considering the present state of tourism in the country,
especially in Delhi ..

• Around 34.4 percent(1.99 million) of all the foreign tourists
visiting India kick off their tours by landing in Delhi .

Statistics
So Delhi hosts more tourists than any other state/city in
India every year.
But the FTAs (Foreign Tourist Arrivals) in the country as
well as capital has declined over the last couple of years.

4. REASONS ….
• Cases of offenses against tourists, like pick-pocketing, bag
snatching, passport thefts, taxi scams etc. have increased
manifold.
• Kochi, a famous tourist hotspot, turns out to be the city with
the highest crime rate(1636 incidents of crime per 1 lac
residents) with foreigners being the victims of a large
number of the crimes committed.

amendments to the Travel Summary (explosions in
Hyderabad, 21 February). The overall level of the advice
has not changed. We advise against all travel to specific
regions of India and against all but essential travel to other
specific regions of India.”

This is a statement issued by the tourism department of UK,
a country from where 0.76 million tourists arrive in India
annually.

6. SURVEY :
So to get an idea of what the actual situation presently is ,
we surveyed a group of 30 people including 12 localites, 12
persons from other states staying in Delhi and 6 foreign
nationals ..

• Is availability of transportation a problem ?
• What are the aspects you are most concerned about while
touring ?
• Where did u get the info about the tourist places from ?

Tourists are most concerned about:
Transportation for localites and non-delhites.
Security for Foreign nationals,
Accommodation for non-delhites.
Tourist agencies are a major source of information. Not
many seem to utilise services provided by Delhi tourism.

9. DELHI’S ONLINE TOURISM
PORTAL
• ‘http://www.delhitourism.gov.in’ is the Delhi government’s
official online portal for tourism .
• Content available on the website :
1. Details of tour packages available.
2. Contact numbers of transport/ tourism authorities .
3. Online booking facility for registration of the tour
packages.
4. Specific information like Best time to visit a
place, Favourable climate etc. given .

5. List of Restaurants near the Tourist Places.
Flaws :
1. Though there are feedback forms available, yet no provision for user
reviews is provided.
2. Issues with the user-friendliness of the website. Search for
information regarding the tour packages, fares, routes etc. either
ends up in a long pdf file or an Excel sheet !
3. No mention/measures whatsoever about the security of the
tourists,which is the most bugging issue for travellers presently.

TRANSPORT :

14. SUGGESTIONS
There is a lot of content, some of which is useless. There is a feedback
mechanism which is inefficient. The website needs to evolve into an
interactive one to be more effective.
The Delhi tourism online portal should have a review system.

 Public infrastructure

15. SMART TOUR COMPANION
• Issue GPS enabled devices to tourists entering Delhi.
• STCs contain essential information to identify the tourist.
• Government keeps a secure record of all STCs issued for statistical
analysis.
• STC keeps track of all places visited.
• This information can be used to prioritise services at most visited places.
• During emergency, a tourist can give STC ID to speed up locating.

16. SMART TOUR COMPANION
• STC allows a tourist to speak the destination and provides navigation
instructions
• STC provides location-specific information. It can answer queries like
• What is the nearest Ho Ho Bus stop?
• What is the nearest Metro station?
• What is the nearest place of interest?
• STC can be used to pay for public transport, accommodation, entry to tourist
sites, etc. and is protected by a Personal Identification Number (PIN)
• STC has a built-in multi lingual audio guide that can play the relevant
information about the place the tourist is in.

17. SMART TOUR COMPANION
• When the STC detects a impulse, such as in the case of accidents, and if
the tourist does not respond in a minute, it automatically sends a SOS
(Distress call) to Emergency services.
• STC also has a panic button which can be used to start an voice call to
nearest police station as-and-when needed or if the automatic detection
fails.

18. SUGGESTIONS
• Insurance for Indians touring abroad :
The citizens of India travelling abroad may be provided
with an insurance before starting out on their journey to
ensure that all the emergency medical expenditures will be re
funded.
• Online links for Insurance companies must be provided on
the existing tourism websites.
• Similar system is already existing and successfully being
implemented in France and some other European countries.
