services for civil and electrical engineering
projects. Having completed over 100 prestigious and varied assignments in the last 5
years, DG is a leading consultancy firm, offering full‐fledged consultancy services
across various fields of engineering in India and Abroad.

Equipped to provide design consultancy on very large engineering projects, DG has
been providing technical consultancy services to various organizations and
companies for planning, detailed design, and implementation of Hydel, thermal,
and other power projects. These services include analysis of financial aspects, design
engineering for electrical installation of substations, switchyards and transmission
lines, design engineering for civil engineering structures including large dams,
tunnels , canals, power canals, cross drainage works, surge tanks, penstock , and
power houses. DG also provides services related to other civil engineering fields of
Irrigation, Water Supply, and Waste Water Treatment.

DG, which has an annual turnover of over Rs.400 lakhs, provides consultancy
services required for the implementation of projects, right from concept to
completion, commissioning, operation and maintenance, thereafter. DG’s services
have been utilized by Large Industrial Houses, Firms, and Independent Power
Producers in India, and elsewhere, for the planning and design engineering of their
projects. In year 2004, DG was honored with an ISO 9001:2008 certification for its
design engineering services and continues to hold the certification.

8. EXPERIENCE IN DESIGN ENGINEERING OF A FEW IMPORTANT
PROJECTS

8.1 Balance of Plant of Hail – 2 Power Plant

M/s. Alfanar one of the leading EPC contractors in Kingdom Saudi Arabia was
awarded construction of Balance of Plant of Hail‐2 Gas based Power Plant by Saudi
Electric Company. M/s ILF Abu Dubai, UAE, were the principal consultants, M/s.
DGPCPL was appointed as sub consultants by M/s. ILF for Detail Engineering and
to issue all construction drawings and designs for complete plan except GTG.
Siemens were the GTG equipment suppliers.

This was a fast track project, involving issue of more than 600 drawings in a short
span of 4 months. The project was successfully commissioned on schedule in the
month of July 2011. The assignment included interaction with clients / SEC (Owners)
during approval stage.

The project comprised extension of Hail – 2 Power plant by adding 2 nos 55/70 MW
output Gas Turbine Generator sets to the existing 6 nos Gas Turbine Generators 132
kV GIS and 380 kV AIS. The extension project consisted of –

1. 132 kV, 220MVA Generator Transformer, 13.8kV / 4.16kV 15MVA unit
auxiliary transformers, 10 nos. service transformers, MV & LV Switchgears
and other BOP.
2. Crude oil / Distillate oil fired Gas Turbine Generator units of 55/70MW
output – 2nos.
3. Crude oil treatment and forwarding and distillate oil forwarding system for
new units.
4. Associated piping, cabling & services

GTG Building under Construction

The Engineering services for the project consisted of –

• Civil Engineering involving structural designs, Architectural layouts,
equipment foundations, for GTG Building, FOTP Building & Switchgear
Building, etc,.
• Mechanical Engineering involving plant Layouts, piping, equipment sizing,
fire fighting system, HVAC, etc,.

8. 2   Sea Water Intake for PFBR Plant Systems:

Nuclear Power Corporation Limited, Kalpakkam, awarded Seawater Intake Cooling
Water System under ambitious plan of generating power through Plutonium Fast
Breeder Reactor Project (PFBR) to M/s. Gammon India Limited. The major
components of the scheme were off‐shore intake shaft, on‐shore outlet shaft, and a
submarine tunnel connecting the two structures at about 45m below sea level.  M/s.
Design Group Project Consultants Pvt Limited, were involved in detailed
engineering services for the sub marine tunnel and shafts.  The project is since been
successfully completed.

The total length of the sub marine tunnel is 565m, Horse shoe shaped with 3600 mm
dia finished diameter. The outer diameter varied from 4300mm to 4600mm,
thickness of lining adopted is 350mm in good rock and 500 thick RCC in inadequate
rock cover region, using M‐45 grade cement concrete.   The tunnel passes through
Charnockyte type II rock medium having modulas of elasticity is 0.46 to 3.34 x 106
tons per square meter. The poisons’ ratio adopted ranged between 0.14 to 0.25 in

rock and 0.15 in concrete.  The SBC of soil is 280 tonnes per sq. meter and strength of
insitu rock is 75.60 Mpa.

Submarine Tunnel

  As per report investigation report the dry density of rock is 2.66 to 2.99 gms per
cubic centimeter. The tunnel was driven 45m below the sea level without any
geological surprises.   The tunnel carries 29 cumecs of seawater required for cooling

the PFBR Plant, with a bed gradient of 1 in 96.4.  The density of Sea Water found to
be 1.024 ton per cum.

In addition, inlet shaft (4250 / 5250 mm dia) and outlet shaft (6000 / 7000 mm dia)
were sunk in both ends with 500mm, thick cement concrete lining using M‐45 grade
concrete.

8.3    Varahi Tail Race Mini Hydel Scheme:

River Varahi is an important West flowing river of Karnataka State with large
Hydel power potential. Power development in the Varahi Valley with an installed
capacity of 239 MW consisting of 2 x 4.5 = 9 MW at Mani Dam Power House and 2 x
115= 230 MW at Varahi Underground Power House was completed by Karnataka
Power Corporation Ltd. in the year 1989.  The Varahi Tail Race Mini Hydel scheme
has been planned and engineered by Design Group for M/s. Sandur Power Co. Ltd.
Varahi Tail Race Mini Hydel Scheme utilizes the tailrace discharges of Varahi
Underground Power house and the available level difference between the point of
confluence of tailrace of Under round Power House with Varahi River and the FRL
of Varahi Irrigation Dam proposed downstream, for generation of power. The
proposed scheme comprises of the construction of a diversion weir across Varahi
river just downstream of the confluence of tail race of VUGPH with Varahi River, a
gravity type intake, a 2290m long, 7m dia horse shoe shaped head race tunnel, 22m
Dia simple type surge tank, 7m dia penstock tunnel, 3 Nos. steel penstocks and a
power house with three standard vertical shaft type full Kaplan turbines of 7.5 MW
capacity each under phase I and a tail race joining the Varahi River on its right flank.
Under Phase II, two more units of similar capacity have been added.

