Composite materials are materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties that remain separate and distinct at the macroscopic or microscopic scale within the finished structure. The design of composite materials requires consideration of factors like the selection and properties of the constituent materials, their orientation, distribution and volume fraction in the composite, as well as the interface between the materials. The goal is to produce a material with properties that are superior to those of the individual components.
