An Overview Of Driver Seat Comfort: Objective and Subjective Measures and Its...CSCJournals
The purpose of this work is to investigate driver seat comfort and discuss some of the subjective and objective factors that impact it. Comfort describes the nature of the interaction between a human being and a specific environment and is characterized as a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction or discontent and pain. Driver seat design for comfort is complex and challenging because it is somewhat subjective in nature (e.g. mood, culture & car brand). However, there are certain aspects of a seat comfort, which are objective (e.g. anthropometrics, pressure distribution on seat) and can be modeled mathematically. This paper discuses some of the objective and subjective measures which influence seat comfort. In addition, it provides a mathematical model of seat comfort index based on neural networks in terms of some of the objective measures, which influence it. The results of this work show that the objective measures included lead to a correlation of 0.794 to the overall comfort index identified by twelve drivers testing five different types of seats. This implies that our selected objective measures/inputs can capture about 80% of the comfort index identified by test drivers. The remaining 20% variation in comfort index not captured by the model utilized in this work can be attributed to subjective measures and/or additional objective measures which can be added as inputs to the neural network.
A comparison of this study to a previously published work [1] which also utilizes neural networks to model seat comfort index reveals important facts. This previous study uses a very large neural network with a significant number of adjustable parameters to model seat comfort. As a result, their neural network is very prone to memorizing the data associated with seat comfort index without capturing the underlying mathematical behavior. The neural network proposed in this work, however, has an optimal architecture, which captures the mathematical model describing comfort index accurately, and is not prone to memorizing the seat comfort data.

This work solves the problems of human discomfort procured from riding the motorcycle. Also comprises the task of ergonomic considerations in motorcycle seat design using anthropometric data of riders.

2. Introduction
Seating comfort is a major concern for drivers and other members of the work
force who are exposed to extended periods of sitting and its associated side
effects.
Research literature has shown that some of the main factors that affect seating
comfort are seat interface pressure distribution, whole-body vibration and
pressure change rate.
The different requirements of commercial trucks and personal automobiles have
led to separate directions in seat design.
This paper describes the research and development for vehicle seats based on
literature review of journals, technical reports and thesis.
3. Problem Identification
According to Occupational Outlook Handbook by United State Department of
Labor, the truck drivers frequently work 50 or more hours a week.
Assuming four weeks vacation and one more for holidays, which is about 2350
hours driving time per year.
Automotive seats, which are in contact with vehicle occupants, play an important
role in improving the comfort and work environment of a driver and passengers.
The improvement of automotive seating systems, particularly for the driver, has
been the subject of intense interest for many years since a driver feels more
fatigue than passengers.

6. Ergonomic Approach
Driver posture is one of the most important issues to be considered in the vehicle
design process regarding not only the car and the user but also the experimental
conditions.
Alem and Strawn:- An energy absorbing truck seat

In future studies, research should be concentrated on knowledge improvement of
the exposure–response relationship between whole-body vibration and the
occurrence of low back disorder.
7. Summary
From this literature review, it can be seen that the majority of vehicle seats studies
are concentrating on vibration, pressure and ergonomics.
Besides, these topics, driver “fatigue” also needs to be considered in vehicle seat
design.
Fatigue may lead to decreased attention, perception, decision-making, vigilance,
and reaction time.
Future research on seat thermal and humidity comfort can be concentrated on
intelligent thermal and humidity control system and evaluate the physiological
seat comfort for drivers by using on-the-road experiment testing.