The cost of the project inclusive of escalation in costs during construction and
financial charges is placed at Rs. 13,439 lakhs. The project is under advance stage of
completion and is to be commissioned during the year 2005.

8.4 AMR/ SHAMBURI Mini Hydel Scheme

M/s. AMR Power Pvt. Ltd. Implemented the 24 MW (5 x4.8 MW) Mini Hydel
Scheme across river Nethravathi, a major west flowing river in Karnataka. The
design flood at the barrage is 11500 cumecs. The plant is situated 35 km from
Mangalore, a major costal city in west Karnataka. The project has a low head
fluctuating between 3.95 m to 10.8 m. The rated head of the turbines is 7.31m,with a
large flow. The design discharges utilized for power draft is 78.47 cumecs per unit.
The units are capable of running at 15% continuous overload. ‘S’ type Kaplan
turbine coupled to 4800 KW synchronous generator through the gear box are
adopted. During the construction, another developer M/s. Rithwik Energy
Generation proposed a 24 MW capacity power plant on the other bank. After mutual
discussion, it was agreed to utilize the existing facilities of M/s. AMR Power.

Thus, a power house accommodating 10 x 4.8 MW was planned and developed,
with a combined annual generation of 115.14 GWHr. The scheme comprises of, a
barrage across river Nethravathi with 30 radial gates to safely pass the 11500 cumecs
flood, non‐overflow sections, a power block on the left bank, a surface power house,
and a 95.86m x 32m x 2km long tail pool and channel. The water is led back to river.

The power is evacuated to the nearest substation at Netlamanur, 15 km away, at 110
KV rating. The construction took 27 months and the plant was synchronized. DG
provided the design engineering services.

8.5   Modernisation of Shivanasamudram Power Channel.

Visveswaraiah Vidyut Nigam Limited (VVNL), a Public Sector Company, owned by
earstwhile Karnataka Electricity Board, as a part of the Modernisation programme of
the existing Shivanasamudram Hydro Power Project, had proposed to increase the
water carrying capacity of the power channel upto the Shivanasamudram Balancing
Reservoir and also increasing the live capacity of the Shivanasamudram Balancing
Reservoir to cater to the increased needs of the power channel and also the increased
needs of the drinking water supply for Bangalore City.  VVNL entrusted the work of
planning for the improvements and the detailed engineering for the same to
Shivanasamudram Power Project is the earliest of the power projects constructed in
India, way back in the year 1902, to supply electrical power to Kolar Gold Mines
situated 85 kms away.

Divider wall under Construction

Originally a 2000m long power channel connecting Shiva head works and the Shiva
Balancing Reservoir had been constructed with a central earthen divider wall and
side slopes lined with  stone pitching.

The central divider wall was an earthen bund with stone pitching on the side slopes
the overall dimensions of the divider wall has been 3.7m at the top and 8.2m at the
bottom.

Over a period of the last 100 years, the water carrying capacity of the channel had
been reduced to 22.6 cumecs, from the original capacity of 34 cumecs, due to silting,
vegetation growth, etc. In order to increase the discharge carrying capacity of the
channel, the divider wall was replaced by a thin RCC dividing wall; the pitching of
the side slopes was reset and covered with RCC lining. The vegetation growth was
completely removed.  After modernization, discharge carrying capacity of the power
channel has increased to 59.5 cumecs.  The live capacity of Shiva Balancing Reservoir
has been substantially increased by desilting the reservoir and removal of weed
growth. In addition, DG was asked to suggest simple method of desilting of the
Balancing Reservoir.  A simple technique of using a shovel mounted on a raft made
out of a battery of empty steel drums was suggested and used along with ejection of
the silt by a mud pump and a pipe line supported on empty floating drums, and
taken to the shores.

8.6   Link Canal Mini Hydel Scheme:

Karnataka Irrigation Department, as a part of the modernization of K.R. Sagar
project irrigation Canal System, took up the scheme to construct a link canal taking
off from the Visveswaraya canal before Hulikere tunnel and joining the Cauvery
Branch canal near Peehalli at the 17th Mile (27.20 km) in Mandya District.  At the tail
end of this link canal, there is a difference in level of about 8.3m between the bed of
the link canal and the bed of the Cauvery branch canal and is negotiated by the
construction of a drop structure.  Link Canal Mini Hydel Scheme was formulated to
utilize the water flow of the link Canal and the head available at the drop at the end
of Link Canal, for power generation.

utilize the water flow of the link Canal and the head available at the drop at the end
of Link Canal, for power generation.

The scheme is simple with minimum civil engineering works. The civil engineering
components comprise of a 70m long approach channel, intake structure, gated
bypass weir with provision of automatic falling shutters, surface power house, tail
channel leading the water back to the branch canal. The installed capacity of the
scheme is 1500 kW, with one unit of Vertical full Kaplan Turbine and generator. The

average annual energy generation is 10.10 GWHr. The cost of the scheme is Rs. 80
Million. The Project was completed in the year 2003 by the Developers M/s Graphite
India Ltd., Bangalore, The civil engineering works were contracted to M/s Mysore
Construction Co., Bangalore. The Planning and Detailed Design Engineering was
handled by Design Group.

Captive Thermal Station of the GE India Technology Centre at Bangalore, which has
been completed on a time bound schedule of 6 months.

8.8 Windmill Power

M/s. Doddanavar Brothers, who have Plan to develop 100MW Wind Farm in
Chikkodi, Belgaum district of Karnataka, India, availed our technical support for
Engineering of balance of a plant. Critical main equipment of capacity 10 x 1.5 MW
was sourced from M/s. Sinovel, China, while the rest was sourced locally.

Foundation of Wind Mill

DG assisted the developers by drafting technical specifications, preparing data
sheets, floating tender for fabrication of towers, tower internals and electrical
right from 690 volts to the grid connection. In addition, assistance was extended
for procurement activities. The Civil Raft Foundation drawings were provided
after detail designs, for local sub‐surface soil conditions. The entire assignment
was completed in 9 months.

