The Two Series #1 - 2 February 2020 - Bruce McCallum

  1. 1. Matthew 7:24-28 (NIV) "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." 28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching
  2. 2. Matthew 7:24-28 (MSG) "These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. 25 Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit - but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.26 But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don't work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach.27 When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards."28 When Jesus concluded His address, the crowd burst into applause. They had never heard teaching like this.

  5. 5. There is a disciples difference between HEARING AND ‘PUTTING INTO PRACTICE’.
  6. 6. CONTEXT 3 parables about making decisions Which gate will you enter - the broad or the narrow? Whom will you follow - the true or the false prophet? What will be the base of your life - rock or the sand?
  7. 7. Similarities
  8. 8. 1. Focus on your Foundations 1 Corinthians 3:9 (NIV) For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. 1 Peter 2:5 (NIV) …you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
  9. 9. 2. We all experience storms Matthew 7:25 (NIV) The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. Matthew 7:27 (NIV) The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
  10. 10. John 16:33 (NIV) "I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
  11. 11. 3. It’s a clear choice
