In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in
full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a
guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let
us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is
faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward
love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are
in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more
as you see the Day approaching.

3. Moses to the Conquest

11. The Judges era of faith
1. Gideon
2. Barak
3. Samson
4. Jephthah
5. David
6. Samuel
7. The prophets
12. The main point: in two sections of commentary
All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not
receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a
distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.
People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their
own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have
had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country, a
heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he
has prepared a city for them (11:13-16).
13. The main point: in two sections of commentary
These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what
had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only
together with us would they be made perfect (11:39-40).

15. The coming kingdom
1. A future inheritance (11:8),
2. The city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God (11:10),
3. A country of their own (11:14),
4. A better country, a heavenly one (11:16),
5. Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem (12:22),
6. A kingdom that cannot be shaken (12:28).
16. Kingdom faith
“Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”
1. The future vision: what we hope for … what we do not see - the city, the
kingdom.
2. The kingdom breaks in from the future to the present, in Jesus and by
the Spirit.
3. Faith makes that future real, gives it substance, or certainty, in down-
payment, or deposit.
4. Once you have this faith, you can persevere through adversary, suffering,
persecution, and even death!