Wind Turbine Generator Hub

1. DG designed 33 kV outdoor yard sub‐station at  Wind farm, 33 kV transmission
line from Wind farm to  pooling 33 / 110 kV sub‐station, 33 / 110 kV outdoor yard
pooling station and 110 kV transmission line from pooling station to KPTCL
evacuating 110 kV sub‐station.
2. DG prepared technical specification for 33 kV substation at Wind farm, 33 kV
transmission line, 33 / 110 kV pooling station and floated enquiry for the
procurement and scrutinized the Vendor offers and finalized the orders on
suppliers.
3. Vendor drawings and specification scrutinized.
4. Assisted in commissioning the sub‐station and transmission line.

The first batch of 10 x 1.5 MW has been commissioned. Under second stage 20 x
1.6 MW GE machines have been selected, the civil foundation is under
construction.

8.9 Design of Vacuum Chambers

M/s. Hind High Vacuum Co. Pvt. Ltd., specializing in manufacture of Pressure
Vessels and Vacuum Chambers for defence, pharmaceuticals, and solar panels,
entrusted to DG, design and preparation of fabrication drawings for a Robotic TIG

Welding chamber of size 7m x 5m x 3m. The M.S. Vacuum Chamber is designed for
negative pressure of 1 kg per sq.cm, with a rider that the defection of internal
structural members must be limited to 0.5 mm.

The chamber consists of a main chamber, a man entry/exit chamber, robot entry/ exit
chambers, tool chambers, etc. The robotic arm moves on rails. The welding will be
carried out under Argon gas atmosphere. The chamber were analysed using NISA
Software package and the analysis has been validated by Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore, the pioneer research institute, by using ETAB software. The analysis,
design, and fabrication drawings have been forwarded to M/s. Hind High Vacuum
Co. Pvt. Ltd. The fabrication of chamber is in advance state of complexion. The
Robotic TIG Welding Chambers, when commissioned, will be one‐of‐its‐kind in the
world.

8.10 Design Group has been successfully providing pre‐tender and post‐tender
services for various public sector undertakings and several private sector
undertakings, in as much as assessment of costs, detailed specifications of various
items of work, conditions of contracts, tender documents, tender analysis and
reports leading to selection of construction and supply agencies as per time bound
schedules and needs of clients.

13. Brief Profile of Advisors / Consultants

Mr. H.V. Eswaraiah, is retired from Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, working as

freelance Consultants for large Hydro Power Project. Design Group is availing his

technical expertise on implementation of Hydro Power Project related to contracts,

QAC, PMC etc.

Mr. H.V. Eswaraiah, after his Masters degree from renowned Indian Institute of Science,

had a brief stints as lecturer, worked in State Public Works Department before joining

Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, as Assistant Executive Engineer in the year 1971,

and retired as Technical Director in the year 1997. He has extensively dealt with all

aspects of Hydro Power Projects, starting from field investigation, preparation of PFR,

DPRs, Bid preparation, technical evaluation, award of work, as Executive Engineer, he

has worked on  a 100m high Supa Concrete gravity Dam, achieved production level of

1000 cumecs per day of concreting production and laying in the design. At corporate

level, in charge of long term Power Project Planning, advising Managing Director, on

settlements of dispute and claims of contracts, direct monitoring of all Projects under

construction, procurement and movement of Coal, Cement and Steel.  In his tenure, he

has handled 15 Hydro Power Projects including a Thermal and Wind Projects.  He had

wide experience in dealing with World Bank Funded Projects.

After his retirements, he was appointed by NTPC for Koll dam (700 MW) as advisor.  He

is also assisting Banks as Lender Engineers for various Mini Hydel Scheme funded by

Banks.

Mr. Shankar V. Nesargi, B.E. (Mech), ME (WR), Joined Karnataka Power Corporation

Limited, as an Engineer in the year 1970 and retired as Managing Director of VVNL,

subsidiary Company of KPCL in the year 2005. As an Assistant Engineer handled

investigation works of Kali Hydro Electric Project ( 6 x 135 MW) including drift works.
Incharge Executive Engineer for construction, O & M of 4 x 210 MW

Raichur Thermal Power Plant, he had extensive explosure to Coal Plant, Railways, WTP,

Boiler, Turbines etc. During this period, he was elevated, as Superintending / Chief

Engineer. In the year 2003, he was appointed as Executive Director totally incharge of
Planning Infrastructure works of 4 x 350 MW, Bidadi Gas Based Power Plant, near

Bangalore. Subsequently, he was appointed, as Managing Director, Vishveswaraiah

Vidyuth Nigama Ltd., incharge of O & M, of 600 MW Hydro Power Project including R

& M works. During his tenure in KPCL, he has attended several National and
International Seminar and travel world wide.

After retirement he was a freelance consultant to various foreign Companies in Uganda,

Spain etc., traveled extensively in these countries as technical consultants.

Presently, he works as a Managing Director of DB Global Energy Limited, a Company
dedicated to Wind Power Generation as IPPs, executing 100 MW of Windfarm near

Belgaum, Karnataka.

Mr. P.R. Balasubramanian, after obtaining Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineer, had

one year training in Nuclear and Allied subjects in Bhabha Automic Research Centre,

Bombay. Thereafter, he was absorbed in the department worked for a decade in various

departments of BARC, before joining Engineers India Limited, New Delhi in the year

1978. Thereafter joined Gas Authority of India Limited and worked till 1990. He was
selected, as Director in Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd, in 1997. He was Chairman /

Managing Director of Fertiliser and chemicals, Travancore up to his retirement in the

year 2002.

He is a freelance consultant, presently independent Director of REC, India Rare Earth

Ltd., (Department of Atomic Energy).

