This document discusses children's exposure to violence and the Defending Childhood Initiative. It defines different types of violence children may be exposed to directly or indirectly. The initiative aims to prevent exposure to violence, mitigate negative impacts, and increase awareness. Research shows exposure can negatively impact children's development and increase risks of issues like aggression. A Justice Department survey found over 60% of children reported some violence exposure in the past year, including direct and indirect victimization. The vision is a community where children are not exposed to violence at home, school or in their neighborhoods.

Battering:
A pattern of coercive control founded on and supported by physical and/or sexual violence or threat of violence of an intimate partner.
Neglect:
Physical neglect of a child includes refusal of or delay in seeking health care, abandonment, expulsion from
the home or refusal to allow a runaway to return home, and inadequate supervision.
Emotional neglect refers to a chronic failure by the parent or caretaker to provide the child with the hope, love, and support necessary for the development of a sound, healthy personality.

The occurrence of sexual contacts or interaction between, or sexual exploitation of, close relatives, or between participants who are related to each other by a kinship bond that is regarded as a prohibition to sexual relations (e.g., caretakers, stepparents, stepsiblings) (Sadock & Sadock, 2007).

The expression of power and dominance by means of sexual violence, most commonly by men over women, although men may also be rape victims.

Definition:
“Domestic violence homicides occur when a person murders their current or former intimate partner and/or their children. A domestic violence homicide includes the murder of third parties. Examples include the murder of relatives of the person’s former or current intimate partner, someone attempting to protect their current or former intimate partner, or the current intimate partner of the person’s ex-partner. Domestic violence homicides include acts of self-defense against an abusive partner (NCCADV, 2015).”

What causes escalation?
When law enforcement or equivalent officials fail to respond adequately, the victim(s) is/are left in greater danger than before they called out for help. The perpetrator(s) is/are emboldened while the victim feels exposed and weakened. Therefore, the violence escalates.
