Live Surgery Instruments
Basic set -> Incision -> Flap retractor -> Suture
Dental Mirror
Functions:
-to provide indirect vision
-to retract lips, cheeks, and tongue
-to reflect light into the mouth
Mouth mirrors must be cleaned, bagged individually or bagged/wrapped in
a tray setup, and then sterilized. A chemical/steam indicator device should
be included in the wrapping.
Anesthetic Syringe
Functions:
-administer local anesthetic
Threaded tip
Piston rod
harpoon
Barrel of syringe
Finger grip
Finger bar
Thumb ring
*Syringes with harpoons are considered aspirating syringes
Periodontal Probe
Function:
-to measure periodontal pocket depth in millimeter increments
Variety of shapes & sizes:
-Orban
-Pigtail
-Shepherd’s hook
Characteristics:
-pointed tips; sharp, thin, flexible
-single or double-ended
Suction tip (aka aspirator tips)
-designed for rapid removal of bulk
matter (i.e.: vomitus, mucus, debris)
from natural or surgical cavities
-good for removal of blood from
extraction sites to keep visibility clear
Bone Rongeur
-muti-jointed, springloaded, plier-like
instrument used to break off pieces of
bone
-opposing surfaces of blades have sharp-
edged, scooped out surfaces like a curette
Needle Holder (gold)
-surgical forceps used to hold and pass
suturing needle through tissue
-aka “suture forceps”
Scissor
-designed to cut tissue/prosthetic material
during dental procedures
-two metallic blades with sharp edges that
slide past each other (shearing action)
Tissue Forcep
-forceps with serrated blades
-with or without teeth
-designed for handling tissues with
minimal trauma during surgery
Blade Holder (straight, round)
-device designed to hold surgical knives during
operative procedures
-most holders disposable devices, discarded with the
knives after the procedure finished
Mosquito (curved)
-small, straight or curved hemostatic forceps used
to hold delicate tissue or compress a bleeding
tissue
-also used to retract in small fields & hold delicate
tissue
Kelly (curved)
-conventional, small hemostats with
ratcheted handles & straight or curved
blades with fine grooves running crossways
inside the tip
Prichard
-larger, heavier curette for removal of
granulation tissue & tenacious subgingival
deposits
Seldin
-has flat handle with small blade at each end
-blades angled & shaped to give easy access to all
locations in mouth
-all edges slightly rounded to avoid needless
injuries to tissues
-larger than periosteal elevator
Mallet
-heavy-headed surgical instrument used for
driving a bone chisel
Bone Curette
-surgical instrument shaped like a scoop or a
spoon
-used to remove tissue or growths from a body
cavity
Periosteal Elevator (molt No. 9)
Molt No. 9
-thin blade used to lift periosteum from bone
-also useful for placing gauze inside mouth
when surgeon isolating particular area for
surgery
Minnesota Retractor
-wide, bent, tongue blade-like instrument
-used to hold cheeks & lips out of the way of
operation field
Pincette
-small pair of pincers, tweezers,
or forceps used in surgery
Blade Holder (straight)
Ochsenbein Chisel
-small, delicate bone removal chisel
-ideal for atraumatic removal of bone adjacent
to teeth during crown lengthening
-used to remove interproximal bone
-fine end also useful in elevating fractured
root tips
Metal Bowl (large size)
-used to hold used instruments after use during surgery
Metal Bowl (small size)
-used to hold small surgical instruments and pieces after use during surgery
Instrument Sheet
-dental bibs can be used as setting sheets
-setting trays can be used on top of sheets if desired