Mr. B.V. Ramakrishnaiah, hydraulic Gates Consultants, was ranked 4th in Bachelor of
Engineer, and passed M.E. in distinction from India’s premier Institution namely Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore, in the year 1964.  He joined CW& PC, New Delhi, soon
after his Master degree in the year 1962, worked mainly in design and drawing of
Hydraulic Gates for Irrigation and Hydro Power Projects.  In the year 1966 joined M/s.
Triveni Structurals Ltd., Naini, Allahabad, served over 13 years in the organization, as
Gates and Penstock design specialist.  During his tenure, he has designed cylinder Gates
for Ramanaganga Project, which is only one of its kind in the country, operated by a 70
tonnes capacity Hydraulic hoist. Another gate operated by 650 tonnes capacity
Hydraulic hoist is designed, as High Pressure slide gates, for Baggi control works,
Sundernagar, Himachan Pradesh, High Pressure fixed wheel Penstock emergency gate
was designed for Beas Project, Punjab for a clear vent size of 10 feet x 21 feet, for a
design head of 110m.  This gate carries a total load of 2160 tonnes which is transferred to
concrete through 12 wheels, 150 tonnes capacity hydraulic hoist  operates the gate.  Crest
radial gates for Itezhitezhi Dam, Zambia, has been designed which was vetted by
SWECC Swedan. Similarly, Batten outlet radial gates had been designed for Great
Reeha Power Project Tanzania.

He resigned M/s. Triveni Structurals Ltd., in the year 1979, to start his own consultancy
firm, where he has designed over 100 gates of various shapes and sizes.  To name a few,
designed 18.288m x 17.145m spillway radial gates for Srisailam Hydro Electric Project in
Andhra Pradesh, first time spherical plain bearings were used for the Tirunion instead
of normal bronze bushes. Designed one of the tallest Penstock gate of size 6.75m x
15.75m in the country, for Lower Metur Project in Mettur Tamilnadu.

As regards Penstocks, Pipes, 2.743m dia for a static head of 405m was designed for
Kaufe Gorge HEP in Tambia Africa, 4.88m dia to withstand static head of 51.2m was
designed for Bowatena Power Project in Sri Lanka. He has distinction of designing
record breaking gate size and penstocks of large diameter in India.  He is ranked as a top
class gate designer in India.

Mr. V. Balachandran, is a retired, Deputy Director General and HOD GSI, Southern

Region. He is a freelance senior Geologist advising Design Group on Engineering

Geology for Large Hydro and Irrigation Projects in India and Abroad. Presently

pursuing his doctoral thesis in Osmania University.

Mr. V. Balachandran, after Masters’ degree in Geology joined Geology Survey of India in

the year 1971, as Junior Geologist and retired, as Deputy Director General and HOD,

GIS, Southern Region. Out of 36 years of experience in the fields of Geology, 30 years is

spent in Engineering Geology, involved in conducting Preliminary Investigation to post

construction stage, his services spread all over India, including Supervision and

guidance to Project Authorities. A few Projects where he was directly involved are :

facilitated smooth negotiation, Chibro Khodri Hydro Power Project tunnel between two

regional thrusts. Facilitated smooth negotiation of twin tunnels of Khan Hydel Scheme,

upto upper Siwalik incoherent sand rock with plethora of problems such as seepage,

collapse and daylighting of the tunnel. Selection of Dam site for 230m high rockfill dam

project which was under investigation for a protracted period (40 years). By identifying

source of seepage at Kadampari Pumped storage scheme, the energy generation was

substantially enhanced. Adopted hydraulic jacking of upper Kodayan tunnel and

suggested other remedial measure. Geological investigation was extensively carried at

MAPS Kalpakkam and Kundankulam for Nuclear Power Corporation Ltd., Extensive

field services were carried out with special reference to Seismological studies led to

clearance for Kundakulam Atomic Power Plant. Initiated studies on Korada Atomic

Power Plant and studies on Plutonium Fast Breeder Reactor Project under Madras

Nuclear Power Plant leading to clearance to the Project. Carried out Mega thrust

Tsunami Hazard studies in South India. Attended several National and International

seminars, and presented several technical papers, Traveller World Wide, including

undergoing training in Harza Engineering, USA and National Resources (Canada) and

Geological Survey of Canada at Vancouver Calgary and Ottawan Canada.

C.R. Venkatesh B.E. (Civil), M.E. (Str), obtained first class with distinction in Masters’

degree, from the renowned Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He worked, as

lecturer in Engineering Colleges, Assistant Residential Officer, CWPRS (Poona, Scientist

Cement Research Institute of India, New Delhi, before joining National Hydro Power

Corporation Ltd., as Manager in the year 1981, worked till his retirement in the year

2004. During his tenure in NHPC Ltd., he has risen from the post of Manager upto

Executive Director. As a Chief Engineer, he was in charge of Dulhasti Hydro Power

Project (3 x 130 MW). As an Executive Director, Contract Division, managed all
procurement activities and Civil E & M Works Contracts. Under R & D wing, he has

evolved cost analysis of complicated works, suggested various means for cost cutting.

He was trained in detailed structural analysis of Chamber Concrete Dam in Canada; in

Sweden, under went Advanced International Hydro Power Develop Project; in
Germany / Netherland attended Advanced Management Development Training.

In India, under went specialized technical training in Reflection Photo elasticity and

strain gauge technique,   Dam Safety, Geotechnical instrumentation etc. He has visited

number of Foreign Countries. Deputed to Pakistan, participated in technical discussions,

on Indus Watering Treatment. Had meeting with Arbitrators in connection with Internal
Arbitration Tribunal on Chamera HEP Contract disputes.  He has 44 technical papers to

his credit.  His research paper on De‐silting basin, won a special Certificate of merit by

Central Board of Irrigation and Power, New Delhi.

Since, his retirement, his services, as freelance consultant is being used by major Civil

Contractors for dispute redressal and Arbitration.

Mr. M.C. Rangarajan, after obtaining Bachelor of Engineer degree from Indian

Institute of Science, in the year 1969, joined Karnataka Power Corporation as

Electrical Engineer, and retired in the year 2005, after 36 years of rich in
experience Hydro Power generation. Important assignment to name as Design

and Layout of Hydro and Thermal Projects sizing of units, firming up of

technical specification, bid documents, bid processing, contract management,

project monitoring, inspection of components, Vendors Plant. He was involved

in construction of following Hydro Projects to name a few, Nagjhani (6 x 135
MW) Supa Dam Power House (2 x 50 MW), Gerusoppa Dam Power House (4 x

60 MW), Kadra Dam Power House (3 x 50 MW), and Kodasalli Dam Power

House (3 x 40 MW). In addition looked after O & M of Sharavathy HEP (1035

MW), Varahi underground Power House (230 MW), R & M works etc.

