Apache Kafak

Native out-of-memory errors happen when a Java application runs out of memory, not in the Java object heap but outside it. The cause may be memory use for native libraries, class loading, multithreading, working data for the Java VM, backing storage for Java objects, or other reasons. No single tool can give you all the answers, and we need to cross-reference information from multiple sources to isolate a problem. Operating system tools, Java dumps, logs, and debuggers all provide useful perspectives, and your challenge is to line them up to see the whole picture. This session works through the tools and data available on the main server platforms to give you a repeatable framework for native out-of-memory error debug.

Troubleshooting Kafka's socket server: from incident to resolutionJoel Koshy
LinkedIn’s Kafka deployment is nearing 1300 brokers that move close to 1.3 trillion messages a day. While operating Kafka smoothly even at this scale is testament to both Kafka’s scalability and the operational expertise of LinkedIn SREs we occasionally run into some very interesting bugs at this scale. In this talk I will dive into a production issue that we recently encountered as an example of how even a subtle bug can suddenly manifest at scale and cause a near meltdown of the cluster. We will go over how we detected and responded to the situation, investigated it after the fact and summarize some lessons learned and best-practices from this incident.

Topics include:
- What latencies and throughputs you should expect from Kafka
- How to select hardware and size components
- What you should be monitoring
- Design patterns and antipatterns for client applications
- How to go about diagnosing performance bottlenecks
- Which configurations to examine and which ones to avoid

Handle a higher rate of Microsoft SQL Server transactions with Google Cloud C...Principled Technologies
Compared to N2 high CPU instances with previous-gen processors, these instances delivered a higher SQL Server transaction rate
Conclusion
Cloud products are plentiful, and it can be easy for organizations to leave performance on the table by simply continuing to add more of the instances they are already using as their customer base or their demands grow. Taking this approach can needlessly waste an IT budget—but by choosing C3 high CPU instances with 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, organizations can get significantly more performance per instance (compared to previous-gen instances), which could ultimately lead to savings. In our tests, where both instance types used Google Cloud Hyperdisk Extreme storage and were configured similarly, Google Cloud C3 high CPU instances with 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors delivered 1.35x the NOPM. If your organization seeks to maximize SQL Server performance per instance, selecting Google Cloud C3 high CPU instances with the latest processor technology could help you achieve those goals.

11. Resource Utilization
For given performance, how efficiently are
resources being used
Something at 100% utilization can’t
accept any more work
Low utilization can indicate more resource
is being purchased than needed
12. Example: Web Application
MediaWiki installed on Apache with 140 pages of content
Load increased in intervals over time
17. “Launching new instances and running tests
in parallel is easy…[when choosing an

30. What’s new in C4: P-state and C-state control
Intel Turbo Boost up to 3.5Ghz
By entering deeper idle states, non-idle cores can achieve up to 300MHz
higher clock frequencies
But… deeper idle states require more time to exit, may not be appropriate
for latency-sensitive workloads
31. Tip: P-state control for AVX2
If an application makes heavy use of AVX2 on all cores, the processor
may attempt to draw more power than it should
Processor will transparently reduce frequency
Frequent changes of CPU frequency can slow an application
32. Review: T2 Instances
Lowest cost EC2 instance at $0.0065 per hour

37. NUMA
Non-uniform memory access
Each processor in a multi-CPU system has local memory that is
accessible through a fast interconnect
Each processor can also access memory from other CPUs, but local
memory access is a lot faster than remote memory
Performance is related to the number of CPU sockets and how they
are connected - Intel QuickPath Interconnect (QPI)
40. Tip: Kernel Support for NUMA Balancing
An application will perform best when the threads of its processes are
accessing memory on the same NUMA node.
NUMA balancing moves tasks closer to the memory they are accessing.
This is all done automatically by the Linux kernel when automatic NUMA
balancing is active: version 3.8+ of the Linux kernel.
Windows support for NUMA first appeared in the Enterprise and Data
Center SKUs of Windows Server 2003.
