2. Types of Family Abuse
 Child Abuse
 Physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect.
 Intimate partner abuse
 Physical abuse, emotional abuse and sexual assault
 Elder abuse
 Physical abuse, emotional abuse, financial and neglect.

3. Child abuse
 one third of physical and sexual abuse is committed by
family members with parents committing more than half
(RCMP 2012)
 32% of the adult population in Canada has experienced
child abuse. (CBC News 2014)
 More than one third of Canadians have been through at
least on or multiple of types of abuse in their childhood.

 Children that were abused in their childhood have a higher
chance to abuse their own children. (Kids Health 2014)
 About 1 million reported cases each year in just the USA.

4. Child abuse – physical
 Is the act of biting,
hitting, chocking,
shaking and pulling
hair.
 Men are more likely to
have experienced
physical abuse.

5. Child abuse – Emotional
 Includes name calling,
public humiliation,
putting down in front of
others, ignoring and
threatening.
 Difficult to detect due to
the lack of physical
evidence.

6. Child abuse – Sexual
 Act of committing sexual acts as a means of pleasure.
Includes genital touching, intercourse, forcing a
child to watch others having intercourse or porn and
taking inappropriate photographs.
 Women are more likely to have experienced sexual
abuse.

7. Child abuse – Neglect
 Includes failing to provide the child with basic needs
and ignoring the child.
 Most common type of abuse that children
experience.

8. Impact of child abuse
 Child abuse can be related to the conflict theory. The theory
states social change is inevitable, child abuse passes
through many generations.
 Child abuse can lead to depression, alcohol abuse, low self-
esteem, aggressive behavior, suicidal, sexual difficulties and
personality disorders.

9. Intimate partner abuse
 67% of Canadians know a women that have
experienced physical or sexual abuse. (Canadian
Women)
 66% are under the age of 24.(Canadian Women)
 Every 6 days a women is killed by her intimate
partner. (canadian women)
 Less than 10% of sexual abuse are
reported.(Canadian women)
 Aboriginal people are more likely than other
Canadians to report being abused by a spouse.

10. Intimate partner abuse - Physical
 Threatening, being
pushed or shoved,
slapping, hitting with
objects.
 80% of victims are
women.(understanding
social problems pg.154)

11. Intimate partner abuse - Emotional
 Intimidating , threatening and verbally degrading.
 Emotional abused victims experience a loss of self-
esteem and feel ashamed, depresses or hopeless.

12. Intimate partner abuse - Sexual assault
 Sexual acts against the will of the victim.
 Crime punishable by Canadian Law. Depending on
the severity of the abuse the culprit may receive a
sentence between 4 years to lifetime.

13. Impact of intimate partner abuse
 Intimate partner abuse falls under the conflict
theory. Victims or witnesses of intimate partner
abuse are more likely to abuse their partner.
 24 % of women suffer from posttraumatic stress
disorder(PTSD) (National institution of justice 2007)
 Can lead to depression and anxiety.

14. Elder abuse
 1 in 5 Canadians believe they know a senior who is
experiencing abuse.
 Often occurs because of abuser’s control and power
over the elder.
 Most common offence committed against an older
adult by a family member is common assault(54%)
followed by uttering threats(22%) (understanding
social problems pg 165)

 Physical – unexplained bruises,
burns and other injuries.
 Emotional – feeling
helplessness, social distancing,
depression, fear and verbal
abuse.
 Financial – not having enough
money for necessities and
signing legal documents that
they do not understand.
 Neglect – isolation, lack of
supervision, abandonment and
failure to provide basic health
and hygiene needs.

16. Solution – Report, report, report!
 All forms of abuse live in a vicious cycle. The only
viable action we can take as bystanders is to report
suspicions of abuse to the authorities.