As a senior executive Chairman of Core group for Q & AC of EPC Contract for

500 MW Bellary Thermal Power Plant, Power Purchase agreement with State

S. Ramanan, B.E. (Civil), worked in Karnataka Power Corporation Limited between 1975

to 1984, after a brief stinct, as lecture in NIE Mysore.  Joined NHPC, in the year 1985, and

retired in the year 2009, as General Manager.

He had an exposure in all branches of Hydro Power Project, from Survey, Investigation,
Preparation of PFRs and DPRs, bid documents, to Civil designs, construction of HEPs.

He was past as GM Consulting and Bussiness Development Division, dealt with Tidal

Power Project, Infrastructure development in Andaman and Nicobar Island, Varzab

Power Plant in Tajikistan and raising of Dhankari dam in Port Blair, Andaman and
Nicobar Island. Till his retirement, he had handled over 5000 MW of Hydro Power

development in various capacities sparing across the length and breadth of India for 10

HEPs in total.  He had a short stint in design and engineering of Power transmission line

in North East State. He is a freelance consultant advising various IPPs in
implementation of small Hydro Projects.

Mr. Umashankar joined MECON Ltd., in the year 1973, as steel structural engineer and

retired in the year 2009, as Deputy General Manager. As a steel structural designer, he

was actively involved in design of Steel Plants of large capacity in India, such as Bokaro

Steel Plant (expansion) Bhilai steel plant (expansion, Titanium – Dioxide pigment plant

in Kerala, Defence Project – NSTL at Vizag A.P., Kudremukh Iron Ore Project, Essar

Steel Plant, at Hazira. Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Plant at Toranagallu, Karnataka, external

Coal handling system for TNEB at Chennai, Birla Copper expansion phase II. HGPL –

Expansion at Vizag A.P. Defence Project – Sea bird at Karwar, West Coasts of Karnataka,

Essar Integrated Steel Plant at Hazira. More than half million tones of Steel design and
fabrication of steel structure has been done under his guidance. He has been deputed to

Mr. V. Narayanan, is a transmission line design and construction expert. Advisor to

Design Group on assignments pertaining to transmission lines, as and when required.

After his Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering, obtained Masters degree in Civil and

Hydraulic Engineering from India foremost Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in the

year 1963.  soon after joined M/s. SAE (India) Ltd., as Design Engineer for transmission

Tower, Civil Foundation and other allied works.  He has involved designs and drawings

for various voltages from 66 kV to 220 kV to many Electricity Boards in India.

Subsequently 1973 onwards assumed the change of Production Manager in M/s. SAE

Factory at Jabalpur. He was deputed to M/s. SAE, Milano, for being trained in their

works at Lecco, on production engineering, design and drawings, Testing Stations. In

the year 1978 was sent to Australia to acquaint with the working of Testing Station.  At

Jabalpur Plant, made a commercially viable Testing Station in par with International

Testing Station.  He was responsible for increasing the production capacity to 30,000 MT

per annum from 8000 MT.  As a General Manager responsible for design and testing of

many 400 kV and 500 kV DC lines.  After his retirement worked in several International
Companies, such as Zamul Steels, Daman, TNB Malaysia, Kulalanpur etc.  He has wide

technical knowledge in Transmission lines from concept to commissioning.

Mr. C.S. Hebli, B.E. (Hons), after obtaining Bachelor degree in Civil Engineer with

distinction, joined Bombay public works Department, in the year 1954, worked as Junior

Engineer Planning Minor Irrigation Project, after reorganization of Karnataka state, his

services were lent to Hydro Electrical Civil Projects in the year 1959, as Assistant
Executive Engineer, involved in investigation and preparation of Bedthi, Aghanashini,

Mahadayi, Kalinadi (910 MW) Projects. HECP was converted into a dedicated power

generation company called Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, fully owned by

Government of Karnataka to execute. He raised from ranks upto first Technical Director

of the Company, retired in the year 1988 with 37 years of rich power project experience.

During his service, activity involved in Kalinadi HEP (910 mw), Sharavathi HEP (835

MW), Varahi HEP (239 MW). Raichur TPS (5 X 210 MW) from concept to completion,

involved in long term planning of Projects, Hydro policy in the state etc. After
retirement worked with Thapar Hydro Council, as consultant dealt with several Hydro

and Gas based Power Plant aggregating to 2000 MW, joined as Chairman, Design

Group Project Consultants Pvt Ltd., Company established in 1979, technically guiding

staff strength of 52 technocrates effectively involved in technical advise. Policy

decisions, Company affairs etc.

Mr. B.L. Lakshminarasimha, B.Sc., B.E., M.E., M.I.E., F.I.V., M.A.S.C.E., after

obtaining Master degree in Civil Engineer from Birla Institute of

Technology, Pilani, premier educational Institution of India

(collaboration with M.I.T., USA,) after a short stint in Messers. Gerame

and Binny Limited, joined Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, as a Civil Engineer in

1975, resigned after 20 years of  service,  acquired technical knowledge in drafting of bid

documents for large Hydro Power Projects, interpretation of Contract Clauses, resolved

disputes, formulated schedule of rates, design of Surface Power House, framed structure

through 3 D modeling etc. Designed and constructed KPCL Corporate office building.

Assisted Company’s legal advisors in Arbitration proceeding/Contract disputes, in the

Court of Law etc Founder member Design Group, established in 1979.  What turned out

to be one man show in 1979 has grown to a large consultancy firm of repute in India and

Abroad. Over 3 decades of existence, developed an exclusive team of dedicated

consultants having 40 years and above experience in Power and Irrigation Projects from

concept to completion.

Recently developed a dedicated team of engineers to extend design engineering services

in Water and Waste Water Treatment Plants. Successfully steered the company in

obtaining KEMA ISO Certification, maintained consistent profitability over the decades.

