Experience Design for the IoT | Tim Scanlon - 2016 Tongji Design Week Keynote Tim Scanlon
This is one of 2 presentations Tim Scanlon presented in Shanghai during the Fall of 2016. Every autumn, the Tongji University College of Design and Innovation organizes a small, highly interactive conference on design research and design education titled “Emerging Practices” (EPC). Since the first EPC in 2012, this has become an annual forum for debates on such themes as new practices, values, and approaches arising in design and design education; open design; influences on
developing practices; DesignX; and design activism. The main theme of EPC this year is “Design in Complexity.” It will continue and expand the conversation initiated by the DesignX Manifesto in 2014. This conversation developed further in a
two-day DesignX workshop hosted by Tongji University in 2015. The first DesignX Manifesto articulated the nature of working in and with complex sociotechnical systems, attempting to explore the framework for designers to address such issues. The follow-up DesignX workshop explored the
principles of working with such systems, highlighted the importance and difficulty of implementing solutions to DesignX problems. The workshop focused on several valuable cases. It sparked a lively discussion that we will continue this year
This talk was presented at NoVA UX event on August 21, 2019. One year ago Jim Lane joined Virtru, a data protection and privacy organization in Washington DC, to build out UX as a discipline in a seven-year-old security company. In his talk Jim outlines establishing a charter, hiring a team, establishing user-centered product development process, choosing tools for scale and speed, and design strategy.

Meet the Founders: An Open Discussion About Rewriting Using RustInfluxData
Rust is a systems programming language designed for high performance, type safety, and concurrency. According to Stack Overflow’s annual survey in 2022, Rust is the most loved language with 87% of developers saying they want to continue using it. The same survey also reported that nearly 20% of developers aren’t currently using Rust, but want to start developing using it.
Ockam’s suite of programming libraries, command line tools, and managed cloud services enable developers to orchestrate end-to-end encryption. InfluxDB is the purpose-built time series database developed to handle time series data for IoT, monitoring, and real-time analytics. Ockam was originally developed using C, and InfluxDB was originally written using Go; both solutions have been completely rewritten in Rust. Discover why two founders decided to rewrite their developer tools using Rust, and gain insight into the strategy beforehand and the entire process.

Video Streaming Outside The Firewall Market Shares, Strategies, and Forecasts...ReportLinker.com
WinterGreen Research announces the following study: Video Streaming Outside the Firewall Market Shares, Strategies, and Forecasts, Worldwide, 2012-2018.Video content delivery on the internet is all about content and infrastructure. Infrastructure is needed to manage end point devices. Content is almost an afterthought once the infrastructure is in place. The vision of video content delivery is to change fundamentally the way media is accessed and consumed. User generated content represents a move away from entirely professional content to some content captured on the fly. As better video tools become more widely available, the quality of the user generated content and the professional video begins to converge. There has often been little or no charge for uploading user-generated content. As a result, data centers are replete with exabytes of user-generated content that, in addition to creating a corporate asset, may also contain data that can be regarded as a liability.
UX@AddThis
At AddThis we design products that are used on over 15 million websites, loaded over 1.1 trillion times annually and reaching 1.9 billion people monthly in 70 languages all over the world. As a small company, we’ve had to get creative to scale product design that evolves quickly with customer needs and a rapidly changing technology landscape.
In this session you’ll learn how we’ve taken ideas from agile development, lean UX methodologies, and organizational design strategies to come up with our own flavor of rapid design and product development.
In this talk Jim will touch on team structure, project process, designing for scale, putting data to work, iterating on process design, and tools, tips and tricks for making things work smoothly.

NoVA UX User Testing Workshop July 2015 - Will KingJim Lane
Summary
User testing is something we all know we should do with our products or websites, but we seldom do because of perceptions of expensive time/financial commitments or that it is difficult to do. The reality couldn't be further from the truth! Join us for our testing workshop and learn user testing best practices and get hands on experience testing your own/your company's website, app, product. We encourage you to have a website or app you want to test ready when you arrive. We'll be pairing into small groups and giving everyone chances to moderate and test.
About Will King
Will works as a product manager and user researcher for AddThis and he also co-organizes NoVA UX. He's conducted user research for Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, government agencies, and most proudly, for AddThis. His educational background is in cognitive psychology, so watch out, he might psycho-analyze you if you're not careful ;). Will enjoys watching/reading sci-fi, bushwhacking, and the occasional RPG.
