made subtle changes that made it unique from other brands’ logos at the time with “Nike” written across them (which would have been extremely easy for competitors to do).
What are the different types of typography?
There are many different types of typography that can be used in logo design. We’ll cover these below, but first let’s discuss the basics:
Serif fonts have small endings on the ends of their strokes (think “a” in “apple”). Serifs were popular in print until the mid-20th century and still tend to be used today by newspapers and other publications.
Sans serif fonts do not have any decorative flourishes at all—they’re simply plain drawings without any decoration or flourish whatsoever. The most famous sans serif font is Helvetica, which has been around since 1957 (and we love it). This typeface was designed by Max Miedinger as part of an advertising campaign for Swiss watchmaker Breitling; however, Helvetica isn’t just restricted to this typeface either! There are several other variations available online if you’d like something more customized than what comes with your standard computer monitor screen font selection system.

Objective: To create a logo for one of the following company's that captures the attention of the demographic while depicting the nature of the business. You will also develop a branding guidelines sheet for your logo. The brand guide will include color & type; along with images utilizing logo on building structure and street advertisement as a communication device.
Graphic Design skills: Formal elements of design such as focal point, hierarchy, eye flow (continuation), unity through grids, balance using negative and positive space.
Typographic Concepts: Typographic rules, leading, kerning, alignment, use of serif, sans serif, and script type faces. Using classic typefaces or typeface that communicate a style, purpose or message.

Usually, the ideas and concept behind the logo are complex, yet are represented in the simplest form possible. The abstract symbols can often take on a target market or stylistic form, (technology, health care, or nonprofit, etc). However, in many cases you will find a graphic representation of a pictorial object in a logo mark; a recognizable noun, (an apple, a panda bear, a rabbit, a tree, etc).

3. Printing Options
Our yard signs can be printed as single sided or double
sided. There are reasons why you would only print on
one side rather than both sides. For example. Say you
are advertising to oncoming car traffic on a one way
street. There’s no need to print the message on both
sides of your sign since it’s a one way street. By printing
on one side not only will be more effective, the cost will
be nice as well.
4. Simple is a Great Option
Keep the sign simple! You’ve heard the phrase “don’t
judge a book by it’s cover” right? Well, it’s best not to
over do the sign design…keep it simple. Two lines might
be all it takes to generate traffic. It’s easy to read and
those passing by are more likely to understand the
message. If you say too much, some may not fully
understand your message. Sometimes it’s best to do
less.
5. Use Symbols
A great symbol that is often used with custom signs
include arrows. Not only can they grab someones
attention, they inform individuals which direction to go.
This can be more effective than using an address if
located closely to the destination.
6. Include a Logo - Yes or No?
You can include a logo on the sign, only if the customer
already knows what it means. Yard signs can be difficult
to use if it’s for a new business. Signs are great to tell
them about you and your business. If yo are having a
difficult time including the content, it may also be best
to remove the logo. The logo can take up a lot of space.

7. Color Contrast
If you have a sign that consists of black and white, try to
make the message in black and include the phone
number as white. Having white against a black
background will pop!
8. Your Message
Similar to our discussion on making a simple sign, the
message must be clear and concise. Select a specific
service or product to highlight the sign rather than
trying to focus on all services or products. Use a
promotions. For example; Oil Change for $21.00. It’s
simple and gets the message across. Use different signs
to promote additional products or services.
9. Choosing the Right Font
Yes, the font can either help or hinder the message of
the custom sign. Select the fonts that are easy to read
such as Verdana, Arial and SansSerif are all good fonts.

Others include Gill Sans Regular, Helvetica Regular and
Baskerville Regular.
10. The Space
White space is often frowned upon, but with custom
signs, white space = legibility. It best if there is anywhere
from 30 - 40% white space on the sign. It will be very
difficult to read if you offer less what space. Especially
for those passing the sign at high speed.
11. Size of the Font Chosen
Large font is easier to read from a greater distance.
There are charts available to show which size the font
should be when traveling mph. A rule of thumb. Yard
signs are great for targeting those traveling less than 30
mph.