Executed number of Joint Venture Partnership in India and Abroad, such as CPRI,

WAPCOS, ILF, for implementation of Large Projects successfully, signed a few design

engineering assignment contract in neighbouring countries such as, Saudi Arabia,

Dubai, Muscat, Ghana, Nepal, Sri Lanka.

Mr. P.R. Mallikarjuna, after obtaining M.E., from prestigious Indian

Institute of Science in the year 1969, worked in various capacities in a

Public Sector / Private Companies, before joining Karnataka Power

Corporation in the year 1971, as Group Engineer (AEE), and retired in

the year 2000 as Technical Director, with an illustrious career spanning 34 years in
various cadres. He was one of the Board of Directors of KPC Limited, for over 7 years,

after his retirement. During his tenure in the KPCL, he was the head of Design wing and

handled all major Hydro Projects, Thermal Power Plants from concept to

commissioning. Over 1200 MW of Power Projects has been investigated under his
guidance and about 2000 MW of Power Projects has been designed. Further, 900 MW of

Power Projects have been implemented under his guidance. He has attended several

National and International seminars, and contributed dozens of technical papers. After

his retirement, he was involved in the preparation of revised DPR for 12 X 80 MW Indira
Sagar Polavaram Hydro Electric Project in Andhra Pradesh, on behalf of Andhra

Pradesh Irrigation Department, including obtaining clearances from Central Electricity

Authorities, New Delhi. He was involved in detailed engineering of Nagarjuna Sagar

Tail Pond dam Power House (2 x 25 MW) and Varahi underground Power house – Stage
II (2 x 115 MW).

From 2008 onwards, he heads the Civil Design wing of DGPCPL and is responsible for

planning and design of Hydro Electric Projects and Large Irrigation Projects, etc.

Mr. P.K. Rupangudi, after obtaining M.E., from prestigious University

College of Engineering, Bangalore in the year 1971 worked in State

Government Organisation, before joining Karnataka Power

Corporation in the year 1972 as Engineer and retired in the year 2004

as Chief Engineer with an illustrateous carrier spanning 32 years in

various cadres. During his tenure in the KPCL, he was head of Design wing consisting

of engineers of all discipline, handled all major Hydro, Thermal Power Plants from

concept to completion. Attended several National and International seminars, and

contributed several technical papers. He is member of Gate Committee since 1996,

formed by the Govt. of Karnataka for design, fabrication erection & commissioning of

prestigious Alamatti Dam Gates and hoists. Even to date, he is in the panel for

inspection of Hydromechanical works of the State Govt. Organisations. He was a faculty

member on the continuing education to the Engineers of the State, organized by The
Director, KERS – Mysore. He is the main author of History of Lingamakki & Talalakalale

dams, of Sharavati Hydel Scheme assigned to him by the Karnataka Power Corporation.

After his retirement, he was also involved in detailed engineering of Nagarjuna Sagar

tail pond Dam and Varahi underground Power House – Stage II (2 x 115 MW) and a
major weir for Lower Jurala H.E.P of Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Company.

From 2010 onwards he is associated with DG responsible for implementation of Hydro

Electric and Irrigation Projects.

Mr. Chikkaguddappa (C.G. Appa), joined Design Group Project

Consultants Pvt Ltd., in 2005, as a Director Hydro Power Project

Planning and river basin study. He has travelled neighbouring

countries, to advice IPP’s on Planning of Hydro Power Project.

Mr. Chikkaguddappa (C.G. Appa), joined Karnataka Power Corporation Limited in the

year 1973, as an Engineer, raised to the level and retired in the year 2005, from

Corporation after 38 years of long services.  From the day one, he was involved in river

basin development in the Corporation, identifying and Planning Hydro Power Projects

in entire length and breadth of Karnataka state. Mostly dealt with Investigation of
HEP’s  like Shivana Samudhra seasonal scheme ( 4 x 270 MW), revision of DPR for Bedti

Stage I HEP, from 1984, as a Assistant Executive Engineer, he was involved in field data

collection for Hydrology, surface and sub‐surface details for preparation of DPR for

major HEP’s like MahadayI (318 MW), Cauvery Scheme (270 MW), Tamankal (800
MW), Almati Dam Power House (280 MW),  (Mekedath 1400 MW), Kali stage – III (1200

MW) Bedsti stage II (400 MW), Aghanashini (600 MW), Gundiya High heads scheme

(400) conceived if, as a run of the river scheme, study proposed for Pumped storage

scheme at the existing Sharavathy complex (1000 MW) AND Kali Complex (1200 MW).

He was one of the Authorities in river basin studies in Karnataka.  In addition, identified

and prepared DPR’s for Mini Hydel Scheme of less than 25 MW.

He joined Design Group Project Consultants Pvt Ltd., in the year 2005, responsible for
identifying and preparation of Desk Study Report for over 12,000 MW of Hydro Power

Projects in neighbouring Country Nepal.

Mr. Raghavendra Rao H after obtaining BE degree in Electrical

Engineering from National Institute of Engineering, Mysore in the

yarer 1972 worked in Medium Voltage Switch Gear industry as

development and production Engineer till 1977 before joining

Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd, the premier organization carrying out design,

construction, operation and maintenance of power plants in the state of Karnataka,. He

retired as Superintendent Engineer (Electrical) from KPCL in the year 2006. During his

tenure in KPCL he worked in the areas of design, construction, testing and commissioning

and maintenance of Hydro and Thermal power plants mainly in the areas of Electrical

equipments and systems of power plants and the tenure included working at both power

plants and the corporate design office.

The specialized areas are control and protection and he was a member of Protection

committee of Southern Regional Electricity Board.

After joining DG in 2008 he is in charge of Engineering of Electro Mechanical systems of

Hydro and thermal power plants. He is an accredited energy auditor certified by Bureau of

Energy Efficiency, India.

Mr. M.M. Reddy is expert in substation Layout and Electricals designs

from 33 kV upto 400 kV. His services are being used by Design Group in

substation segment of Electrical Engineering.

