Demons in the Gospel of Mark
In the Gospel of Mark Jesus encounters the enemy more
times then the other Gospels. This is my journaling on those
                                                     events.

Chapter 1:12-13

At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the
desert for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the
wild animals, and angels attended him (NIV).

We can gather that at times we can be led into “valleys” or
    “deserts” in our lives.

Chapter 1:23-28

Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an
evil spirit cried out, “What do you want from us Jesus of
Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are-
the Holy One of God!”

“Be quiet!” sad Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” The evil
spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a
shriek.

The people were all so amazed that they asked each other,
“What is this? A new teaching-and with authority! He even
gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him.” News about him
spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee

about Jesus as people will be amazed

Chapter 1:32-34
That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-

various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons
speak because they knew who he was.

Often when we encounter the demonic they will try and waste our time by their
tactics. In some cases it is better to just silence them.

however keep in mind that many demons will lie no matter how much
we put pressure on them to speak the truth. Often it is a good idea to
ask them repeatedly, “Have you spoken the truth in the presence of

Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, You are

There have been times when as I have become free from the demonic (and even
before I became aware of it) that people filled with the Holy Spirit.

This can create stirs of great discomfort where I wanted to flee but at the

God and my desire to grow towards God.

It is quite possible that the demon residing in a person knows of their
(a possible) doom when their “host” gets near the right person.
Chapter 3:13-15
Chapter 3:13-15

Jesus went up on a mountainside and
called to him those he wanted, and they
came to him. He appointed twelve-
designating them apostles-that they might
be with him and that he might send them
out to preach and to have authority to
drive out demons
Chapter 3:13-15

When we become disciples of Jesus we
gain this same authority. We can and
should take the authority that Christ has
given us to exile these demons.

Only give them two exits: the abyss to

Chapter 5:1-17

They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an
impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him
anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart
and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and
in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your
name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” And he begged Jesus again and again not to
send them out of the area.

A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs;
allow us to go into them.” He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs.
The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see
what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of
demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the
people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people
began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
Chapter 5:1-17
Jesus encounter a man with many demons and all of them know who Jesus is.

Some demons have power and no man or woman can subdue the person they
     inhabit.

Some demons even cause harm to the person they are within

However they will fall apart when they come near someone with the Holy
Spirit who has the authority of Jesus.

This said often times the power of Jesus we carry can scare and even
cause people to ask us to go away from them. This is due to a lack of
understanding of God on the people’s part because they have been blinded
          by the enemy.

So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill

When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to

Often people who are demonized may be drawn to those who
speak of things of God and Jesus. However, they may have a
conflict within them where they want to hear God, but they
become puzzled due to the blinding of the enemy

Chapter 8:32-33

He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and
began to rebuke him. But Jesus turned and looked at his

Chapter 9:17-29

A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son,
who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.
Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at
the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your
disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”
“You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I
stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy
to me.”
So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately
threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled
around, foaming at the mouth.

Remember that your church or group of believers you associate yourself with may not be the only
church casting out demons and teaching in the name of Jesus. We must respect those who are carrying

Additionally, many missionaries that preach in tribal areas they have reported that these people often
have the history of casting demons. Some of these people claim something to the effect of “the most
high God.” Often they may have tapped into God and we should use these times to teach them about
this God they are referring to.

The only thing I believe we should even speak to demons about could includethe following:

Often it is a good idea to ask them repeatedly, “Have you spoken the truth in the presence of God the Father?” and to command them to look a the throne the cross, the blood of Jesus.

It is quite possible that the demon residing in a person knows of their (a possible) doom when their “host” gets near the right person.

Chapter 5:1-17 They wentacross the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

Chapter 5:1-17 Jesus encountera man with many demons and all of them know who Jesus is. Some demons have power and no man or woman can subdue the person they inhabit. Some demons even cause harm to the person they are within However they will fall apart when they come near someone with the Holy Spirit who has the authority of Jesus. This said often times the power of Jesus we carry can scare and even cause people to ask us to go away from them. This is due to a lack of understanding of God on the people’s part because they have been blinded by the enemy.

For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him

However, they may have a conflict within them where they want to hear God, but they become puzzled due to the blinding of the enemy

My friends used this passage and prayed and fasted to weaken the hold on the demons.

Additionally, many missionaries that preach in tribal areas they have reported that these people often have the history of casting demons. Some of these people claim something to the effect of “the most high God.” Often they may have tapped into God and we should use these times to teach them about this God they are referring to.
