- 2. INTRODUCTION Miles of gigantichorizon, sand mounds, scorching heat, nomadic life and that too with a camel safari, this is what deserts of Rajasthan look like. Deserts of rajasthan are mainly spread over Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur. Their eloquent history and never changing dynamics have surely a catch of eye among sightseers around the globe. World famous Thar Desert is spread over huge area of more than 446000 sq kms and being the 9th largest tropical desert in the world, it is one of the most sought after tourist place in India.
- 3. • Thar Desertor the Great Indian Desert encompasses about 70% of total landmass of Rajasthan and hence it is identified as the "Desert State of India". The Thar Desert embraces the districts of Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur. • Rajasthan Desert comprises the three cities - Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur which is commonly known as the desert triangle. • The Rajasthan desert is predominantly characterized by three landforms- sand dunes, plains and hills

- 6. • Vegetation inthe desert region is limited to very slow growing stunted trees, thorny shrubs and some grasses. The other natural vegetation type in Rajasthan is ephemeral, occurring only during the monsoon season. • kejri (prosopis cineraria) is the most prolific and an all purpose tree of the desert arid zone and its bean shaped fruit, sangri, is eaten as vegetable and used as fodder. The ker fruit is also eaten as vegetable and it has strong and durable wood. • The faunal wealth of the Rajasthan presents a vivid spectrum ranging from mammals and reptiles to bird life. Antelopes and gazelles are found in most of the regions of Rajasthan. Black buck (kala hiran) promintently inhabit the Jodhpur region and the small herds of Indian gazelle (chinkara) are found in the sandy deserts FLORA AND FAUNA

PEOPLE • The IndianDesert is mainly inhabited by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. • A colourful culture rich in tradition prevails in the desert. • The people have a great passion music and poetry. • The main occupation of the people in desert is agriculture and animal husbandry . The living standard of the people in the desert is low.

Bikaner By Air : Though Bikaner does not have its own airport, the closest airport will be the Jodhpur Airport, which is 251 kms away from the city. By Bus : Bikaner is well-connected with plenty of bus services. By Train : Bikaner has two railheads- Bikaner Junction and Lalgarh Railway Station.