Mr. M.M. Reddy after obtaining Bachelors’ degree in Electrical Engineering from

Bangalore University, in the year 1968, worked in various capacities in various

organizations. He has worked in NGEF from 1968 to 1997 for 29 years and taken

voluntary retirement in the year 1997, as Divisional Manager. During his tenure in

NGEF, he was head of Sub‐station group and handled switchyards from 33 kV to 220 kV

from designing to commissioning of sub‐stations on EPC basis. Under his guidance,

about 600 MW outdoor Switchyard from 33 kV to 220 kV have been designed and

commissioned. He has undergone training in high voltage outdoor yard sub‐stations in

AEG – Telefunken, Germany for 6 months.

In May 1997, he joined M/s. Design Group Project consultant Pvt Ltd., and he is

responsible for designing of out door yard substation and transmission lines. He has

designed and commissioned various switchyards and transmission line for Hydro

Power Project, to name a few major Projects:

i) Varahi Tail Race (37 MW – 110 kV ODY)

ii) Narayanpur Project Phase – I and II (18 MW ‐ 66 kV ODY)

iii) Singatallur – Hulligudda (18 MW – 110 kV ODY)

He has designed and commissioned balance of equipment for 15 MW Windmill

Project.

Mr R. Vasudevan is a water utility management specialist with over 40

years of experience in Design Construction & Operation of Water

utility services from the source to the consumer, presently full time

consultant of Design Group.

He is a 1971Batch Graduate in Electrical Engineering from Bangalore University. Joining

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board in the same year, he worked in various

capacities and retired as the Chief Engineer during 2010. He was involved in all the

major Projects of BWSSB which was supplying 135 MLD water to 1.5 Million residents of

Bangalore in 1971, and had become a giant utility by 2010 supplying over 900 MLD
water to over 7 Million residents.

He was associated in Cauvery water supply Scheme stage I to supply 135 MLD water

from River Cauvery, in establishing pipe fabrication and laying activities; Later in the

stage II of another 135 MLD Project he was in charge of Electrical system Design and
Construction; In the III stage which was a larger 270 MLD Project he was in charge of

complete Electrical and Hydro‐Mechanical components of the project from tendering to

completion. In the subsequent Stage IV‐Phase I Project which was with external funding,

He was responsible for total cross‐country steel pipeline of 1950mm Diameter and 90
Kilometers long, and later in the installation of Sewerage pumping stations and the

electrical Design and Construction of Seven Sewage treatment plants. In the last 5 years

of his service he was responsible for Securing ODA loan of INR 34000 Million from JICA

for Stage IV Phase II projects of 500 MLD, selection of project consultants, tendering

selection and award of contracts for all water supply components.

In the course of his service he has participated in various workshops and seminars on

pumps , cavitation, cross‐country pipeline design, water‐hammer studies and control,
water treatment, wastewater treatment and sludge disposal, project management,

international contracts, leakage reduction and distribution improvement, flow

measurement, tariff structuring, urban planning , reuse and conservation, etc.

He led the Technical team which presented ‘Innovative Practices in Revenue

Management’ initiative by BWSSB to the Department of Urban Development and

Secured the First Prize in National Urban Water Awards, 2009, from the Hon’ble

President of India, in August 2009.

Vasudevan has designed pumping systems for several lift irrigation pumping systems,

electrical substations and surge protection to pipeline for the Consultancy Centre of

BWSSB from 1995 to 2007. Many such projects have been commissioned in the last 10

years and are in operation.

He also handled an assignment on ‘alternative methods of infrastructure finance by

Private Sector, Infrastructure Bonds, and developing Public‐Private Partnerships’ in

2009.

He also secured an MBA from ICFAI Dehradun with Finance as optional subject. On

retirement from Service he joined Design Group as Water Supply Consultant in

September 2010.

Mr. U.R. Raghotham after obtaining M.Tech from Mysore University    in

the year 1974 worked as design engineer with the architects M/s Karekar

and Sundaram for one year and joined Karnataka Power Corporation

Ltd., in 1975.

During the service in KPC Ltd., he has worked in the design team for Supa Dam for 5

years and then worked as AEE (Construction) in Supa Dam for 7 years starting from

foundation level of the spillway and power blocks to the completion of the Dam.

Further he was in charge of construction of Ghataprabha Power House. From 1989

onwards he worked in the design office as AEE and EE for the planning and design of
various Hydro Electric projects including Kadra dam and Sharavathi Tailrace Project.

Since 2003, he is working as a consultant and was involved in the design of Nagarjuna
Sagar Tail Pond Dam Project, Gandikota dam project, Lower Jurala project of Andhra

Pradesh, Varahi Underground Power House (2x115MW) and many other projects.   He
was involved in the preparation of DPR for Indira Sagar Polavaram Hydro Electric

Project (960MW) and in obtaining clearance from CWC and CEA.

Mr. G. Penchalaiah, after retirement works as free lance Consultants, for various

investigation agencies in flow monitoring in river regime pre‐construction Investigation

works in large Irrigation Projects.  Design Group is utilizing his services for overseeing,

Fielding investigation works in large Irrigation Projects in India and Abroad.

Mr. G. Penchalaiah after his graduation in Civil Engineering from Sri. Venkateshwara
University in 1970, joined Central Water Commission, as Civil Engineer and retired in

the year 2007, as Director.  He has vast experience in Water Resources Project Planning,

specially large Irrigation Project investigation, Hydrology, Computation of yield,

Development of Irrigation dam and associated Irrigation Networks, preparation of
Detailed Project Report. He was posted to various States in India, was familiar with

available yield in various river for Irrigation utilization to improve the Agricultural

Sector and Water Management. He was deputed to CEA, New Delhi, responsible for

design of structures and cost estimates for Thermal Power Project.   He had made topo
map studies, interlinking river, water balance study, etc.  As a Senior Engineer worked

on Indo‐Nepal Joint Projects, namely Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project, head quarter

at Kathmandu, Nepal. Involved in preparation of DPR, cost estimates, preparation of

Infrastructure Planning for major Power / Multipurpose Projects, such as Poornagiri,
Rupaligad etc.

Mr. Suryanarayana, after his retirement on Deputy General Manager ‐ Geology from

Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, works as freelance Consultant.   He is a part of
Design Group being extensively used his expertise in Engineering Geology in various

assignments undertaken,  on job to job basis.

My. Suryanarayana, after obtaining Masters’ degree in Geological Science, joined

Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, as Junior Geologist and retired in the year 2007,

as Deputy General Manager – Geology.  During his tenure, he was involved in most of

the Hydro Power Project implemented by Karnataka Power Corporation Limited in

Karnataka, to name a few Rammam HEP (120 MW), Rolep HEP (60 MW) and Chakung

Cha HEP (60 MW) all in Sikkim; 80 meter high Chakra Rock‐fill Dam: Varahi HEP (460
MW). Involved in preparation of DPR for Gundiya Hydel Scheme (400 MW),

Shivasamundram Seasonal Scheme (270 MW), Mekedatu Multipurpose Project (360
MW).  He is also involved in ongoing Himagiri HEP (280 MW), Upper Tunga Irrigation

Project involved 4 km of tunneling etc. Apart from this, he has wide experience in
advising developers / IPPs in implementation of Mini Hydel Scheme of 25 MW and

below all over India.

Mr. K.T.Sreedhara, after obtaining B.E (Civil), degree from Vikram

University, Ujjain, in the year 1970. worked as design Engineer in

M/s.P.V.Raj & Co. Consulting Engineers Hyderabad from January 1971

to November 1973. The works dealt in this period are Designs of Bridges

and Industrial Structures and Buildings. Then joined M/s. Karnataka

Power Corporation Ltd., a public sector undertaking of government of Karnataka on

28.11.1973 and worked Up to 31.01.2006 i.e. 32 years and 2 months in various capacities as

AE, AEE, EE, SE &finally retired as I/C Chief Engineer on superannuation from the

Karnataka Power Corporation service. During this tenure in KPCL worked in the civil
designs wing on the design of Gravity dam (concrete), Earthen dams, water conducting

System and in construction wing worked in Precision survey works at Varahi under ground

Mr. Achutha Narayana, after obtaining M.Tech from Prestigious Indian

Institute of Technology in the year 1996 and has since 15 years of

exclusive experience in design of various components of hydroelectric

Projects. He started his career in Design Group Project Consultants Pvt.

Ltd., Bangalore as Design Engineer (Civil) and was involved in Harangi
HEP (2x4.5MW) in Karnataka. He joined NHPC ltd., A Govt. of India Enterprise in year

1998 and was involved in Planning and Construction stage Design of Dhauliganga HEP

(4x70MW), Uttaranchal and Chamera‐III HEP (3x77MW), Himachal Pradesh. He was

associated with the preparation of DPR of Siyom HEP (1000MW), Arunachal Pradesh,
Dhauliganga Intermediate HEP, Uttaranchal, Tender stage Design Activities for Chamera‐III

HEP, Kishanganga HEP (3x110MW), J&K and Chutak HEP (4x11MW), Kargil, J&K He was

also involved in Pre‐feasibility reports of 7 projects in Arunachal Pradesh under “Prime

Minister 50000MW Initiative” totaling to 2581 MW. He was also associated with the
consultancy project of Katra – Laole KRCL Stretch of Prestigious Jammu‐Kashmir Rail Link

Mr. T.S. Srinivasa, after obtaining M.E., from one of the noted Institution

PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu in the year 1987 and

B.E. from National Institute of Engineering College, Mysore, Karnataka

in the year 1984, worked in various capacities in a Public Sector/Private

companies. He has worked In Public sector Karnataka Urban Water

Supply & Drainage Board (KUWS&DB) from 1986 to 2006 for 21 years. He took voluntary

retirement from KUWS&DB and worked in private organizations such as M/s Secon as

Manager and Ms/ Jurong Infrastructure Ltd., as Principal Engineer (Infrastructure).

He was head of Design Wing while working with KUWS&DB, was involved in preparation
of many DPRs comprising of Planning, Design, Estimating, implementation of number of

water supply and sewerage schemes  including Water treatment plants(WTPs) and Sewage

Treatment Plants(STPs)in urban areas of Karnataka State. He was involved with water

supply & sewerage schemes’ proposals to second major city in the state viz., Hubli‐Dharwar

city under World Bank Project. He was also involved with National River Conservation

Projects for prevention of river pollution in the state.

While working with M/s. Secon, he was involved with water supply and sewerage projects

in different towns of Libya country. While working with M/s. Jurong Infrastructure Ltd., he
was involved with Design and implementation of Infrastructure facilities such as roads,

water supply, sewerage, storm water drainage, Electrical & Communication facilities to a

number of town ship development projects including some of the SEZs.

From 2009 onwards he heads the Water Division of DGPCL responsible for implementing

water supply and sewerage projects. Presently he is involved with detail Civil Engineering

Design  of Rafha gas based Power Plant Project in Saudi Arabia.

Mr. P Sudarshan Rao, after obtaining B.E. (E&E) from Malnad College of

Engineering, Hassan (Mysore University) in 1987 worked in the same college

and Regional College of Education, Mysore as a Lecturer for a brief period

before joining KPCL in 1989.

He has more than 22 years of experience, as Assistant Executive Engineer in Karnataka Power

Corporation Limited, a State owned Public Sector Undertaking with dedication for Power

Generation to the State with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification. He has experience in

Operation, Maintenance and Design wings of 210/250 MW coal based Thermal Power Plant.

He also has experience across domains like Inventory Management, Tendering, Tender

Evaluation, Study of various Control System drawings, Planning of Preventive and

Breakdown Maintenance of 210 MW Generator & Auxiliaries, Erection & Commissioning of

Power Transformers of capacities from 50MVA to 315 MVA, 6.6 kV & 415V Indoor Switchgear,

220kV & 400kV Outdoor Switchyard, and Station Battery System. He was also involved in

preparation of cable schedules, interconnection schedules and commissioning of 210 MW &

250MW coal fired thermal Units.

After joining DG in February 2011, he is the group lead of Electrical Design team carrying out

detail Engineering for gas based generating plants and hydro electric plants.
